Enough with this maintenance in Marsh Harbour! It’s time to get sailing and set our hopes on Hopetown. This was one of our favorite stops in the Abacos. Many cruisers live here full-time on a ball in the harbor which gives the place a very welcoming, community feel. There are lots of quirky little shops, beautiful flower-lined roads and bike paths, great restaurants and the stunning Hopetown Lighthouse, one of the oldest manual Kerosene-lit lighthouses in the world. Lots of pictures of Hopetown for you all in a fun blog post here -- https://havewindwilltravel.com/2018/06/23/bv17-marsh-harbour-to-hopetown/. Phillip and I were incredibly fortunate to score a ball in the harbor our VERY FIRST night there (some people have waited years for one) and we enjoyed a stunning three-day stay at Hopetown. Enjoy the snorkeling in Marsh Harbour and the sporty sail over to Hopetown, and stay tuned next time for a trip to Little Harbor, a little-known hurricane hole at the south end of the Abacos where we were welcomed by friends who had just built an amazing little bungalow there. Plenty more to come! If you’re more into boat projects, we got plenty going on currently at www.havewindwilltravel.com with our 2018 mini re-fit -- https://havewindwilltravel.com/2018/08/02/shipyard-project-1-reinforcing-our-rudder/. Gotta balance all this play with all kinds of work, but we love it all. Enjoy the posts!

Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

We're getting the backbone assembly up... but there is so much to do before we can actually put it all together. We go through all of that in this video, along with a quick run through of the backbone actually going up! We'll go over everything in detail throughout the next couple of videos though. Making finhead bolts, drilling and lining things up before we bolted it all together, etc. We're getting there! And it's so exciting! If you are interested in the limited edition backbone assembly shirts you can buy one here: {Sorry T-shirt campaign has ended} --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. How to rig a sailboat- New Head Stay replacement on Profurl Roller Furler - Trust a Rigger? Patrick Childress Sailing Tips presents how to Replace Headstay inside Roller Furler, and important information about Profurl Extrusions. Can you trust a rigger to do it right? We put on a new headstay and take apart a Profurl Roller furler drum and remove all of the Profurl extrusions, reassemble the mechanical end fitting and the whole roller furler unit, in the water, with the mast still standing! Replace sailboat rigging yourself with sailing videos like this one! Sailboat rigging Replacement is important! There are many sailboat rigging tips in this video by Patrick Childress Sailing! sailboat rigging replacement is a good diy skill to have before you ever leave on your Bluewater Sailing adventure! It was our fault...we had damaged the Profurl extrusions. We had trouble raising and lowering the headsail, and the luff of the headsail was being ripped to shreds. But could we trust the Rigger to take apart a Profurl drum, install a new head stay , inside of a Profurl Roller Furler unit, including the drum and extrusion/foil and properly re-rig the entire headstay, while the mast is still standing on our blue water sailboat? This became a DIY rigging project quickly. This video covers what we did wrong to cause the trouble, and what we did to fix it all, DIY, and since we dissassembled the entire roller furling unit and extrusions, we put in a new headstay re-using our Norseman terminals mechanical end fittings. MAN vs. MOTOR!! Who will prevail?! In this week's BONUS episode of sailboat living with SailAway, we present another "Maintenance Short". You may have seen last week's regular episode "Every Sailboat Needs a Friend" detailing the testing of our new dinghy and motor, which resulted in discovered issues with our 4 hp 2-stroke outboard. Eric digs into it this week to figure out what ails it and *hopefully* doctor her back to health. To quote Eric, "if it involves a boat, it won't be easy"...there were definitely bumps in the road. But as we mentioned last week, if you're sailing island to island (which is coming up VERY soon) you've gotta have a functioning dinghy WITH a motor. For more videos on maintenance, modifications, and upkeep check out our "Messing About On Boats" playlist! Be sure to SUBSCRIBE for WEEKLY CONTENT! Cheers!! Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** There comes a time when you're just ready to get away from boats for a while. And after a years worth of sailing, capped off by several weeks of projects, we had reached that point. In order to recharge our batteries, we left Starry Horizons on the hard and set out for a six week tour around Australia. To start things off, we flew down to Canberra to explore Australia's capital. We really enjoyed the city, though that may have been slightly influenced by the personalized tour we got of Parliament House, thanks to one of our awesome followers! Next we flew over to Adelaide where we went diving in search of leafy sea dragons, marveled at Adelaide Fringe and then set off on a road trip across South Australia towards Melbourne. We were headed towards the fabled Great Ocean Road, but were pleasantly surprised at all the things to see and do before we got there. Amy particularly enjoyed all the small seaside towns and let's just say I made sure we constantly kept moving, otherwise she might have never left! Thanks for watching! We've been making a lot of progress on our electric sailboat conversion. We cut out and removed the diesel tank which was fiberglassed in place by the factory. We also made some modifications buy cutting and grinding away some non-structural partitions on the quarter berth. With the diesel tank and the partitions gone, we prepped and painted what was left - a giant clean slate for us to rebuild to our liking. Our end goal for this boat is to be completely off the grid. Sure, going completely electric will be better for the environment, and that's a plus, but that's not the biggest reason we're doing this. We're doing this because we love simplicity, and an electric motor is the simplest and purest form of auxiliary propulsion for a sailboat in our minds. Getting rid of the need to fill diesel jerry cans, the need to constantly service and maintain the engine, and the need to constantly search for more propane for your stove, is the real reason. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that electric is better for everyone, because it's certainly not. But for us, going electric was a no-brainer. More information about our electric sailboat build coming shortly. Stay tuned! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. It's taken two years of prep before getting to the point of being able to start bolting things together but we are finally there! The stern assembly is up and the bow will be up by next week. In celebration of this moment, we are doing a limited run of commemorative t-shirts. These will only be available for the next 2 weeks and will not get printed again! We plan on doing revealing shirts for big milestones in the build. If you are interested in collecting the shirts as they come out here is the link to the first. {THE T-SHIRT CAMPAIGN HAS ENDED} --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. Seacocks working? No. Diesel leak sorted? No. Dodger finished? No. Now we're back on the hard. OH NO! Subscribe for more sailing videos: https://ftbyoutube.page.link/subscribe So Jamie checked the seacocks, right? Yeah, but one decided to fail while we were in the slip in the marina. Better than failing out at sea... Instead of replacing it in situ, we decided to replace five of them. The dodger is now ready for its canvas, but is the canvas man ready for our dodger? We have high hopes... And that diesel leak we were so happy about fixing returns to bite us in the... So it's haulout time again, but this time with no engine... Have any of you ever wondered this? “How do they change their oil when they’re sailing around the world?” I’ll be honest, when we were first boat-shopping, I wasn’t even entirely aware the boat had an engine, much less one that had oil that needed changing, or that we (Phillip and I) would be the folks to do it. I was so clueless in the beginning! I put together a detailed, informative video for you all here from our “Maintenance in Marsh Harbour” post (blog link here -- https://havewindwilltravel.com/2018/06/10/bv15-maintenance-in-marsh-harbour-how-we-change-the-oil-on-the-boat/) and some photos there showing you how we change the oil on our boat, as well as the primary fuel filter and zinc. I also included one way, in particular, how NOT to do change the oil on a boat. You’re welcome! Watch and learn and we’ll hope an oil spill on board never happens to you. “Better get some towels,” the captain said. *gulp* Enjoy the boat project video. We’ve got a ton of posts and write-ups on Facebook and the HaveWind blog right now covering our summer projects in the shipyard. Think rudder reinforcement and removing and realigning the quadrant. If you’re a boat project junkie, go check out the goods!

We removed our 2004 Westerbeke diesel in preparation to install an electric motor powered by marine-grade lithium batteries. Removing the diesel was a filthy job. We pretty much got covered in oil and diesel during the process. We're super excited for it to be OUT of the boat so we can get to cleaning and painting. Stay tuned! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ If you're interested in either the diesel engine or the propane stove you can shoot us an email here: svsomnium@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate.Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! As mentioned before I need somewhere to crash when I am in Norway and I need some wheels for transportation. The perfect solution would be a RV campervan, but I could not afford to buy one ready. You see, I had to wishes when buying a car. It should have automatic transmission and cruise control. That made Mercedes the most obvious choice. So I found a car, now convert it in 5 days DIY! That was all the time I had just then. Is it doable? And with what result? Please do give the video a thumbs up if you like it, comments are always welcome and don't forget to subscribe if you are new to my channel. Got tired of not seeing our speed while we were sailing, so we cleaned our transducer, while we were under way. You have to be fast so water doesn't fill the bilge. Watch.

Ever wondered who we really are? Well here we go! (at least a little bit of an insight...) Doug from SV Seeker has been kind enough to have interviewed us for his new video series, The Mind of a Boat Builder and has passed on the video for us to share here. We hope you enjoy! Thank you Doug! Acorn to Arabella Challenge coins: http://www.svseeker.com/wp/product/acorn_to_arabella_coin/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

We FINALLY have a canopy on the top of the entry door of our shipping container house!!! It took us a lot more time that we planned to be done, but in the end it looks exactly like we planned!! Of course nothing is perfect as it was the first time we worked with plyglass in our lives, but it’s perfect for its purpose: don’t have any rain on the entry door anymore. As usual: we are in love with it!! __________________________________________________ SUPPORT US ON PATREON: http://www.patreon.com/oddlifecrafting _______________________________________ Songs on this episode: Into the clouds-Nicolai Heidlas Enjoy - Joakim Karud Jazzy Frenchy - Bensound The show must go on - Kevin MacLeod Funky suspense - Bensound Hustle - Kevin MacLeod New places - Nicolai Heidlas Bengo Latino Sting - Jimmy Fontanez Doh de oh - Kevin MacLeod Fig leaf rag distressed - Kevin MacLeod African drums stings - Twin Musicom Extra hands: Fábio Karasiak - https://www.youtube.com/treinocorreto Drone footages: André Rothermel 20 of our favorite channels!! 1 Get Hands Dirty 2 Laura Kampf 3 Chris Salomone 4 Diycore com Karla Amadori 5 Gunflint Designs 6 HomeMadeModern 7 homesteadonomics 8 Life Uncontained 9 Living Big In A Tiny House 10 Modern Builds 11 Square Inch 12 SV Seeker 13 Woodbrew 14 Exploring Alternatives 15 Darbin Orvar 16 Finding Simon 17 Frantic Sailing Adventures 18 Unforgettable Sailing 19 Sailing Hunk of Junk 20 BoatworksToday #shippingcontainerhouse #tinyhouse

(Parts and sources listed below) I used to clean my boat bottom by holding my breath with a snorkel. It was a lot of work with constant interruption to come up for, air and my lung capacity is not what it used to be. I wanted the smallest and lightest possible 12v dive hookah. It needed to draw minimal current for one diver working at max 4-foot depth. Ready-made units were too big and expensive and designed for going deeper than I needed. There was one small unit on ebay for $440 but I was unsure of its quality, reliability, and size of components. I spent under $300 on parts. Warning: Diving at even shallow depths with compressed air can be dangerous. Please do not copy my system unless you have done your own research and take responsibility for your own choices. A diving course is recommended. Here is a list of the materials I used: 1. Pump: I used the ACQ-908 12 volt, 105 watt (9 amp), 150 L/Min, 0.12MPA which was just barely adequate for me and requires I control my breathing for this small compressor to keep up. It would be a safer choice to use the next size larger pump ACQ-910 - $89 at Amazon or several vendors at Alibaba: https://www.amazon.com/HEALiNK-Aquarium-Aquaculture-Pressure-Compressor/dp/B06XJ8P656/ref=sr_1_1 2. Air Breathing Hose 10mm x 20m - Non-toxic Scuba Hookah Diving Hose - ebay $44US plus $61 shipping from Australia. Gator Gill on Ebay now sells a 50-foot hose with the quick disconnect fittings for $105 plus shipping on Ebay. I might have saved $65 using less expensive 3/8" x 50' SHIELDS RUBBER Series 162 Polyester Reinforced Clear PVC Tubing - $42 and free shipping at Walmart online: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shields-Marine-Hose-Clear-Reinforced-Series-162-PVC-Tubing-with-Red-Tracer/55110209 3. Hanperal 145 PSI Explorer Scuba Diving Dive 2nd Stage Regulator Octopus Hookah - $24 at: https://www.amazon.com/Hanperal-Explorer-Diving-Regulator-Octopus/dp/B01AL6UN22/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Hanperal+145+PSI+Explorer+Scuba+Diving+Dive+2nd+Stage+Regulator+Octopus+Hookah&qid=1595765282&sr=8-1 (The regulator arrived with strong rubber smell so I kept the regulator and swapped out the hose for this 22-inch hose for $18 plus $7 shipping: https://www.divegearexpress.com/regulator-double-braided-flex-hose 4. Edge Industrial 3/8 X 1/4 Hose ID brass barb reducer splicer fitting - $8 at: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CS9NWL4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 5. Water and particle filter - $23 plus $7 shipping at ebay Gator Gill. Search ebay using "Hookah Diving Airline filter kit combo." 6. Hose disconnect fittings and clamps from Harborfreight.com - about $15 7. 12v 20 amp circuit breaker (or switch and fuse) - about $17 on Amazon but I had a used one on hand. 8. Scrap plywood, aluminum plate to mount switch, two #10 bolts, nuts and washers, #10 AWG wire, crimp connectors, and battery clips, clip to hold air hose to dive belt - about $25 Total about $320 but if I wanted to use the cheaper hose that would bring it under $300. I'm sure there is a more elegant way to connect the various hose fittings with quick disconnects but this is what I had at hand.

In this video I design and build a portable lifting hardstand for my RL28 trailer sailer. Based around 4 high lift jacks, it uses 2 x 3m "H" beams commonly used in landscape retaining walls for lifting beams. Stands provide a guide for these beams and stability for the boat. The system can lift to a maximum of 1.2m off the ground and can lower within 200mm of the ground. The beams have a failure load of 2200kg with weight at the centre when lifting at their ends giving more than 100% safety factor with a load of around 600 to 1000kg per beam. High lift jacks are rated to 3000kg with a load on each of 300 to 500kg giving a more than 300% safety factor. Old high tensile u bolts were used as movable safety pins during lifting and lowering in case of lifting mechanism failure. The stands stood rock solid with the 1400kg boat at 1.2m in the air during a 40 knot blow. At $1150 to build they cost a bit but paid for themselves during a 4 week maintenance on the boat with the convenience of not having to travel to a boat yard each day to work on the boat. Even though designed for the RL28, the system would be easily adaptable to many trailer sailers by using different hull support blocks to suit the hull shape.

***** Starry Horizons needed a bit of TLC so we headed up to The Boat Works in Coomera for a spa day/weeks. Tops on the to-do list was a mini electrical refit to replace our AGM batteries with Lithium. This was a complicated project that was beyond our comfort level so we brought in a few experts. Jack from Outback Marine supplied the lithium batteries, BMS, distribution control panel, Victron Solar Controllers and a more powerful Victron inverter/charger while Jim from Odyssey Electrical supplied new Balmar alternators and wired in the whole system. While the battery replacement work was going on, we managed to complete a few projects of our own. We pickled watermaker, re-sealed the windows in the hulls, troubleshooted a pesky water leak, serviced our davits, re-galvanized our anchor chain, repainted the anchor locker AND serviced the winches. Whew!! It makes me tired again just writing all that out! Once all that was completed, Starry Horizons got hauled out of the water so we could store her on the hard while we went and did a six week tour of Australia. Thanks for watching! When our family's offer was turned down on the project boat we wanted we never expected to be buying a bluewater boat the next week! The Morgan 462 was damaged in a hurricane and has sat for 9 months. She's definitely a project boat, but when we're done she'll take our family sailing around the world. She's sitting in a marina near Corpus Christi, TX and we will need to find a boat yard to haul her out in and start our DIY refit. There's lots we need to learn and we're grateful to channels like @SailingUma @ProjectAtticus and @LearningtheLines who have made great videos showing what's possible! We are a family preparing to sail around the world in our electric sailboat. Yes, we are starting to finally put her together. It's been a long time coming and we have many pieces ready, but we are steps away from bolting things together. That means, we need to drill holes and make sure the bow assembly fits perfectly together. Soon the bronze and copper show up and we're going to have to make bolts and lock everything in! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts.
