Over a period of two and a half weeks in March and April 26 I explored the Galápagos Islands from above and underwater. My stay included a trip with the M/Y Aqua through the archipelago where we did 18 dives on the most famous divespots of the islands. We mostly had pretty bad visibility and strong swell. Nevertheless we encountered dolphins, hammerheads, sunfishes and many more marine creatures. Above the water I visited different islands (e.g. Floreana, Santa Fe, Isabela, San Christobal) with astonishing snorkling and beautfiul landscapes. Day 16. The wind is not being forgiving today. We’ve been spending most of the time inside, getting thrown around, and I’m honestly a bit tired of being glued to this couch. 30 knots, straight upwind. Up the waves, into the waves… just constant bashing. At some point I realized we were heading too far north, so I decided to slow things down. No point in rushing something that doesn’t need to be rushed. Reefed the sails, and now is calmer. Much more controlled. Still rough, but manageable. And even with the waves hitting hard… I feel safe. Really safe. Which is kind of the most important part. Because if this is what it feels like now, it gives me a lot of confidence for what’s coming next. The GGR won’t be forgiving. But at least I know this boat can take care of me.
