If it was a red letter day for Takashi Okura’s Sled, sailing to a second followed by two wins, to take themselves to the cusp of their first regatta title in more than five years on the 52 SUPER SERIES circuit, the heavyweight title match between Azzurra and Platoon swung two and fro during three exciting windward-leeward contests. With Olympic champion Santi Lange calling tactics for skipper-helm Guillermo Parada, Azzurra seemed to falter in the first light wind race, finding themselves on the wrong side of the course and seemingly unable to match Platoon for speed. At the first top mark, Harm Müller-Spreer’s German-flagged world champions led and Azzurra were eighth and ninth at the first top windward mark. A strong run got them to sixth but in the busy traffic they lost two places. So Platoon immediately wrestled six points back from the 11 point cushion the jittery looking home team had taken on to the water this morning.

After a spirited head-to-head against Platoon, which spanned three, intense, three-race days, Azzurra clinched the 2019 title with one race to spare. Competing in perfect, champagne sailing conditions – 20 knots of northwesterly wind and sparkling September sunshine – a smart solo move on the final downwind of the second race today allowed them to finally put enough points on Harm Müller-Spreer’s German-flagged rivals to finally render the emblematic YCCS crew uncatchable. Lead by Argentine skipper-helm Guillermo Parada with compatriot and long-time friend, Olympic champion Santiago Lange calling tactics, the Azzurra crew add to the 52 SUPER SERIES season titles won in 2012, 2015 and 2017 and draw back level, at four titles apiece, matching the record of 2018 champions Quantum Racing who today finished the season in third, just two points behind Platoon.

Voici le dernier volet d'une modeste présentation de nos 50 jours consécutifs passés à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain en 2019. Nous répétons le même scénario depuis plusieurs années, mais nous n'avions jamais pris le temps de documenter et surtout, de présenter notre expérience. Nous naviguons à 4 (2 adultes, 2 enfants en bas âge) sur un Hunter 30 Cherubini 1980 que nous avons remis à notre goût ces dernières années. Nous tenons habituellement de 8 à 9 jours avec notre réservoir d'eau et le réservoir d'eaux noires. Cette année, nous avons hissé les voiles chaque jour pour lesquels nous avons navigué. Nous avons parcouru une distance totale de 610 miles nautiques sur le fond et consommé 32 litres de diesel en 7 semaines. la plus grande distance parcourue sur le fond fut de 35,2 miles nautiques en près de 7 hrs 30. Il n'y a eu qu'une seule journée entière de pluie... notre vitesse de croisière se situe aux alentours de 5 noeuds. Nous espérons inspirer ceux qui doutent du plaisir que l'on peut avoir à naviguer sur le Lac Champlain avec une jeune famille et partager quelques'uns de nos mouillages et des quelques moments de bonheurs passés sur l'eau. Heavy Weather Sailing. You can’t avoid heavy weather - squalls and even storms pop up unexpectedly. We once had a Tropical Storm pop up and we had absolutely no warning. So…if you’re going to become a Bluewater cruiser it’s important to know what options you have bad weather strikes. When we get hit with heavy weather or high winds - say above 30 knots, we furl the headsail into the first reef or second. When the weather gets really bad and our headsail is too large for the conditions (even when reefed), we have the ability to furl in the headsail in completely, and then move a stay from the side of the boat up to the front so to use a staysail. So, with our rigging configuration, we can essentially turn our boat into a cutter rig. A rig that has two headsails. The staysail is a smaller sail and can handle heavier weather conditions. Handing over the keys of the boat for the first time was very hard for us and I hope you don't get a bad impression. I was a little conflicted of whether to release some of the content in this one as it shows some true feelings from us with the charter business. It may give the wrong impression but we try to give you the reality or our lives/boat life as always. It's not always fun and games in this business. These charter guests were very nice people and we think there may have just been a miscommunication in how to use the main sail, most likely our fault, lesson learnt, but so glad we could help them out and get them on their way. In this tech episode we show you a few more things Hanse missed before the handover, the biggest Swedish cycle race and what happened during the first charter of the season.

Many people visit Barcelona, a few miles outside the busy city is Castelldefels the town centre and beach are fantastic. Thousands come to the ten-mile beach from Barcelona in the summer. This video is about the town centre that's is full of life all year round. This is Castelldefels town centre, and on a quiet Sunday morning, it's possible to sit, take a moment and reflect, in these beautiful surroundings? The town centre is the traditional hub of this busy and trendy place. Castelldefels is close to Port Ginesta Marina and has a beach that stretches for over ten miles. Reaching out from the centre are pedestrianised walkways. One of the main walkways leads to Castelldefels train station. Throughout the day, people arrive and join in the way of life in Castelldefels. It's the daily meeting point of all who are lucky enough to call this place home. The fun revolves around the square; it's busy every night with locals and visitors eating out often enjoying free entertainment. Colourful and sometimes boisterous events take place all year round. There is something in Castelldefels for everyone. We are blessed that our Hospital is just a short stroll from the town centre. How to Gybe (aka Jibe) a Sail Boat If you want to refine jibing/gybing IRL, get yourself on one of our ASA courses, as this is a critical skill for your 103/104 certification, as taught in our Intermediate Course :) https://sailingvirgins.com/courses/ Introduction Gybing (aka Jibing) is turning a boat so its stern passes through the wind. It is the opposite of a tack. The angle that the boat will turn in a typical gybe is around 60-100 degrees Two types of gybing are covered here: standard jibe and slam jibe Some people are afraid of gybing. However, it is fine if a decent method is followed. When hearing the term “gybe”, think “mainsheet”. This is the most important line in a gybe. Gybing the foresail is no big deal, just don’t dump the old working sheet (if the sail goes in front of the boat, it could take you ages to get it back in) If all else fails, wear round (other names for this are Chicken Gybe and perhaps Wending) Pre-Gybe Helm brings the boat to between a broad reach and dead run. Then the helm makes the call “Prepare To Gybe” (or whatever is agreed on your boat - some people prefer "Standby To Gybe") Secure the traveller Get out of the “hot zone” (where the mainsheet will cross the boat) Don’t sit on the coamings (above the seat in a cockpit) or else you may get intimate with a winch. Standard Gybe Steps Bring the mainsheet in so the boom is near the center Helm makes the call “Turning” then starts the turn Mainsheet trimmer removes the handle Helm makes call “Gybe…. HO” with the HO happening when the leech flips over Helm counter-steers to ensure the boat stays on a straight heading Mainsheet trimmer eases the mainsheet Ease foresail working sheet while taking in on the opposite sheet Slam Gybe Steps Ensure the mainsheet zone is clear and traveller is centered Put the vang on in order to pull down the boom (and tension the leech) Helm makes the call “Standby to Gybe”, then “Turning” at which point he starts the turn Make sure someone (it could be the helm) guides the mainsheet across Smooth Gybe You want to keep the speed of your boat up during a gybe This reduces the stress on your rigging and makes the gybe much smoother Bring the mainsheet in, and just when it’s close to center, start the turn As soon as the gybe-ho call happens, ease out the mainsheet and counter-turn the wheel. Summary Gybing is safe if done properly Lock your traveler, think about the mainsheet Counter-turn as soon as the boat gybes, to stop risk of heading straight into a close haul on teh other tack Ease that mainsheet as soon as the boat gybes Be clear on your calls Have fun! Buongiorno! This week, we finally reach Italy from Corsica under sail, and make landfall in beautiful Sardinia. Our time in Sardinia is short but sweet. It starts by a Mistral getting us stuck onboard for a few days before we are finally able to leave Polar Seal and dinghy to shore. Unfortunately, our anchorage consists mainly of resorts, and our attempts at going to land take us in deep ends of a luxury hotel, where we are as stuck as we were onboard. When we finally leave and set sails towards Cannigione,we stumble upon the pizza world champion and pay them a visit (A visit during which I make a small revelation). We continue our Sardinian sail towards Cala Gonone, where we stop for the night before heading towards Sicily. Sailing East in the Caribbean has always been called the "Thorny Path" because it's not all that easy to do. Ideally you wait for an unusual break in the highly consistent trade winds, or pray for the angle to shift just enough to the north that you can eek out a ESE voyage. But more typically you find yourself motoring into the wind and waves as that window just doesn't seem to come. This was the case we found ourselves in after waiting for the ideal window that never developed. And if you watched our Salty Dawg video, you'll know we were really looking forward to some calm sailing after our passage south. Here's how it all went! Along the way we shared our experiences with family and friends via YouTube, and by happenstance created the first "sailing channel." But more than anything, we realized what an incredible experience that first trip was and that someday we wanted to do it again, only this time with our kids. OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal.  At the time of posting this we are dealing with a repair in the South Pacific, and in 2020 we hope to be in New Zealand and Southeast Asia. By 2021 we will be in the Med and close to completing our circumnavigation. We've had a lot of you guys requesting more affordable project boat tours, and this one definitely qualifies. The Bayfield 36 is a great boat model for a couple to own, refit, and cruise aboard. It's a cutter-rigged, full-keeled, go-anywhere bluewater cruiser at a realistic price point, and it has a bath tub! We love the design, but our two biggest complaints are engine access and the location of the chart table.
