Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles Andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. 2021 war es dann endlich soweit, mit zwei komplett überholten Motoren und einem neuen Geräteträger starteten wir Anfang Juli Richtung Südfrankreich.Leider hatten wir für die gesamte Reise nur zwei Monate Zeit, deswegen hieß es die meiste Zeit Strecke machen. Doch manchmal nahmen wir uns die Zeit zu verweilen, uns Orte näher anzuschauen. Seitdem lag Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, und der Refit hatte begonnen. Am 17 August 2025 ist es wieder so weit. Obwohl Squib noch nicht ganz fertig ist, werfen wir die Leinen los und starten unsere erste Etappe donauabwärts. Dreieinhalb Wochen später erreichen wir das Donaudelta, der Mast wird gestellt, ein passendes Wetterfenster abgewartet, in zwei Sclägen überqueren wir das Schwarze Meer bis zum Bosporus. Ohne Einzuklarieren mit gehisster Q Flagge durchqueren wir die Türkei und erreichen 5 Tage später die Ägäis. Über Limnos und die nördlichen Sporaden segeln wir bis in den Großraum Athen, von wo aus Sabina nach Hause fliegt, weil ihr Urlaub zu Ende ist. When the clocks go back, the gales sweep in and the nights become unpleasantly long, its time for most normal people to lay up their boats or head for sunnier climes down south. But not in the offshore rock star scene. For them, the end of October means it’s time to get out there and put hammer down across the Atlantic in a double handed race from Le Havre to Martinique, the Transat Cafe L’Or. It’s a huge event in France and pulls in everyone from the most accomplished to the rising stars of the shorthanded offshore world. And the locals know it. It might be winter but the start is as much a festival of high tech sail as it it about a long distance event with a race village that pulls in thousands of spectators every day. The boats are something else as well, with each of the four classes representing the leading edge of offshore racing from the massive 32m Ultims, to the insane Ocean Fifties that will blast their way around the two longest courses. In the monohulls its the IMOCA 60 footers, several of which have come hot foot from The Ocean Race Europe, through to the biggest class of the four, the radical looking Class 40s. In the first of several features based on this race, the boats and the characters involved, PlanetSail was there at the start in Le Havre to stroll the docks, talk to the key players and feel the vibe around one of France’s biggest offshore races.

🌴 Sailing from St. Thomas to the British Virgin Islands! | Cooper Island, The Baths & Bitter End Adventure 🌊⛵ We’re saying goodbye to beautiful St. Thomas and setting sail for the British Virgin Islands (BVIs)! 🇻🇬 Before leaving, we dinghy into town one last time for lunch and to grab our final Amazon packages (yes, you can actually get Amazon deliveries in St. Thomas — island life perks!). After checking out of St. Thomas and clearing into West End, Tortola, we spend the night on a mooring ball before heading to Cooper Island to meet up with our friends on Optimist Creed (and borrow their washing machine 😅). From there, the adventure continues — our friends Tammy and Raymond arrive (they even brought us parts, groceries, and fun goodies for the kids — like Christmas on the boat!). We explore, relax, and enjoy all that Cooper Island has to offer before making our way to the iconic Baths on Virgin Gorda — one of the most incredible spots in all the BVIs. The Baths are a natural maze of massive granite boulders, tunnels, and tidal pools — a truly magical place we got to experience nearly all to ourselves. And the best news? Raymond (our onboard mechanic extraordinaire!) fixed our broken washing machine — just in time for our next passage to St. Martin! 🎙️ Testo video – Elica di poppa: come funziona e perché è indispensabile per manovrare "Se hai una barca, soprattutto con un motore singolo e un’elica sola, saprai quanto può essere complicato muoversi lateralmente, cioè spostarsi a destra o a sinistra in porto. In queste situazioni, un’elica sola non basta. Ed è qui che entra in gioco l’elica di poppa. L’elica di poppa è montata trasversalmente proprio sullo specchio di poppa della barca, e ti permette di spingere la poppa verso destra o sinistra, quando serve. È uno strumento fondamentale per chi vuole manovrare in spazi stretti, correggere manovre sbagliate all’ultimo secondo o semplicemente avere il pieno controllo dell’imbarcazione. Se la usi insieme all’elica di prua, puoi letteralmente far muovere la barca in qualsiasi direzione, con la massima precisione e senza stress — anche in condizioni difficili, come vento o corrente.
