Our first DIY project on "Cuddles". Old portlights were faded and were installed in place with screws and regular caulking. Old caulking dried out and portlights started a slow leak. When removing old portlights I found out that the old screws were not holding the acrylic in place very well and were really loose. After researching online and asking around, we decided to go with 3M VHB double face tape to install new portlights in place. This is the same tape that used in window installation on commercial buildings. Very tough tape, plus no issues with different rates of expansion between acrylic and fiberglass like the screw in application. Usually with screw in application, we would have to drill bigger holes in the acrylic portlights so the don't crack due to the expansion. Because of that, there are higher chances for a leak vs 3M VHB tape route. Also, after extensive research, went with DOW Corning 795 Silicone which is the only silicone recommended for any kind of glazing, window, portlights sealing. It doesn't dry out as fast as other silicone products, so you can take your time working with it and taping the area off. New portlights were made out of 1/4" thick cell cast acrylic. grey color. Originally was planning on ordering 4x8 sheets and then cutting it, but acrylic was inexpensive enough that I had local plastic shop cut them into correct shapes and sizes. Cost came out around $50-$60 per portlight with radius corners and radius edges. Products used: 3M 5952 VHB tape, you can find it all over the place but this was the fastest shipping for me : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BU7038A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 DOW Corning 795 black silicone, I ended up getting it from local plastic shop, since everywhere else it was taking 2.5 weeks to get it. Price difference was only about a dollar a tube. Ended up using about a quarter of tube per portlight. 1/4" Cell Cast Acrylic grey sheet material. Ended up getting it from local plastic shop, seems like most plastic shops stock it for window or boat applications. Also available in thicker 3/8" but most shops I checked didn't stock it and I had to wait about 3 weeks. You can always try this supplier that was recommended to me: https://www.estreetplastics.com/Plexiglass-Grey-Smoked-3-8x24x48-p/t803752448.htm Goof Off from Local Lowes for clean up and caulking removal. Acetone for cleaning before applying 3M tape. Detail sander to remove existing caulking vs scraping by hand, a lot quicker. Sailboat: 1984 Freedom 32

How to get rid of lovebugs, a vacuum cleaner seems to work very well. Use fans to keep the air moving, they don't seem to fly very well. Lemon juice seems to detour them, but it doesn't last very long. Poison doesn't seem to work, they die when they land on it, but there's just so many of them they still land all over you. Things that work for mosquitoes do not work for lovebugs. You also want to keep your grass cut short, they breed in the damp soil underneath the grass. Need an explanation of bent frame construction? Here's the first part. We've been working fast now and after assembling the backbone, it was time to install the molds. Which proved to be a bit more challenging than expected in our boathouse. We will be steaming most of the frames in this weekend (september 22nd and 23rd 2018). Feel free to stop by and watch if you are in the area! These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. We install our new Battleborn LifePo4 batteries for our electric sailboat build in this vlog. We also make progress on the battery box and galley refit. Our end goal for this boat is to be completely off the grid. Sure, going completely electric will be better for the environment, and that's a plus, but that's not the biggest reason we're doing this. We're doing this because we love simplicity, and an electric motor is the simplest and purest form of auxiliary propulsion for a sailboat in our minds. Getting rid of the need to fill diesel jerry cans, the need to constantly service and maintain the engine, and the need to constantly search for more propane for your stove, is the real reason. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that electric is better for everyone, because it's certainly not. But for us, going electric was a no-brainer. More information about our electric sailboat build coming shortly. Stay tuned! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Link for the Battleborn batteries: http://battlebornbatteries.com?afmc=ltl_01 Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ If you're interested in either the diesel engine or the propane stove you can shoot us an email here: svsomnium@gmail.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. This 55 Expedition Motorsailer is a no nonsense” design by Ted Hood and built as his last “ROBIN.” She is a world cruiser that has the speed and range capability of a motorsailer, combined with the sailing characteristics of any other of Ted Hood-designed performance bluewater sailboat. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, she is luxurious and comfortable below decks, while on deck she is “all business” with a protected pilothouse and low-maintenance exterior ready to take on the elements. ROBIN is easily handled by one competent sailor, with remotes for all her electric furlers and five electric winches.

I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

In this video, 10 Days in Paradise, Part 2: INJURED at Sea, we leave Rogues Roost behind and absolutely careen into the deep waters of the North Atlantic reaching 8 knots to windward (Woohoo!!) and arrive safe and sound at Troop Island just inside St. Margaret's Bay where we drop the hook for the night. The next day we explore Troop Island where we have our own private beach paradise, then we set sail again for the next leg or our journey into Mahone Bay! If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate.Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! We are sooo excited with the result we got! We are actually even more excited because now we are ready to install the ceiling panels, the electric conduits, the walls so we can finally start building our tiny shipping container house furniture!! __________________________________________________ WANT MORE? http://www.patreon.com/oddlifecrafting (Become a patron to get early access to our videos, instant access to behind the scenes, extra pictures, perks, and even more) _______________________________________ #shippingcontainerhouse #tinyhouse #DIY

Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you?

Full Equipment List: https://sailingnahoa.com/posts/systems-and-components-of-an-offshore-sailing-catamaran After three and a half years of sailing around the world and well over 10000 nautical miles we wanted to give you a tour of our floating home as it is now. Nahoa is a 2005 Lagoon 410 owner’s version that has carried us all this way. We have worked hard over these last years to set her up for long term offshore cruising. While there is always a project list and a wish list (new high output alternators, spinnaker, new Genoa), we are very happy with our current setup and wanted to share it with you. Our longest video to date includes a high level view of our main power, navigation and safety systems that enable us to live life off the grid. Don’t worry you also get a detailed tour of the inside of our boat and the comforts that keep us happily sailing around the world! Nahoa has had a huge remodel since we purchased her in 2015. We have done 2 refits to get her setup for comfort and to solve our power requirements. If you want to check out the before of Nahoa you can watch our first walkthrough video here: https://youtu.be/T6F1YvTLPJw Notice all the beautiful green has been replaced? Well that isn’t all! Below we have a list of some of the main components we have added or replaced. This list does not include basic maintenance items since those are essentially relentless. It does however cover some of the bigger items which were replaced as they broke and wore out. We have found that in the last year, as the boat turned 12-13 years old, we have had to replace more of the remaining systems. Also the previous owner had replaced standing rigging and so that is something we have not had to yet tackle, but it will come up again soon! So without further rambling, if you are curious please check the exhaustive list below and I hope you enjoy the tour.

We took a break from the motor compartment stuff to work on our galley refit. This video outlines all the prep work we've been doing prior to installing our solid surface counter tops and new galley sink and faucet. The goal is to have a functional and clean-looking galley that is up to date with modern fixtures and appliances, but nothing to complicated. Simpler is always better so we're only going to have a fridge/freezer, microwave, sink, and gimbaled induction cooktop. We feel we can cook just about anything with those things, and use zero fossil fuels while doing so. We're going to do LG Solid surface counters in concrete grey along with blue/green peel-and-stick tiles for the backsplash. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines/ Check out Sailing Uma if you haven't already. This was a hard decision to make. We had been looking all over Newfoundland island and with a limited selection of sailboats we just couldn't find one. So we decided to start minimizing our lifestyle and either give or sell most of our belongings. Can you believe everything we own fits in a car? It was time to leave Newfoundland and start traveling to mainland Canada. After an 8-hour ferry crossing and another 15-hour drive we were back in our home province Quebec. The perfect area to start looking for our sailboat. #roadtrip #WildlyIntrepid #minimizing Want to know how we did it? So we found a travel trailer for our son to get started in life without paying an exorbitant amount of rent while on his Air Force TTY. This will also serve as a perfect home while he is off TTY, rent in travel trailer sites is cheap, really keeps his cost of living very low. Well, here's a few weeks of work compacted into a 18min video. We really want to focus on quality over quantity with our videos. Meaning, less fluff and more impactful - move the needle forward types of content. This is totally against conventional YouTube creator wisdom (produce at least weekly episodes where not too much really happens) but making videos that we can be truly proud of is what we want to do. We are stoked to share more about our updated cruising plans, more specifics on the projects we have planned and the history of our new boat in the coming episodes! 1st EVER AC Crew Live Chat: https://www.patreon.com/abandoncomfort Follow us on Instagram: http://bit.ly/2pMPpxf Like us on Facebook: http://bit.ly/2pLGd9M Looking for some AC gear? https://www.abandoncomfort.com/gear **Want to support us without costing you anything?** USE THIS LINK EVERY TIME YOU SHOP ON AMAZON - http://amzn.to/2wl9mfz --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Bookmark It!) In this episode of Sailing Chelsea, we leave Alderney and sail to Guernsey, where we explore some of the stunning coast line and old military bases. After a few days and a few maintenance jobs later, we leave the Channel Islands and sail over to Northern France. We make it into the river Lezardrieux just before we lose daylight, but it's a tricky mooring, with 5 knots of current! We explore Lezardrieux and bounce around the French coast, stopping at lots of rural towns along the way. The backbone is bolted together! We finally have some timbers bolted together and what a great feeling. It has been a long journey up to this point, with a lot more to come, but we can finally start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming together. We had to make our own fin head bolts which was quite the learning experience. This project is all about finding different ways around tough situations. We needed a good way to bolt the stem together with a bolt that had a low profile head. As buying them was a bit more expensive than we liked, we figured we could figure out how to make our own. Now that the backbone in together, we are working on setting up the molds and the rib bands to be ready to steam in the frames. That day is coming right up. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. We will be working all day and invite you to come by and watch the frames go in. This won't be our typical open house with food but rather an opportunity to come and watch an interesting part of the build in person. Check out our website or facebook for more information. Standard brass fittings installed by some manufacturers, or added by owners, are subject to dezincification and can fail catastrophically. This can sink a boat very quickly. https://youtu.be/lGxisXPIxqw The #1 Reason that Boats Sink Bronze seacocks are not immune to problems as some models have standard brass valve stems, which can suffer from dezincification and then fail, rendering the valve inoperable. The Boat Life http://bit.ly/HelpFundMoreVideos or buy yourself a shirt http://www.TheBoat.Life/shop Poutine is a part of Canadian culture. As a farewell to our friends and Canada we end our Canadian experience with home made Poutine. This was a DIY poutine experiment. We used Manitoba's award winning cheese curds, Squeakers. They were delicious! It is hard not to be with gravy cheese curds and french fries. Bam! like Emeril Lagasse up in here! It has been a wonderful time visiting our neighbors to the North. learning about there history and culture and boating on a fresh water lake. Lake of the Woods. Thanks you to our friends for hosting us as we travel. We will head back south to our sailboat soon. We now feel half Canadian for sure. This is The Boat Life. Nic Morganti and Melissa Auman are moving onto a sailboat. The plan was sell everything, buy a boat, live on a boat, and travel and explore the Caribbean and the world while living aboard! The uniform is boardshorts and bikinis. Simple plan, but lots to learn and do along the way. Join our adventure as we sail away on sv Dodi, our Island Packet IP27, live on a sailboat, and explore life aboard.

In this video, 10 Days in Paradise, Part 1: Adrift in FOG, this part one of our 10 days in paradise series we depart on our journey to secluded destinations along the amazing and beautiful South Coast of Nova Scotia. In this video we bring along guests and head out to sea in thick dangerous fog. We catch our supper, then land in Prospect cove to drop off our guests before heading to the famous Rogues Roost for to anchor out for the night. The next day we go for a tour of Rogues Roost by Dinghy using our new electric outboard motor and battery. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. This time we travel across the island of Newfoundland to go check out some sailboats in and around St. John's, CBS and Holyrood. But there's some disappointments ahead in the sailboat shopping journey. After looking at a few sailboats we fall in love, which I know we shouldn't have.
