A walk around of my 1984 Jeep CJ7. I’ve owned my CJ7 for 32 years. The Jeep has a mainly stock interior/exterior, but it has a 4” lift, front locker, 33” BF Goodrich mud tires, Bilstein shocks, Warn M8000 winch, Warn drive lights, D rings, Borla exhaust, fuel injection and brake booster.

Still bobbing around the Caribbean with my friend Romain onboard. He is obviously a much better fisherman than I am, since I had been trolling my fish line for month without anything catching and in less than 1 minute he managed to get a mackerel that made a delicious lunch. Then we sailed to St Barth but only touched land quickly for some food before heading towards ile fourchue where we could enjoy some really nice snorkeling and a run on the island. Racing on their own home waters, Hasso Plattner’s Phoenix 11 made a dream start to the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront – Cape Town regatta, the first event of six that comprise the 2020 52 SUPER SERIES. Local knowledge and a protracted spell of training late last year and before this season’s curtain raiser played its part as Phoenix completed a textbook first race that they won comfortably. Then, after a less than perfect start to the second contest, Phoenix battled from the bottom third of the fleet to deliver a valuable third place finish. Plattner’s crew lead the regatta by two points from the 2019 champions Azzurra who returned a fourth and a second, a solid debut day for new tactician Michele Paoletti. In the south westerly breeze, which picked up to 16kts for the second start and averaged 10-13 kts for the day, conditions were not easy to read – consistency proving particularly elusive. Phoenix 11, the newer of the two Plattner family TP52s, were undoubtedly the class act delivering for the home support.

Technical breakdowns unsettled Hasso Plattner’s Phoenix 11 team as the 2019 circuit champions Azzurra maintained their consistent form to overhaul the local Cape Town favourites who drop to second place after four races have been sailed at the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront – Cape Town regatta. After a solid win in Race 3, the first of today, Phoenix 11 maintained their points advantage over Azzurra, which finished in second. But a pedestal winch gearing breakdown between races unsettled the local team who suffered a breakage of their aftmost port side stanchion to further compound their problems. The resulting seventh sees Plattner’s crew drop two points behind the Roemmers family’s Azzurra, which has sailed three second places from four starts and seems to have maintained the consistency that served them well last season, even after integrating new tactician Michele Paoletti.

After a very disappointing opening to the Odzala Discovery Camps 52 SUPER SERIES V&A Waterfront – Cape Town regatta, Harm Muller-Spreer’s world champions Platoon bounced back to record a second and first today as the top scoring boat in the fleet. But, after six races have been sailed off Cape Town, it is still the 2019 overall title holders Azzurra who lead, today extending their cushion to ten points. Azzurra’s consistency, posting a 3.5 point average for the day, is the result of patience, minimising risk and obviously good boat speed, while Platoon’s three-points aggregate for this third day of five planned racing days, moves them to within three points of second-placed Phoenix 11. But to date all of the races have been sailed in light to moderate breezes, often one-sided drag racing off the start line. All that is widely expected to change tomorrow, Thursday, as the brisk south-easterly ‘Cape Doctor’ is forecast to arrive, for one day only. This could prove a decisive day in terms of shaking up the leaderboard.

More battling the rain and failed tarping attempts. We are finally getting somewhere though. We "scuffed" the primer up and prepped for paint. We applied 1 coat of bilgekote to the parts that have been primered and things are really startiing to look good. Another layer or 2 will make a huge difference! Bilgekote needs to be applied thinly as it seems to run pretty easily but when it hardens, it feels like it's adding a bunch of strength to it! Is fixing up an old sailboat with 500 huge, rotten blisters worth the time and money? In this episode, we reflect if it worth doing this blister repair job to our old boat, and how much it cost to do the blister repair, and painting. Should we have just bought a new boat without any hull blisters? Or is any sailboat, old or new, just a treadmill of maintenance and repair? In South Africa, we did a huge resin blister repair job on our 1976, Valiant 40 sailboat, named Brick House, which took months and months, a lot of work, and some cash. We then painted the boat, and made some other cosmetic repairs before launching her to continue sailing around South Africa, and eventually across the South Atlantic. Patrick demonstrates how he finished the blister repair, fared, puttied and sanded, and did a total boat restoration on our old Valiant 40. Step by Step, our sailboat is transformed from an old blistered boat to a gorgeous, smooth, sleek looking yacht! A new boat would be nice...but we there is positive economics with doing work in a foreign country and build equity into our mobile home. Unless someone gives us a nice new Swan 48 that requires no maintenance or upgrades yeah right!) , we will keep up the maintenance on our boat to keep is better than new. And then there is the usual problem of renewing visas... We need to keep a daily watch on developments around the world which will inevitably impact all of us. At the time of writing, no children have died and most healthy mid-life adults have survived. Health workers are at greater risk because they are being exposed more than the rest of us. Older people and those with pre-existing medical complaints are the ones taking the brunt of the disease. But it is early days yet and scientists are working hard to gather data from around the world to establish the parameters of the disease. It is our duty to try to stop its spread and to ensure we do not pass it on (even unwittingly) to our older or infirm friends, workmates and family. It's time we go sailing down the west coast of Santiago island. But before that our friend Anton takes us to visit a couple of his favourite spots, his aunt's bar and a black sand beach. And then it's time to get Galopin ready. His deck is covered in desert dust. His hull is like my face, stubbly and unkempt. And his motor won't start, then it won't stop. We postponed our departure which gave time for our friend Lola to come aboard. It was superb sailing conditions. 20kt wind at our back, sunny weather stunning scenery and good friends. The only problem it was too short. But when we arrive at our destination, we find a wonderful protected cove and a host of locals who take us away. Some say it’s The Best Sailing Channel on YouTube! When PARADISE turns to HELL | Sailing Martinique | 98 | Beau and Brandy Sailing We continue sailing up the west coast of Martinique into the harbor of St. Pierre. Here one of the deadliest volcanoes overlooks the anchorage. In 1902 the volcano erupted and leveled the town of 30,000 in 3 seconds. Hundreds of ships burst into flames and sunk, not able to break away from their anchors in time. We dive one of these ships that sunk during the eruption, the Amelie. It’s quite eerie to see something growing beautifully underwater that ends so tragically. We heard there was one survivor found alive in St. Pierre four days after the eruption. He was locked in his underground jail cell, which in turn saved his life, because the deadly gas and ash were unable to reach him. We were able to go into town and look around at the destruction. Lots of areas, including the jail cell and the local theater still remain just as the day the volcano erupted.
