When you live in a sailboat you want to make it feel like home. Which is why we attack some of the old and dusty sailboat cabin cushions and install a new portlight in the galley. Plus work on a few other boat projects. #sailing #boatcushion #wildlyintrepid #portlight Want to know how we did it? In this episode, we take a closer inspection of what could have caused the potential overheating issue encountered off the cost of Mexico. We learn a few new things about our fresh water cooled Yanmar 2GM20F and take care of a couple of maintenance items. Also, something is amiss with the prop..... Problem solved?

We continued building the wardrobe for the bedroom of our Shipping Container House!! This week we built the top part of our plywood wardrobe! It was easier to build than the first part, as we already had some skills to build this. We’re leaving the Snow for the Sun! On a Sailboat! Have you ever imagined yourself throwing caution to the wind and setting out on an adventure?? Well that's what we're about to do. My name is Dan and along with my friend Krista we have decided to buy a sailboat and put the snow covered hills and lakes of Minnesota in our rear view! We don't have a destination, but we do have a desire to see the world and experience this beautiful planet before we get too old. We honestly hope you'll enjoy following us as we learn to sail, buy a boat and grab life by the coconuts! Part of what we would like to show you is how to achieve this. From sailing lessons to building an income (which we have yet to do). We promise to share what we learn along the way in hopes of inspiring some of you to follow in our wake! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Yep, we are making our own square shanked copper rivets for Arabella. Not only are they bigger than the biggest commercially available rivet we could find, it is also saving us thousands of dollars! We also wanted to address some concerns people had with our other fasteners. Namely the bronze screws in the frames and the fin-head bolts we made for the backbone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

This season, we wanted to celebrate by making a donation to the charity we have been sailing for, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL). Since the day we monetized the channel, we decided we would ear-mark all our ad revenue for the Coral Reef Alliance. Recently, we passed the $1,000 mark, and decided it was time to take that money and make our first donation. So just remember, when you watch an ad on one of our videos, the Coral Reef Alliance gets a bit more money for their efforts. If you'd like to donate to the cause directly, you can go to: http://www.theadventuresoftarka.com/fundraiser or https://www.coral.org/donate/ We'd also like to thank our sponsors, that have played a significant role in make this mission successful to-date: Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection Victron Energy - Providing effective monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries

Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Is there a better way to celebrate your birthday than island hopping and sailing around the Whitsunday Islands in Australia? I'm not sure there is! Our mad dash up the Australian coast continues as we sail up to the Whitsundays and enjoy several weeks of beautiful beaches, clear water and even managed to knock out a boat project or two! Whitehaven Beach is as good as advertised. Hamilton Island is definitely swanky. Airlie Beach was great for provisioning and Hook Island had better than expected coral and diving! The Whitsundays really do offer a bit of everything. We would have stayed longer, but time was running short for us to get up to Cairns for the start of the Wonderful Sail to Indonesia rally. But you can be sure we'll be back one day! Thanks for watching! (Footage from June 2018) Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? I have seen a lot of comments that say this jack is cheap plastic and it could not lift a big truck with large tires. Well, here I am lifting a Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4 crew cab weighing 6,000 lbs with 35-inch tires! Also when you are looking at a jack for your car or truck, you don't go off the gross weight of the vehicle, you have to look at the axle weight for that tire. This is a 1-ton jack, the total weight of the truck is over 3-tons, but just one tire is well within the limitations of the jack. One ton is equal to 2000 LB so if we divide 3 tons by 4 tires we get to a weight of 1500 LB per tire. Since this is a truck and the engine is at the front, I will estimate that for the front at weighing 500 to 1000 lb more than the back. Even at 1000, this would bring the weight at one ton per tire, the max for this jack. Boat work never ends. Now our workshop is on the water but the list never ends from tweaking the dinghy outboard or climbing the mast to retrieve our broken wind instrument as well as getting dirty with the Jabsco head. But at least were liveaboard on the water now and we start experiencing the Lake Erie life. Let's get real and break it down. We've been livng aboard Balachandra for 1 full year here in the North Atlantic and we're ready to share what it actually cost for us to buy a boat, sail it home, and live aboard it year round through a harsh Canadian winter. In this video we talk about hidden costs, unexpected expenses, delivery costs, marina fees, heating, haul out\launch and budgetting for living on the cheap while cruising. If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! ▷UK BLOG AWARDS NOW ENDED _______________________________________________________________ With all the family and friends we'd had onboard there was yet another shopping trip ashore, but day tripper boats, jet skis and jet boats made the journeys through San Antonio anchorage even more hazardous than usual. So once our friend, Dan and his daughter Sophia joined us and another hair dressing lesson from Julie and Simon, we headed for Mallorca and searched out the best beaches and anchorages along the south coast. Inevitably there were maintenance issues along the way so it was great to have Dan to help out, especially with hoisting Woody up the mast to sort out the masthead light. The kids also took great delight in using the new halyard as a swing, although stormy weather quickly out a stop to the fun :/ Finally we said farewell to our guests and it was back to home schooling again using our new @cgpbooks We decided to explore ashore, visiting Colonia de Sant Jordi and Palma where the kids’ tried tapas for the first time, learned about different types of anchors (rocnas, plows, danforths deltas etc.) in a local chandlery and about conservation from a pop up exhibition near the cathedral, which all supplements their education. In light of recent criticism from the kids about our teaching methods lately, it was a relief to take teaching off the boat for a while. Grandad also joined us in Palma and he’s also good for a bit of living history too! We had another stock up from the local @lidlespana and @AldiSupermercados.es in Palmanova and also found loads @michaelmorpurgoofficial books (one of the kids’ favourite authors) in the Lions Club Mallorca shop. We also had fun meeting up with other cruisers, especially Lyn and Andy then headed to Santa Ponsa for water before going on to Camp de Mar. With so many guests this summer the maintenance jobs began to pile up – battery charger, automatic fresh water pump, manual fresh water pump, manual toilet pump.. all need looking at in the next blog! Our attempts to get to Soller were frustrated by unfavourable winds so we decided to take the train from Palma in the end and, what a journey! Through the mountains into Soller town before a taking a lovely walk to Porto Soller. PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. Maria and I left the pretty Rio San Andrés to head over to Vista Mar Marina to reunite with SV Joana. We encountered some dolphins and some whales along the way, had some good and non existent wind and some yummy passage food. Not too shabby of you ask me. And we went to visit the bay where We had stranded two years ago when Karl’s old engine decided to die... After our crossing from Norfolk VA, s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) arrives in St. George’s, and we plan to take few days “vacation” to explore beautiful Bermuda, a place we have both longed to visit. The visit gets extended to 10 days as we wait for a suitable weather window to Antigua. All this time s/v Cloudy Bay is moored in St. George’s on the town quay, but we have to move dock several times (4 in fact!) due to other boats comings and goings. One position we are rafted up to s/v Gale, a beautiful Swan66, where we get to know their friendly crew, and another position we end up bouncing off the bottom in the middle of he night, ruining our recent keel maintenance. Due to the extended stay, we get to explore all the island’s corners, beaches, fortifications, towns and generally exquisite scenery. We cycle around the east end and scooter two days along the south shore and the west end. It’s clearly an affluent island, very expensive, pretty scenery and a very safe feeling. St. George’s and Hamilton are both very picturesque towns, and the beaches along south shore are simply spectacular. But in November it was very quiet, didn’t feel like we were there quite in the right season. It is certainly a summer island season, with a warm winter. The highlights: St. George’s, Hamilton, Royal Naval Dockyard, the beaches on Cooper’s Island, Tobacco Bay, John Smith Beach, Elbow Beach, Astwood Park, Horseshoe Bay, Somerset Long Bay. With the Mavic, we took aerial views along the south shore, pretty amazing beaches and coves.

Where have we been??? Well, the simple explanation is we had to fire up the afterburners on our necessary boat projects to be able to get in the water before the 15th, meaning no time for editing and minimal filming. Why before the 15th? The yard we were at decided to more than double the liveaboard fees with very little notice, basically forcing us out of there. We had to be in the water by the 15th because they were going to stop moving boats for the holidays and the new fees take effect Jan 1st. That was enough motivation for us to work all day and night in order to be where you see Freebie now in this video. We put together all the footage we had of the past few weeks to get you completely up to date. Going forward, we have much more time to spend filming, editing, and uploading to YouTube, so we'll be getting back to our normal schedule starting soon. Stay tuned! Getting in the water is a big step for us and the YouTube channel. There will still be lots of DIY, but the footage will be much more varied and will finally include sailing, electric motor testing, travel, diving, kiteboarding, fishing, etc. Link to Sailrite: https://www.sailrite.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthel... We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. Paper charts are the most reliable and important form of navigational information that you can carry on your boat. They not only tell you where you are, but also what is around you and where any potential hazards might be. Having a paper chart is a critical backup to the convenient chart plotters that do everything for you, but knowing how to plot your position or read a position from the chart is imperative knowledge if you plan on actually using your charts. This video shows you the basics of how to plot your position on a chart, as well as you to find the position of a feature on the chart. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

***** You never realize just how big Australia is until you have to sail up the coast. Spoiler alert... it's big! We started out this leg of our trip with an overnight passage up to Fraser Island. But to get into Fraser from the south, you have to cross the Wide Bay Bar, aka "The Mad Mile." It has a reputation for being dangerous, so we timed our crossing quite carefully. Once inside, we celebrated with some drone flying, paddleboarding and enjoying some amazing sunsets. The weather didn't really cooperate for us to head out to the Great Barrier Reef, so instead we left Fraser and set sail for Great Keppel Island. There was still more boatwork we had to do, so we crossed that off our to-do list and then enjoyed exploring the island. And then our last passage for this video (see we were really moving!) was up to the famous cruiser hangout at Middle Percy Island. Unfortunately, we didn't get the true Percy experience, as we were the only cruisers there at the time, but it was still cool to get on the island and leave a mark for people to follow! Zaya v2.0 is back this week. It's boat projects, a DIY sliding hatch and a trip to marine timbers. What can we say? We promised her a sweet Bahamas cruise and gave her a pot of epoxy and some sandpaper instead. Has this put an end to the sailing bug for our wonderful niece?

Winter is coming and there is always something to do. We worked on getting Victoria buttoned up for the winter and hosted a middle school class for a field trip. With all that out of the way and frames well sanded and oiled, it was time to bed and screw in the frames. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE - it's FREE!!! ➜ https://www.sailingbritaly.com/subscribe In this "Boat Work" video I replace the 26-year-old saildrive diaphragm seal on our boat. I disconnect the saildrive from the engine, move the engine forward, then remove the saildrive assembly from the boat. I then split the saildrive leg from the transmission and replace the diaphragm seal along with some associated gaskets and o-rings. While I'm at it I replace the prop shaft seals and lower bearing housing o-rings on our Volvo Penta saildrive. I then reinstall all of the above ready for our launch, which went successfully: https://youtu.be/HTXOkjmZuhw We saved $$$$ by doing this job ourselves & I share the mistakes I made during this job with you so that you can avoid making any of them! :-) Whilst doing this job (on my own) Rossella, Emma (6 months old at the time) and I were living on board, up on top of a cradle, in a gravel car park, hundreds of miles away from our family. At the same time as filming this video, we were filming all the other jobs we were doing on the boat during our DIY refit (including filming separate sections of video about this job) AND editing AND uploading DAILY videos to our YouTube Channel. We were sleep-deprived, and although we must have been crazy to take on all of the above, we are very proud that we were able to achieve everything that we did in that period. If this video helps you in any way then show us some love by joining our Patreon Crew. You get exclusive benefits (like seeing our videos before anyone else, getting our CREW or PRODUCER baseball caps sent to you anywhere in the world, or even have Rossella and I contact you by email or videocall to help you in any way we can, whether that be buying a boat, helping you troubleshoot technical problems problems on your boat, or giving you any other kind of advice you would like!) We do everything as a team and Rossella's hard behind-the-scenes work is absolutely essential in allowing me to make videos like this, so here's a big thank you to Rossella!
