Well, just killed the budget as our engine repair went from $800 when we were just replacing the head, to $2,400 to replace the long block. We lost the $800, this was money that we used buying the new head and gasket, but you live and learn. At the end of this project, we will total up all the cost if you have the same project in mind. When we got the new head on we got low compression in cylinder 3 and 4 on our boat. While we may have been able to run the engine like this, it probably would have used a lot of oil. This would not have been good for the environment and wildlife in our lakes and oceans. This is probably why we found so much oil left under the seat in our Bayliner Bowrider from the previous owner. In this episode of SailMermaid I am doing some maintenance onboard. I am adding Usb sockets, 12v sockets and 220v sockets. I also make a few mistakes that leaves permanent marks on the boat. I also do a hatch replacement of the broken Lewmar deck hatch. The frame was still good so I only replaced the lid part with the window in it, but then I had to remove it from the new frame and fit it to the old frame Please do give the video a thumbs up if you like it, comments are always welcome and don't forget to subscribe if you are new to my channel. I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Ep 103 | Canals, Dunkirk and the White Cliffs of Dover, Wicked Van European Road Trip After discovering an amazing giant guillotine lock we find another smaller lock a little further along. We check out an interesting supermarket and buy ourselves a ‘supermarket lunch’ to eat at the next picnic spot. Then its onto Dunkirk and finally the white cliffs of Dover. We make a bolt for central London and say goodbye to our little home. It was a quick and lovely trip. We visited friends and found many of the places which we had been to previously, many years ago. Thanks for joining us on this blast through Europe. See you next time for the next adventure… Cheers! Sometimes, you just have to flip things on their heads to work on them. As we finished fairing our the ballast keel, we flipped it and the wood keel in order to be able to work on the underside. With everything upside down, we will then be able to work on the deadwood and drilling before we bolt them together. REMINDER: We will be at the Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat show the weekend of June 22nd to 24th. If you are in the area and would like to meet us while checking out a really great show, you would love to meet you there. Look for us under the main tent right next to Jamestown Distributors. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. In this vlog we "pull the stick" and remove the mast on our Endeavour 32 sailboat. After the crane lowers the mast, we move the 300 lb metal tube about 50 feet by ourselves to get it out of the way of our boat being moved into the paint tent. Before the mast goes up we're going to completely refit it with brand new standing rigging, wiring, lights, and instruments. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) spent a month in Martinique, which is a delightful slice of France, with a culture of its own, no mass tourism, and many stunning unspoiled anchorages. We had guests for 2 weeks (Teo, Geta & little Darius, 2 years old), and 2 weeks in Marina du Marin doing boat maintenance – there will be a separate video for the maintenance part. We anchored in Ste.Anne, Anse Mitan, Anse a l’Ane, Les Trois Ilets, Les Anses D’Arlet, and had several days of road trips around the island, visiting all the coasts, Habitation Clement, Chateau Dubuc, Rhum J.M, St.Pierre, etc. 16 Apr-14 May 2018
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) whilst in La Marin, Martinique, did quite a bit of maintenance. This video shows some aspects of how its "not all plain sailing" on a cruising yacht. Things need attention ALL the time! We serviced the Volvo Penta, the Reckmann Vang, fitted new Jabsco electric toilet, ran cleaning cycle on ENWA watermaker. 5-14 May 2018
s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) spent a week in Antigua, a brief stop just to see what's what. By the time we arrived, the season was pretty much over, very few yachts in the marinas and lots of the business already closed for the summer or about to close. Even so, we managed to squeeze some maintenance (sails repairs, sleeves for halyards, etc) and did a bit of tourism too. It is a very pretty island, dryer than the previous ones, beautiful beaches. We are looking forward to see it come to life in December, when we will be back there. 15-23 May 2018

Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Turns out, sailing fast is rather fun! Who knew??? After our friend Kyle left from New Caledonia it was time to get south for cyclone season so we set sail on the passage to Coffs Harbour, Australia. And it was an absolute blast! The wind was perfect, staying at about 15 knots AWS on a broad reach for the first several days. We experimented a bit with our headsail set up and found that moving our screecher over to the windward bow worked amazingly well. So well that we had two 200nm days in a row! Without touching the sails! It doesn't get much better than that! Going so fast, we managed to make it out of the cyclone zone in plenty of time and arrived into Coffs Harbour before a cold front that had been working it's way north up the coast. It was the perfect way to wrap up our time in the South Pacific. In this episode, Crushing Boat Bottom, we clean the topsides, haul out of the water for the first time, go up on the hard, scrape, sand, and paint the bottom, wash, wax, etc. then re-launch for the summer! If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

We leave Trento and head further up into the snow. Again, we find places that we had forgotten about and this brings back memories of when we used to live in Italy, when the children were little. A very nostalgic trip. We pass through countries and find a fabulous massive guillotine lock along the way. We hope you enjoy traveling along with us on our delivery run road trip through Europe, from Rome to London. Thanks for watching. Cheers! After 3 years of sailing on Starry Horizons, the time had come to replace our old AGM battery bank with something new. We were ready for Lithium. ****** Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Doing the swap over required almost a complete re-work of our 12v electrical system in order to do things properly. We installed a 720Ah 12v LiFePO4 house bank with a BMS and Distribution Control Board, upgraded to a 3,000W/120A Inverter Charger, swapped out MPPT Solar Controllers AND the alternators on our engines. This was a serious project but we wanted to make sure we did it right. There are some issues around Lithium Battery banks that need to be addressed and in this video we talk about how we came up with a set-up we're comfortable with as we sail around the world. Plus I'll touch on some of the lessons learned through the whole process. I think sanding Boat Bilge and Stringers is the most uncomfortable part of the restore of this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175. We don't think that the new floor will leak water, but if it does we don't want the stringers to rot. Fiberglass is amazing, but installing it has to be the hardest part of this boat restore. I would not wish this part of the project to anyone! The protection you have to wear is so hot, but if not worn during this boat restore the fiberglass is very itchy and not really good for your lungs. Our next boat project I don't think I want to do a floor again but it is great that I have done it. Really nice to know how to prepare and lay up fiberglass for a boat project. The different kinds of fiberglass and resins you can use and what works best. Follow along as we breath new life into this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider. Blog Post: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/sanding-bilge-boat-restoration/ Tools Used: These are all the tools I used while sanding. It was very hot while doing this part of the project, but I would not have done it without the protective gear. Fiberglass in bad for the lungs and will make you itch like crazy. It's time to replace the 38 year old standing rigging on our Endeavour 32 sailboat. In this video, I replace the 4 lower shrouds. Those are the wires that run from deck-level, up to the height of the spreaders. Ever since buying this sailboat, I've had thoughts of replacing the standing rigging. The decision was made for me when some of the wires were damaged during hurricane Irma. This will be the biggest project we've tackled yet, and we'll be doing all of the work ourselves. This is one expensive piece of lumber! We wanted to make sure that we accurately cut the keel timber to shape so our initial cut was only getting us close to the final shape, so that we could see whether it warped/checked/shrank etc. afterwards. Now that we are close to mating the two keels together, we get the wood keel to it's final shape except for the fairing from the rabbet down. This fairing will be done after the rabbet is cut, the deadwood is shaped and the two keels are ready to be bolted together. Which is soon! Thank you for watching and following this amazing journey we are on! If you would like to meet us in person, we will have a booth right next to Jamestown Distributors at the 2018 Wooden Boat Show at Mystic Seaport from June 22nd to June 24th. We hope to see you there! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. We had a week up our sleeves before we had to fly back to Australia to work, so Magnus did a bit of sleuthing and found another dollar a day deal on a hire car. So, after a wonderful experience traversing America on the Route 66 Mother Road, we leave Los Angeles and head to London for a transfer to our flight to Rome. After trains, planes and automobiles, we pick up our Wicked Van and begin the journey north to Trento, up in the mountains. This episode is a trip down memory lane. We stop off at old haunts and finally end up in Baselga di Piné in Trento. A great start to a quick blast through Europe. We hope you enjoy traveling along with us on our delivery run road trip through Europe, from Rome to London. Thanks for watching. Cheers! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! ***** Our friend Kyle visits for round 2 in the South Pacific, this time to go sailing in New Caledonia's Southern Lagoon. We'd made our way back to the main city of Noumea in order to pick him up and once he arrived, we immediately set sail out to the Amedee Lighthouse. Swimming with turtles was high on the to-do list and Amedee didn't disappoint! The next day, on our 60nm sail down to the Isle of Pines, Kyle proved to be an excellent good luck charm as we reeled in two massive Yellowfin Tuna. And that was only the start of our adventures on the Isle of Pines. We hiked Pic N'ga twice, once because we wanted to and the second thanks to a tsunami warning and a host of cruise ship passengers streaming up the trail. (Spoiler alert! Everything ended up being fine) One day was spent on a tour out to the Nokanhui Atoll for some frisbee on the beach and delicious lobster. Another took us out to the Natural Swimming Pools for a crystal clear water snorkel surrounded by pine trees. And finally, we made our way over to the stunning Gadji Bay. Dropping the anchor in 2.5m/8ft of white sand with water so clear you can see the tracks from the anchor chain is just magical. Of course the nearby beach was calling out to us so we went ashore to explore and husk some coconuts. Rather quickly, we discovered that we had no idea what we're doing. All too soon, our time with Kyle came to an end, but it was so awesome to have him come out in visit. I'm not sure it's possible to have a better week sailing around New Caledonia! Thanks for watching! We go over what we think this boat restore will cost and what we have spent so far. The Mercurice 3.0 engine only needs a cylinder head to fix the issue. The rest of the thing in the project to restore this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175, though cheaper, will nickel and dime your wallet. Well, things are starting to come together, we have most everything we need and is coming in for what we think is budget-friendly. We have ordered all our fiberglass needs at http://www.totalboat.com/ at what seemed to be a good market price and very easy to use for two newbies to fiberglass. We so far have sourced all our engine needs for the Mercruiser 3.0 from http://www.marineengine.com, the staff there are very friendly and knowledgeable. We got a brand new head for the engine from www.cylinder-heads.com, the price was cheaper than I could get the head rebuilt and it was new. In the video, there is a list of all the parts we got with the price we paid.
