A few realities of cruising: Inflatable paddle boards will leak. Sand from the beautiful beaches gets tracked everywhere. The salty air will corrode all your metal stuff. The sun will burn and wrinkle your skin. The weather will often keep you stuck on the boat. Speaking of being stuck on the boat - this is usually the case when a cold front is rolling through. You stock on supplies, find shelter, and then pretty much bunker down for anywhere from a couple days to a week. Yep, not all that much fun but it's one of the many not-so-glamorous realities of the cruising life. We anchor the boat at Royal Island which is located a few mile West of Spanish Wells. It's a very protected anchorage that will take care of us through the front, and also in the general direction that we wish to go. Ultimately we're looking for a weather window to make the crossing to the Abacos. Hopefully our chance will come after this front blows through. Our PEAK paddle board has been very temperamental. Even right out of the box it leaked from the fill valve. A bit of petroleum jelly on the seal would help it hold air for a little while. Unfortunately the glue began to fail along the side of the paddle board which created another leak - which we patched... then another leak occurred. To be fair, any inflatable board lives a VERY hard life in the tropical sun, but we were quite careful about keeping it covered, half-deflated, and also treated it with a UV blocker. Despite these efforts the board still leaked. It leaked so much, in fact, that we dubbed the board our "Leaky Peaky". Thankfully PEAK did the right thing and set us a full refund even though the board was well outside of it's warranty. We definitely appreciate the gesture on their part, and we'll likely give them another shot in the future, but perhaps we'll go for a fiberglass board instead of the more vulnerable inflatable. We have some unexpected "fun" when tacking out of the South River, on our way back around to Annapolis. I purchased a Down-the-Hatch ventilator from West Marine, which really helped to keep the cabin livable during the searing summer heat, but the top batten which holds it open broke after a month of use, so I attempt a repair ... Finally we are on our way to Baltimore despite uncooperative winds. I end up sailing during the night to Rock Creek just outside Baltimore. A sailor never wastes a fair wind. I also revisit raising a gaff mainsail, this time from an aerial point of view, and explain the flying anchor set. After anchoring at Amadee Lighthouse we set off to dive the 2 Shipwrecks at nearby Tabou Reef. They are both in 26 metres of water and close to each other. It was Friday when we attached the dinghy to the bouy on the surface which leads down to "Le Dieppoise" We were the only ones around and had the whole wreck to ourselves. "Le Dieppoise" was a French wooden Patrol boat P665 sunk on 12 January 1988. All the wooden hull has been worm eaten away leaving the aluminium superstructure.large schools of trevally and trigger Fish. This was in contrast to the following day, Saturday where 2 dive boats had pulled up to dive "Toho V" One of the boats was freediving. The visibility was outstanding."Toho V" was a Japanese Longliner sunk in 2000.

Planking has been a very fun challenge though a bit of a challenge it has been. Learning to fit the oak planks to each other has its intricacies. We need to make sure the plank fits well fore and aft but also that the bevels match so that we can put in a good bead of cotton caulking. All of this is being done with thick, unruly oak planks! Once we finish these last broadstrakes, which will be the last oak planks, we will be moving on to cedar planking. Cedar, being a much lighter wood, is likely going to be much easier to work with. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. While sailing back to Sab Blas I do some scouring work on the prop - it is full of growth and then the jib loses shape - something is wrong. The Halyard for the jib gets chafed through so we resnake the halyard back, it works out perfectly. It's dinghy time and Margarida does the first test run, she is pleased.
