If you missed the first one - watch it here: https://youtu.be/QsUtLueyKp4 Having sailed quickly from Spain to Turkey and visiting many interesting places in the last blog, we struggled sailing East to West with strong winds either on the nose or no wind at all for most of the way. A three week wait for good winds in Sardinia also put us way behind schedule and reduced our options for crossing the Atlantic. It didn't stop us visiting some spectacular places though, including Roman cities, active volcanoes and beautiful beaches. As with pt 01, we each had our own personal favourite moments and it was difficult to include everything. It's a shame YouTube's family unfriendly policy means we unfortunately haven't included many of the kids favourite bits - meeting up with other kids - as it would mean we have to re-categorise the video '..for kids' :/ You might also notice that the maintenance bits have been left out as we wanted a lighthearted retrospective of our journey - but look out for new dedicated maintenance blogs in the new year! But that was better than westerly winds which were soon to be coming so we made the decision to set sail to Uligan. Knowing we'd be in for light winds doesn't make it any less frustrating, as we tried all different kinds of sail combinations to keep Starry Horizons moving. Some worked, some didn't and the iron genny made up the difference. At least we had a TON of dolphins come to keep us company and lift morale onboard! At last we are back in the water and ready to start new adventures. Here is the replay of the whole launching event. The video quality is only 720p and the audio is at times terrible but up to 120 folks stuck it out and saw the splash at RAM Marina, a very tight exit, a motor under the famous bridge, as Zaya found Leo a safe place to sit and watch (in one of the cockpit lockers!) and our Russian friend Alex (Rasputin) handled the camera, a pass-by the Spanish fort Castilla de Phillipe and then a return along the other shore to see some of the beautiful riverside properties, back under the bridge where we ran into difficulty finding a berth, only to tie up alongside the bar at MAR Marina. A raging fire had been going for over 4 days, caused by an 55 year old who was working with a Welding Machine. The blaze forced the evacuation of about 9,000 people. More than 700 firefighters supported by 11 helicopters and five hydroplanes were struggling to contain the fire. Grand Canaria in the Canary Islands is an island we did not intend visiting, but the pressing need for our Life Raft took us there. We have previously packed, or rather tied it together and couriered it off to Viking in Grand Canaria so that they could put the genie back in the bottle. Frustrated that it had not yet arrived back in Lanzarote, we decided to sail there and go to their offices direct. Long story short, they did put the genie back, and also made certain that the contents of the Life Raft was 100% accounted for. This exercise put us back 1,700 EUR . . . Anilao is easily one of the best places in the world for macro photography as well as blackwater diving, and now bonfire diving. Bonfire diving is a relatively new experience offered to divers. Rather than venture out into the deep black water, suspended by a tether to the bottom of the drifting boat (think pelagic magic in Hawaii) usually quite a distance from shore above a mile+ deep trench, bonfire dives are quite the opposite. You pick a location with little current, in about 35-40 feet of water and suspend a bright light system from a mooring line. This serves as the attraction for the plankton which is drawn to the light and brings lots of critters to you. The challenging part, as a diver, is to remain suspended at around 20 feet, typically 20-25 feet away from the lights with no landscape to help with your bearing. At times I followed critters to 38 feet and up to the surface! The plankton is moving at incredible speeds and it's difficult to hover, hold a light just enough to illuminate but not burn out the subject and hold a camera steady to capture video. It's truly a miracle that as many video segments turned out and were more or less in focus. Brown did an INCREDIBLE job slowing down most of the critters by 90% so that you can actually experience their outer spaciness! Make sure and watch the end of the video where he gives you his GoPro Hero 7 underwater settings that he used to capture the bonfire dive video. In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we continue with our work on Chelsea whilst she is out of the water. We are in the shipyard and have finally cleaned all of Chelsea's hull - which was pretty badly fouled with barnacles and sea-worm. We get a coat of primer on her and change the oil in the sail drive. It's a long wait for the anti-foul but it eventually turns up and we are excited to get Chelsea's bum finished! Ryan also works had to polish Chelsea and get her beautiful and shiny and after 2 weeks of nonstop work, Chelsea is finished! Unfortunately, the maintenance that we complete is only a small part of the problems we currently face. With all our electronics needing replacing, we are still waiting for this work to be done, which is turning out to be a much longer wait than the 5 days originally quoted! Installing 4.88 gears in the Dana 35 for our Jeep Wrangler with a 2.5L, how we did it and what to expect during the install. See the tools and parts used for this install below. Now everyone says you should just go with a bigger engine, there is no replacement for displacement, we don't think this. When you are on the trail turning moderate size tires, going slow helps, give you that extra time to think about the stupid things you may get your jeep stuck in. This Jeep has 32-inch tires and with that said 4.56 would have probably got it down to like the factory on the speedometer. With the new gears, the speedometer is 5 miles slow at 55 MPH, but the power is awesome. We can drive uphill at speed in 5th gear now with no issues, and if the hill is gentle, even gain speed. In 4 low the crawl speed is slow, we're talking you can get out and walk much faster than the jeep. We hope this helps you with your dana 35 install, and most gear changes in the GM 10, GM 12, Dana 35, or in most axles are the same. It is the shim points that differ and crush shim or fixed shim in different differentials. This is not an easy project, and not having the right tools can make it very hard to impossible, plus you can destroy your new ring and pinion. Thanks for joining us on our Sojourn to the islands of the Caribbean! The REAL Cape Hatteras After our failed attempt on Bermuda we turn south for Norfolk with hopes to try again. We complete the long Island Sound, thend head down the East River into Hell Gate (overnight) and arrive in New York City where we anchor in front of the Statue of Liberty! After a few days anchored on the Hudson River we sail the Jersey coast to Cape May to ride out another strorm. We formulate another plan for Bermuda based on an upcomming window and leave Cape May for Cape Hatteras where we would head South, then Directly East for Bermuda but the weather window changes and we are forced to abandon our plan and fight extreme life threatenning conditions as we round Cape Hatteras. Cape Hatteras is one of the worst navigational hazard zones on the Atlantic coast of NA and it is not to be underestimated. We got our Cape Hatterasses handed to us.
