In this episode we pick ourselves up after our little wobble following our 5-day sail from Lisbon, and set off exploring the weird and wonderful Canary Islands. Lanzarote felt like another planet and was windy as hell - we couldn't wait to leave. Tenerife was incredible and the only place we have visited on this adventure where we could actually imagine ourselves living - it's not just the British package-holiday destination it is known to be. Dazcat Catamaran 1195 Sueños makes a speedy and super comfortable cruising cat. In February 2018 Dazcat Media joined owner Rupert Kidd and his friend Alan for the passage back home - across from the Canary Islands , up the Portuguese and Spanish coasts and then across Biscay back to Falmouth. If you've ever wondered how comfortable a Dazcat actually is for cruising then this should answer a few of those questions. The family have been living on board for seven months and the passage is made with Sueños fully loaded with all the comforts of home. Rupert and Alan are very skilled and experienced sailors, long time friends and it was a real pleasure to sail with them. I hope you enjoy the gentle rhythm of life at sea with these two master seamen; how they deal with the inevitable minor dramas that occur and the ongoing maintenance that all cruisers need to do; how they dodge the Atlantic weather at that time of year; Rupert sharing his passion and knowledge for geology as well as pointing out the hazards and highlights along our route. There's plenty to enjoy here and for many plenty to learn as well. Sailing Catamaran Exploring Ono Island Mantas, Sunday Lunch and Survivor - Exploring Ono Island. This week we leave Suva and head south to Kadavu and Ono Islands. Jo has a rant at the rogue fishing boats enroute and we put the anchor down in our own private bay at Yakuve Lailai Island. Here we explore the crystal clear water and head ashore to stagger and stumble up a very steep slope whilst wearing flip flops . We make it to a wonderful lookout to take in the view around the island. After waiting for the 'Survivor' film crew to finish filming on a nearby 'desert' island, we continue south to Vorulevu island and go for a swim with a beautiful manta ray. We are plagued with changeable weather , so we move again and tuck into the gorgeous Nabouwalu Bay, on the west side of Ono. We head ashore to the village and after presenting our Sevusevu to the chief, we have a wander around the village. Not only do we get to see the local hot spring, but get invited to Sunday lunch with the village headman Issac and his family. We had hoped to dive the Alacrity rocks, but weather and the conditions just weren't in our favour and with stronger windy weather forecast, we decide to head back to Suva to sit it out. Coppercoat Antifouling is the alternative to antifouling paint we applied after an extensive blister repair job renovating our old 1976 Valiant 40 Sailboat, and then choosing and applying bottom paint to prevent marine growth. We did NOT 100% follow the instructions for this Coppercoat Application, and had a few things go wrong. Will our Coppercoat application for antifouling be a total failure? Or will the Coppercoat succeed despite some changes during the application of the Coppercoat - an antifouling epoxy with copper powder in it? If it is successful, Coppercoat may relieve us of applying antifouling paint for a decade or more. We did the application of this Coppercoat Antifouling ourselves, with the help of some unskilled laborers off the street, as well as some semi-skilled and skilled laborers from Fleet Management at Zululand Yacht Club/Boatyard, always under the direction and supervision of Patrick Childress. Antifouling the hull of a sailboat successfully is a constant quest for us..one we may never find! We do believe we will have to continue scrubbing the bottom on a monthly basis to remove marine growth! Also, for those curious...the cost of Coppercoat. We had always thought it was a job that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Because we did it diy and hired some semi skilled laborers, it cost us under $2000 usd for everything, labor and materials...so not much more than a good quality antifouling paint. As a crewmember aboard a Seamester sailing vessel, not only are you an integral part of sailing the vessel from point a to point b, but also managing all other aspects of life aboard a sailing yacht. All responsibilities on board are divided up using a small rotational chart referred to as the job wheel. The job wheel assigns each crew member with their role for the upcoming day. Every morning the wheel turns, giving you a new responsibility. Here are just a few of the roles you will fill during your seamester voyage. Skipper: The skipper serves as the leader of the vessel. As skipper you ensure that all onboard operations and program activities are running smoothly and on time. And in the evening you’ll record the day's activities in the ship’s log. Chef/Sous Chef Potentially the most important role aboard, the head chef and sous chef plan and prepare each meal, serving up delicious food to everyone on board. Bosun/Deckie As bosun, you are the leader of the deckie team. You’ll head up all on deck activities such as securing dinghies, deck washes, and setting and striking the ensign at sunrise and sunset. Engineer As engineer you’ll ensure all boat systems are operating smoothly. With regular system checks, you’ll monitor the engine, generator, and water maker to ensure safe operation. Working as a crew provides a great platform for strong bonds and lifelong friendships to form. And being responsible for every aspect of life aboard the vessel makes it truly feel like you’ve earned every mile of your voyage.

We had and amazing Trip to Rainbow River Dunnella Florida! We snorkeled the river and experienced the raw nature. We were visited by river otters, alligators, bass, blue gill, gar, turtles and more! This Beautiful Spring fed River is a magical place! Amazing crystal clear waters! We took our Highfield Dinghy and were able to snorkel and float the springs! Rainbow river is a protected habitat and you are not allowed to bring in anything that is considered disposable. We repackaged food and drinks in silicone bags and Yeti cups. It was awesome to see how everybody obeys the laws! We did not see ANY trash or litter at all. This is a manatee area but we did not see any on our trip! Sur internet pour trouverez des produits qui détournent leur usage afin de vous aider à manœuvrer vos winchs sur votre bateau. Regardons de plus près cette alternative afin de voir si elle fonctionne vraiment. Bien sûr, la première question est de voir si ces machines sont assez puissante. Pour faire un test, nous installons un embout mâle de winch sur une perceuse. La configuration sur ce banc de test reproduit les efforts de bases que nous avons à bord en manœuvrant. Il y a 100 kg à soulever sur un winch Harken de taille 35. Quand vous manœuvrez manuellement, l'effort appliqué sur la poignée de la manivelle est d'environ 20 Kg en étant sur la grande vitesse du winch. C'est un effort standard lors d'une manœuvre en mer. Quand vous montez votre grand-voile,ou pour étarquer votre génois par exemple. Maintenant mettons à l'épreuve les différentes perceuses. Comme vous pouvez le constater, La première ne fait pas l'affaire même si elle est conçue pour 45 Newton mètres. La deuxième perceuse quiest plus puissante ne fonctionne pas. La dernière, ne fait pas l'affaire non plus. Aucune des perceuses, même le modèle le plus puissant donnés à 120 Newton mètre n’ont eu assez de puissance pour manœuvrer dans des conditions standard à bord. Si nous passons maintenant sur la deuxième vitesse du winch, je veux dire, la vitesse lente du winch, alors l'effort sur la poignée est limitée, environ 8 Kg. Comme vous le voyez, seul la perceuse la plus puissante peut amèner une aide très limitée et cela n'est clairement pas au niveau des efforts qui seront rencontrés à bord lors des manœuvres. Vous observerez également que,si ces machines sont des outils merveilleux pour percer des trous leur ergonomie n'est vraiment pas adaptée pour manœuvrer votre winch en plus d'être parfois dangereux. Parlons maintenant d'Ewincher. Avec Ewincher, c'est vraiment facile de lever ces 100 KG en vitesse rapide du winch et nous ne sommes ici qu'a 60% de sa puissance maximale. L'effort de 20 kg sur la poignée est vraiment simple à compenser, même avec une seule main puisque l'ergonomie est parfaitement adaptée. Ewincher a clairement la puissance nécessaire en plus d'autres fonctionnalités qui rendront toutes vos manœuvres simples, rapides et très précises.
