Boats break, things go wrong, equipment stops working, thats the nature of the beast. The sea is a harsh environment and keeping up with repairs and maintenance can be a ball breaker! In this episode Im fixing stuff and eating a giant Pizza! #sailing #sailingblog Thank you for watching this episode, please give us a thumbs up and subscribe. On Facebook our page is ‘Adventures of an old Seadog’ and there you can find ‘realtime’ up-dates and news. Facebook https://www.facebook.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ If you’d like to help the Old Seadog Please checkout our Patreon page on the link below. https://www.patreon.com/Adventuresofanoldseadog Contributions to the project can be made at paypal.me/seadogadventures Instagram https://www.instagram.com/adventuresofanoldseadog/ Twitter https://twitter.com/barryperrins Thanks so much for your support, The adventure continues. Safe sailing. Boat: White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built. The camera gear: Main camera is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached. Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v. Underwater video Gopro3plus. Editing: Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff! There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access. Content: I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘blar bar mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining. Comments and being at sea: I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World. As the haul-out travel lift came lumbering towards us, it was a lesson in hope, guts and teamwork. Subscribe for more sailing videos: https://ftbyoutube.page.link/subscribe The rain and wind howled round the yard, swinging our shiny dodger from the haul-out crane a little more than anyone liked, while Millie and Liz hid below listening to seven men shouting in two languages outside. After some detective work and a chat with Oyster, we discovered that the material used for our log bearing was Tufnol®. We've discovered it will be easier to source/replace using Torlon®, which we'll make to size here in the marina. The stainless team got to work on the davits, adding a frame for the new solar panel waiting for us in Pangkor. They are strengthening the original system in preparation for the foul conditions we are likely to encounter during the forthcoming easterly ocean crossing. ❤️ Fancy spreading some love? Happy Fourth of July! In this vlog we do a lot of prep work right up until we put the first couple layers of primer on our sailboat deck. With regards to the core in the questionable large area. It really did feel very dry, and when we compared the core from the questionable area to the mush that came out of the cockpit sole, that was our comparative analysis. At the time we felt this was enough and since we didn't have a moisture meter on hand we felt fine using our eyes and hands to determine the moisture level instead of relying on a device that may give us a number we don't know what to do with. After reading the comments on our last video, however, we decided to order a cheap moisture meter so we can get an idea of wetter areas of the deck and keep track of them as we cruise. We haven't gotten a chance to use it yet though. In a perfect world we would have had an unlimited amount of time in the shed for us to be able to re-core the whole deck, however that was simply not the case. We only had to the end of the month so we had to get moving. Since the core seemed dry everywhere except the cockpit sole, we decided to close up the inspection squares and paint. Going forward, we are planning on fixing the flex in the deck by glassing stringers on the underside from down below. This won't be hard as we're gutting the interior anyway. We're going to tie in the stringers into our design for the new headliner, and they will serve multiple purposes. The stringers will be a base for the headliner to be mounted to as well as adding structural integrity to the deck. If we find any really wet areas of the deck after we check the whole deck with the moisture meter, we will look into ways of fixing it from below so we don't mess up our new paint job on top. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

In this video, I fix the last big hole in the cockpit using fiberglass and west system epoxy. I've also found a different type of cleat that I think might be a winner. Last and also kind of least I give an update on the moisture levels in the hull. Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** It's always nice to get a speed boost when on a passage and the East Australian Current is about as big as they get. Sailing down from Coffs Harbour to Sydney, we went out to the 100 meter depth line and started flying. The wind was from the north and we had a wide window to arrive in Sydney during daylight, so we took it easy and just sailed using our screecher at first and then our genoa when the winds picked up. Going so fast, the passage was a short one, but we still had a few things to keep us occupied. Some friendly dolphins stopped by for a visit and we were sailing during the Geminid Meteor Shower during a night of clear skies. There's just something absolutely magical about sailing under a sky full of infinite stars. Oh, and we were definitely keeping an eye out for Nemo, Marlin, Dory and Crush, but were quite disappointed that none of them made an appearance. :( Thanks for watching! For two months, I helped a family with their Bed & Breakfast operation on Isla Tenglo, off the coast of Puerto Montt, Chile. I skippered a water taxi (small boat with outboard engine) and ferried guests between the mainland and the island. I also helped with general maintenance and yard work around the "Casa Roja" B&B

With the ballast keel poured, faired and painted, it is now time to start building out fore and aft of it. Due to the naturally dense aspect of the ballast keel requiring such a condensed shape, deadwood pieces are necessary to fair it out into the wood keel so as to have a flowing bottom. In this video we start working on the fore deadwood and finally start seeing some glimmer of a real shape to Arabella! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Since leaving California in April 2018, we have been really exercising all of the systems on our Nordhavn 40 offshore passagemaker and had to perform a bunch of routine maintenance and repair tasks while spending some time tied to the dock in Juneau, Alaska May be boring if you aren't into watching a bunch of stuff getting fixed!! We show routine oil changes to our Lugger (marinized John Deere) main engine and Norther Lights Generator, repairs to our Espar hydronic heating system, a repair to the exhaust system on our Yanmar wing engine, and maintenance on our Spectra watermaker. Please subscribe to follow along on our travels and adventures. You can read more on our blog: www.mvcassidy.com

After delivery the Wicked Van safely back to London, we fly back to Australia for the last few motorcycle tours before our motorcycle adventure tour business is sold. We are both on the last trip across Australia and here we share some of the moments from that trip with you. We leave Airlie Beach and head onto the first roads for the start of a 5600km ride across the vast Australian continent. There are a few mishaps along the way, but the worst of all is the loss of the 350gm steaks! We camp track side at the Finke Desert Race 2018! We hope you enjoy following along with us. Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. We go over why the new head didn't work on our engine, now going to do a full rebuild on our boat engine. Keep on digging and find more things that need to be replaced or repaired on this 2004 Bayliner Bowrider 175. For this boat we would really love not to spend over $5,000, our max budget is $10,000. Once back from the shop the fun will begin, we are in no rush to get this boat on the water, our goal is to learn how to boat. In our future, we plan to get a sailboat to travel around the Florida coast and other destinations not named. This boat will also offer water navigation experience, we both want to have our six pack captain's license in our quest for bigger dreams.

In this vlog our sailboat gets moved under the tent and we finish up removing everything prior to painting the deck. We also remove the top skin of fiberglass on deck in six spots to test for moisture in the core. Only one area was questionable. In this episode, Breaking Her In: Our First Sail of the Season, We rock the swimwear, put up the sails then leave on a 2 day 60 Nautical Mile journey from Halifax to Sambro rounding Chebucto Head reaching 10 to 15 foot ocean swells, becoming sea sick, and putting into a mooring for the night. The next day we retrace our steps with an amazing and beautiful downwind sail in calm waters and a safe return. The diver who paid us a visit was the Sambro Port Authority doing routine checks of all the moorings in the area. If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate.Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! In the last blog we left Woody to look after the boat in the Aegina and get on with maintenance work while we returned to England for a few weeks. It's great the kids are curious and want to learn about maintenance work on the boat, but obviously it slows things down a bit. So with the family out of the way Woody was able to work his way through the jobs list (we had a massive list to get through before we continued on from Aegina!) Before we left the UK he bought a load of cordless tools from Powertoolworld - a grinder, jigsaw, and drill so he's able to save so much money making and repairing things on the boat. We got the generator sorted out when we arrived but there was still the engine to paint, bilge pipes and strum boxes to sort out and the pre-filter of the water maker to rebuild. The grey water tank in the Amel is quite unique in that it's housed in the keel and all waste water drains into this bilge 'tank' so it's an important part of the boat to keep clean and maintain properly, so both automatic and manual bilge pipes were replaced. The pre filter for the watermaker was quite corroded and although we'd ordered most parts from the UK we still had to source bits locally on Aegina (which was easier said than done with strikes and strange opening hours!). Woody used to make industrial style furniture in the UK: https://www.ratandpallet.com/ so luckily he was used to working with pipes and fittings. We still haven't got around to fully servicing in the watermaker yet but that'll be on the next job list. We'd noticed that the kids really enjoy watching the dolphins and other wildlife from the bow of the boat and occasionally enjoy the personal space there. But at the moment we've just got a pulpit framework to sit on, so Woody set too and designed and made a cool bow seat for the front of the boat too. Mooring in the Mediterranean - particularly Greece - is mainly stern to parking, which means dropping an anchor three to five boat lengths out, reversing into the quayside and attaching stern lines to the dock. It sounds easy enough but crosswinds, prop walk and crossed anchors (and lack of experience) can turn it into an entertaining spectacle. When Woody and I were flotilla skippers in Greece we used to raft up all the time, which is fine as long as you've got everybody's consent and someone to coordinate it. But when boats just turn up and decide they're going to raft up without anybody's consent and no coordination, then it leads to a whole new level of chaos, as Woody experienced when Ukrainian business flotilla turned up and literally gave him sleepless nights! Two weeks went by quickly and Woody headed to Athens to meet us off the plane. Fortunately we have friends in Athens - Aurie and Mariela - who let us crash in their Athens apartment which meant we had time to visit the Parthenon! The Acropolis Museum is build on top the ruins of ancient Athens and is a great place to visit. However, the Acropolis and especially the Parthenon was very busy, like a lot of honey pot tourist attractions in Greece. We took pictures of #legoericka - a lego toy we were given by our author friend Ericka Waller to take around the world and visit all the places she can't because of her auto-immune disorder. Our daughter gave us a Greek mythology lesson about the foundation of Athens and Athena while our youngest regretted it wasn't named after his favourite Greek god - Poseidon. After visiting the Parthenon we headed back to Aegina but there's always drama in our life and on this occasion a woman was rescued by our ferry in the middle of the sea! You can see the full footage from this incident on the link: https://youtu.be/PTOZrIogdhs Back in Aegina the kids earned money for their ice-cream budget by busking which was a win-win, as it meant they put in lots of music practice too! After reinstalling our VHF and AIS transceiver following an MMSI update we paid our fees and did a final shop. Our youngest was particularly keen to stock up on strawberries and cherries so we bought some from a local fruit and veg boat, cleaned the bugs off them and raised our new British ensign. Finally it was ready to throw off the lines and leave the dock once again - heading for Poros and the Cyclades Islands.

Join us as we continue our refit and take a day trip to London, where you should always expect the unexpected... 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ In this video we show you our list of the top 10 priority jobs on the boat, do some electrical work, plumbing and visit a temple! We decided to take a day off from our DIY sailboat refit to take a day trip so that Rossella could celebrate her birthday by the three of us seeing her sister, brother in-law and nephews, who were visiting London from Italy. A brilliant day was had by all and, as we met each other in London (on a random night out in 2005) it is a city which will always be close to our hearts. Taking our first trip there with Emma was very special! ⛵ Sailing Britaly ⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British), Rossella (Italian), and baby Emma (Britalian) as we sail our 1992 Bavaria 350. We make sailing vlogs of our cruising adventures and share any tips and tricks we can along the way. After all, sailors are one big family! The engines out, the Stern Drive off, and the engine is ready to be shipped to the machine shop Xcessive Engines for a rebuild. It should only take about 2 weeks to get the engine back, and if Xcessive Engines has engines in stock they ship out right away. I guess it being summer their inventory is a bit low, but we think we have a good core to build off of, plus it comes with a two-year warranty. Update on JB Automotive, the shop closed its doors because of poor workmanship and management. Josh was a good guy to talk with, not so much to send mechanic work to. What I should have done here, what my wife said, is to build an AFrame to pull the Mercruiser 3.0 out of the Bayliner Bowrider. We would not have had so many parts lost later in this boat project. ***** This year, we chose to sail down to Australia in order to escape the South Pacific cyclone zone. And our first port of call was the beautiful Coffs Harbour. We'd arrived just before a big front rolled through that brought southerly winds, so we ended up staying for longer than anticipated. Fortunately, Coffs ended up being well worth a longer look. We got to do some hiking on an island where migratory birds were nesting, visited the market and rented a car for a day to get a bit further out of town. On this day trip, we saw our first large Australian road side attraction: The Big Banana. Note, I said FIRST... There are several here in this crazy country! Oh, and we saw our first wild kangaroos... on a beach! I don't think it gets much more Australian than that! Thanks for watching! (Footage from December 2017) If you want current updates on where we are and what we're doing make sure to check out our blog and Facebook page: Blog: www.outchasingstars.com FB: www.facebook.com/outchasingstars/ Our Gear: Lots of people have been messaging us, asking about the gear we have on board Starry Horizons and what we use to film. In this vlog we pull stanchions, pull the bow pulpit, and sand the deck in preparation for being under the cover in the boatyard. Once we're under the cover we'll begin removing everything else and taking core samples from various locations in the deck to make sure it's not wet. We'll spend 3 weeks under the cover and that should be more than enough time for us to paint the deck and install the new portlights before we have to be back out in the elements. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.
