Sara Nocella and GS34 BLU: Where the Grand Soleil Story Began Sara Nocella sails a piece of history: BLU, her Grand Soleil 34, is the very first yacht ever built by Cantiere del Pardo back in 1973.More than a boat, it is the origin of a legacy — the model that marked the beginning of the Grand Soleil spirit, combining elegance, craftsmanship, and the unmistakable Made in Italy character. Through Sara’s experience, the GS34 reveals its timeless nature: a yacht that continues to inspire passion and authenticity, just as it did over fifty years ago.A tribute to heritage, to sailing, and to the enduring bond between an owner and an iconic boat that started it all.

Day 32, Solo NonStop Circumnavigation: The Rain Woke me up, and I had major cleaning to do. And I switched my charger over to battery two after losing a towel cleaning the cockpit up! But in the end we slipped through the “Squall Gate!” I hope you guys are enjoying the new editing! I am - let me know in the comments. WILL ANSWER ALL COMMENTS WHEN I HAVE SERVICE! ❤️ 🐶 ♋️ The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Captain Kimmer, Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. We depart Olbia after an immense laundry bill. With no money left for food, Nicole is forced to exercise her culinary muscle. She doesn't disappoint and feeds me well as we sail our way to Stromboli. The passage starts with strong beam winds as we guide Breezy through the rocky eastern coast of Sardinia. I misjudge the course of another vessel along the way and we pass close enough to exchange pleasantries. Once out into the Tyrrhenian sea and are met by a steep following sea that rolls the new HR44 hull side to side as the winds are directly behind us. Nicole keeps the sanity on board with calm and cooking. Providing well needed nourishment on board is essential to maintain stamina and happiness during these longer passages. We are gifted a fair wind on our first night and the following day enjoy a visit from a friendly pod of dolphins. We arrive at Stromboli at dawn from the north the next morning, the best time of arrival to witness the eruptions. Our good timing rewards us with a spectacular view of the Stromboli volcano that lives up to its nickname: "The lighthouse of the Mediterranean." Today I sailed home my new to me 1972 Bristol Carvel 22. I purchased for a great deal on eBay, if I told you how much you wouldn’t believe me so don’t even ask . Let’s just stay. It was an awesome deal. So I purchased her without ever looking at the cabin. I saw her from the shoreline, and I fell in love with this vintage sailboat. Now it’s time to start the motor for the very first time and head down the channel in East Greenwich Bay. Then it’s off to Narraganset Bay towards her new slip. This was a lovely first day of ownership. Come along with me on this journey with Sailing Vessel PAI NEY formally SV WHITE DOVE. Thank you for watching another episode of Solitude And Sailing. Fairwinds and following seas to all. Song Credits: Acustic Guitar cover song melody for Reckless Love by Cory Asbury YouTube Studios Music: Castleshire 7:14-8:18 Great Mood 9:22-10:18

What really makes a motor yacht safe, comfortable and capable of crossing oceans, not just surviving them? Sue sits down with legendary designer and lifelong cruiser Steve Dashew to talk about FPB explorer yachts, and why not every metal boat in the anchorage is created equal. Now retired from full time yacht building, Steve and Linda have swapped FPB commissioning for land yachting in Arizona, photography, and a very serious Ford truck and camper project. But Steve is still studying hulls, watching the America’s Cup, advising quietly in the background and thinking deeply about what makes a truly capable long range cruiser. Drawing on hundreds of thousands of sea miles, including Greenland, the South Pacific and long upwind slogs that most of us try to avoid, Steve explains why their approach was always “cruisers first, designers second” and how that changed the shape of FPB. A core theme in this episode is the importance of consistently high average speed at sea. Many boats can post an impressive top speed in flat water, but very few can maintain meaningful pace through crossing sea states, head seas, or long downwind passages. Steve explains why average speed, not peak speed, is the fundamental pillar of safe passagemaking. A yacht that can reliably deliver consistently high average speeds unlocks shorter passage times, the ability to ride or outrun weather systems, and, most importantly, a calmer, more predictable experience for the crew. Comfort and safety are not separate ideas; they are linked directly to whether a boat can keep moving fast while keeping motion under control. In this conversation, we dig into: • Steve explains how maintaining 10–11 knots in real ocean conditions lets you stay with favourable systems, avoid the worst of storms, and dramatically reduce fatigue on passage. As he says, “If you can keep your average up, the weather works for you. If you can’t, it works against you.” • Why explorer style yachts have exploded in popularity, and why many look like FPBs but do not behave like them when the barometer falls. • The idea of yacht design as a zero sum game, where every interior gain, hull tweak or fashion line has a direct impact on motion, steering control and safety. • How to evaluate an explorer yacht if you are planning serious miles: why you should sea trial in ugly weather, insist on going out when the broker would rather stay alongside, and look closely at the people behind the design. • The difference between a boat that “can take it” and a crew that actually wants to keep going. As Steve puts it, successful cruising is about being mentally and physically comfortable, not just structurally safe. • The story behind FPB 83 WIND HORSE. Steve and Linda staked their own money and miles on a radical concept that many experts said would not work. Tank testing, CFD and ratios got them part of the way, but the real proof came after 15,000 to 20,000 miles at sea. • Why steering control is everything offshore. FPBs are designed to surf safely at speed, why many owners are initially afraid to do so, and how average speed around 10 to 11 knots lets you work with weather systems instead of being punished by them. • The trade off between interior volume and true seagoing ability. If you care about long range cruising, motion comfort, or are quietly shopping for an explorer yacht that can really cross oceans, this is a conversation worth your time. Steve is candid about risk, generous with hard won lessons and very clear on one thing: it is much safer, and far more fun, to go fast in control than to go slowly and suffer. Whitstable Shipwright and boat builder Ron Barton established R.S.J. Barton in 1948, and was one of the first to use the fabric based laminated plastic Tufnol and stainless steel to manufacture yachting blocks which were much lighter and stronger than previously achievable. Based at Whitstable, Kent in the UK, Barton Marine produces sailing and yachting fittings which are used around the world, and continues to innovate, also designing and manufacturing hardware used outside of the marine industry. CEO Suzanne Blaustone shows us around the factory, and we meet some of the team to find out about their roles and why they love working at Barton Marine. This week didn’t exactly go the way we planned. 😅 What started as a normal few days of ticking off boat jobs in Phuket turned into a hospital visit after Archie had a heavy landing while wing foiling. The X-ray confirmed a couple of broken bones… and if that wasn’t enough, the boat decided to throw us a handful of surprises too. From clutch cone issues to watermaker failures, this was one of those curveball weeks where everything popped up at once. We also talk openly about how we handle medical care abroad without medical insurance — why we self-insure, what care looks like in Thailand, and how we navigate the unexpected while living full-time on our boat with four kids. But after a week of challenges, Archie finally got the all-clear, and we lifted the anchor to explore some of Thailand’s stunning islands… exactly the kind of reset we needed. 💛⛵️ Come along for the ride — the highs, the lows, the breakdowns, and the beautiful moments in between. ⸻ 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! Join your hosts Bela Musits and Mike Wasserman on the latest episode of the "Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of United States" podcast as they sit down with a truly remarkable guest: Erden Eruc. Erdin is an incredible individual who holds a staggering 18 Guinness World Records and is even a member of the Guinness Hall of Fame. Erden shares his extraordinary journey, including his feat as the first person to complete a solo circumnavigation of the world by human power, pedaling a bicycle on land and rowing a boat across the oceans. The conversation delves into his mental and physical preparation for his next monumental challenge: the 2026 Golden Globe Race. This legendary competition is a solo, non-stop, unassisted sailboat race around the world, replicating the original 1968 event by requiring participants to use only 1968-era technology, such as sextants and paper charts You can check out more info on Erden here: https://www.erdeneruc.com/ Connect With Us: If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe and leave a review—it helps us reach more sailing enthusiasts like you! Start of a New Sailing Season | Grenada to Martinique (180nm). Midnight Mirage - You Only Live Once.
After 5 months ashore, I’m finally back at sea! This marks the start of a new sailing season - a 180 nautical mile passage from Grenada to Martinique for some yacht maintenance. It began with pouring rain, but soon the skies cleared and the Caribbean sun returned. The water turned crystal blue, the wind settled just ahead of the beam, and "Mirage" came alive again - reaching 9 to 10 knots most of the way. Honestly… I’m speechless. It felt so good to be sailing again! This short 5-minute video has no narration - just pure motion, sea, and music. 🎵 Music: “The Life You Want to Live Once” — Midnight Mirage, Radio Miami 85FM (1984 synth magic). Perfect vibes for a perfect sail. Next up: a few cool new upgrades and improvements I’m making to Mirage! Stay tuned. #SailingMirage #Amel50 #GrenadaToMartinique #SailingLife #CaribbeanSailing #SoloSailing #OceanFreedom
'Kairos' is a 2006 Bavaria 39 listed exclusively for sale with YOTI on Pittwater. https://www.yoti.com.au/listing/bavaria-39-kairos This Bavaria 39 is a fantastic all-rounder that immediately feels solid, comfortable and easy to live with. Stepping aboard, you get that classic Bavaria warmth: bright timber finishes, an inviting saloon and a genuinely impressive sense of space. The popular three-cabin layout offers plenty of room for friends or family, with the flexibility to convert one cabin into a dedicated storage or workspace if preferred. Under sail, Kairos is set up for uncomplicated, enjoyable cruising with a fully battened slab reefed mainsail and a brand-new (2025) Rolly Tasker roller-furling genoa, plus an asymmetrical running gennakers with snuffer socks. Standing rigging was replaced in 2019. The single-wheel helm keeps everything simple and manageable. Bavaria’s robust push-rod steering system delivers a direct, positive helm feel with very little to go wrong – a design valued by cruisers for its strength and reliability. The cockpit is well protected by a 2020 dodger, bimini and side clears, complemented by cockpit cushions, good seating and excellent visibility forward. The Volvo D2-55 (approx. 1,800 hours) has been professionally and consistently serviced, including a full engine and saildrive service in October 2024. The saildrive is paired with a three-blade folding prop, and engine access is excellent from multiple sides. The fuel tank features an updated sender and gauge. Antifoul, Propspeed and a topsides polish were also completed in October 2024. Electronics include a B&G Zeus 2 chartplotter, Raymarine ST60 Tridata, B&G autopilot (2016), B&G VHF and AIS. The upgraded electrical system features a 200Ah lithium house battery, Bluetooth battery monitoring and a solar panel mounted on the bimini. Overall, Kairos feels like the ideal size for simple, enjoyable sailing – manageable for a couple yet comfortable for extended cruising. It’s the sort of yacht you can easily “jump on and go”, perfect for exploring Pittwater, weekends offshore or cruising up the East Coast. For those feeling more adventurous, the Bavaria 39 is CE Category A rated for offshore conditions and is well suited to international passagemaking. Well cared-for, clean and upgraded where it counts, she stands out as a smart, ready-to-sail 39-footer. Asking $524,995.00 This 2015 Beneteau Oceanis 60 Offshore Cruising Performance Sailboat is available now in Marina del Rey with a transferable slip if desired. She is fully equipped and ready for any adventure. For more information please contact Ian Van Tuyl the yacht specialist. Please feel free to contact me at any time day or night and I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully earning your business. 1-(619)-507-4416 ivtyachtsales@gmail.com http://www.ivtyachtsales.com The 2015 Beneteau Oceanis 60 is a comfortable and capable cruiser praised for its spacious and well-lit interior, large cockpit ideal for entertaining, and surprisingly good performance for a yacht of its size. It handles well both upwind and downwind, is manageable with a short-handed crew, and is responsive and stable in various sea conditions. Key features include a large aft sunbathing area, a prominent arch to clear the mainsheet, an accessible engine room via an electric opening hatch, and a luxury-focused interior with electric blinds and bar Performance and handling Sailing: The boat is considered fast for a cruiser, maintaining good speed on all points of sail. It handles well in a variety of wind conditions, with good tracking upwind and is particularly fast on a reach. Seas: It handled 4-6 foot seas well, remaining dry in both upwind and downwind conditions. Maneuvering: A large rudder under the hull makes it very responsive, even at low speeds. The standard bow thruster makes close-quarters handling easy, but be aware of the boat's size and need for sufficient room to pivot.
Let’s not sugarcoat it: some sailboats should’ve never been built. This is the list of the 10 WORST sailboats to buy—the floating disasters that will leave you broke, broken, or just plain stranded. We’re diving into the worst of the worst, exposing boats cursed by poor design, flimsy build quality, chronic rot, and awful sailing performance. We analyze why: The MacGregor 26X is the worst compromise between sail and power. The Irwin 38 and Hunter 37 Legend are famous for questionable structural integrity and rot. The Formosa 41 is built for show, not go, and the Bayliner Buccaneer 270 sails like a shed. Buying one of these "priced to sell" boats is the fastest way to turn your cruising dream into a maintenance nightmare. Was würdest du nächstes Mal anders machen?
