My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. Tops on the to-do list was a mini electrical refit to replace our AGM batteries with Lithium. This was a complicated project that was beyond our comfort level so we brought in a few experts. Jack from Outback Marine supplied the lithium batteries, BMS, distribution control panel, Victron Solar Controllers and a more powerful Victron inverter/charger while Jim from Odyssey Electrical supplied new Balmar alternators and wired in the whole system. While the battery replacement work was going on, we managed to complete a few projects of our own. We pickled watermaker, re-sealed the windows in the hulls, troubleshooted a pesky water leak, serviced our davits, re-galvanized our anchor chain, repainted the anchor locker AND serviced the winches. Whew!! It makes me tired again just writing all that out! Once all that was completed, Starry Horizons got hauled out of the water so we could store her on the hard while we went and did a six week tour of Australia. Thanks for watching! When our family's offer was turned down on the project boat we wanted we never expected to be buying a bluewater boat the next week! The Morgan 462 was damaged in a hurricane and has sat for 9 months. She's definitely a project boat, but when we're done she'll take our family sailing around the world. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. After recovering from our trip at the World’s best crêperie in Sainte Marine, we tackle maintenance projects and repairs. As the 35th hull number in the series, NaviGator benefits from all of the major improvements developed over the first few years of production including the following and more; 24V electrical, full size watch berth in the pilothouse, opening hatch in the master stateroom; and the best equipment selections such as a Steelhead crane, Lugger wing engine and ABT TRAC active fin stabilizers - all important additions that simply were not available on earlier hulls. NaviGator has a fantastic layout for an active owner operator couple. Her size is large enough for generous accommodations, but also appropriate for boat handling and managing maintenance. A fishing trap lost a fight with one of our rope cutters and a ton of marine growth on one of our props caused us to make a quick detour in order to do some cleaning. And to top it off, the notoriously treacherous Southport Seaway was waiting for us at the end. This week, we are in Cherbourg and take the opportunity to visit the biggest nuclear submarine in the world open to the public. Although the submarine was very spacious, we didn't believe cruising the world in it would be so cozy, and the maintenance cost probably off the roof. We were in France right when France won the World Cup, and explore the streets of Cherbourg that night, and take part in the giant party going on in the streets of the city. We didn't stay long, as we had to leave the Cherbourg for Quimper, my hometown, the next day. We had a smooth motorsail and some wonderful views over the channel islands of Guernsey and Sark. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
