The fantastic Lorient-La Base was once again buzzing with excitement for the Défi Azimut. Now in its 15th year, the event brings together 12 pairs of skippers on their Imoca foiling 60 footers for what was to be another intense, festive and friendly week. Ray Davies of Emirates Team New Zealand recently made a vibrant stop in Naples, Italy, ahead of the upcoming Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup, and was left in awe: of both the city and its sailing conditions. “This is Naples. It’s unreal!” said Davies. “From what I’ve seen in just two days, it’s absolutely sensational.” Having competed in Naples during the America’s Cup World Series events in 2012 and 2013, Davies returns with fresh eyes, now envisioning the AC75s racing across the iconic Bay of Naples. Thomas de Dinechin's mast broke during the 56th edition of La Solitaire du Figaro Paprec in September 2025. De Dinechin was sailing aboard the boat, Almond for Pure Océan, when the dismasting occurred. From roll-out at dawn to dock-in at sunset, here is a full day at the Cagliari Base lived through the team’s eyes. The fleet leaves the dock for the sailing session while design team and shore team monitor every detail, from onboard systems to radio communications. The conditions for the day were similar to Tuesday but with a forecast of strong southerly winds arriving mid-afternoon, so expectations were for one or two races. Acquired by her current owner in 2021, she was entrusted to KM Yachtbuilders in the Netherlands for a transformative 12-month refit. The result is, in essence, a brand-new yacht built within a classic hull. Almost every element, apart from the hull and decks, has been renewed with state-of-the-art systems, electronics, and technology, while the interior has undergone a complete refurbishment. 'Weatherly' may have a classic appearance with her West Epoxy hull; her performance is anything but traditional. With a deep draught and a displacement of only eighteen tons, Weatherly delivers remarkable speed under sail. She is sloop rigged with carbon spars, North Sails sails, Harken deck gear, and Navtec hydraulic rig controls. The race won event of the year at the RYA Affiliate Awards 2025. The RYA's team was made up of just over 80% of female sailors all of varying abilities from a race coach to a complete beginner and everything in between. Ahead of the event Adam McGovern (RYA North Regional Manager) got a team of volunteers together to get the boat prepped and repaired. The boat was purchased & upcycled with a small budget of £300 (£150 to purchase & £150 to repair), showing that you don’t need to spend loads of money to go sailing, just the willingness to learn some new skills and get stuck in! It also has stopped a once competitive boat from being left in a dinghy park for years to come, this is key for a more sustainable approach to sailing. Following the event, the boat has been donated to WLYC to support more people with getting out on the water racing. With three hurricanes roaming around the Atlantic basin it wasn't an ideal time to be completing our Atlantic circuit! We did have what looked like a decent weather window to sail from the Azores to Portugal but we always knew with all the disturbance the Atlantic was not at its most stable. Hurricane Gabrielle was making its turn near Bermuda and all the models had it disappearing into the Northern Atlantic.
