Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
Sometimes instead of just building things we need to build things that will fix other things. This week was one of those weeks. The wardrobe we built a few weeks ago ended up too heavy and it warped on the center of the span. So the challenge this week was to come up with a solution so the wardrobe sits straight on it's place. #buildingaplank #buildingboat After 20 days at a bumpy anchorage we are finally allowed to go into the Marina. As The ARC just left for their crossing the Marina has space for us and all the boats on the anchorage. So now we are able to start all the maintenance on the boat to get ready to cross the Atlantic. We start with replacing the hob in the galley, we build a fibreglass plank, instal a battery monitor as the one from Lagoon doesn’t give any accurate information. We also prepare a boom preventor and a MOB lift in case we need on our crossing, it’s just good to be prepared for anything we can think of. We are really enjoying this life and share everything with you it's been wonderful . Thank you very much, you guys are amazing. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Much love Carla and Simon

In this video I show you by example how to build your own multiplexing digital chartplotter with autopilot control, AIS, GPS, and Wifi capability using a Raspberry Pi Arduino, and your existing marine instruments for very little cost; that can be used with your phone, ipad, android or windows tablet, or laptop. If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. While stuck at anchor in Santa Ponsa waiting for our water pump and battery charger to arrive, we decide to go ashore and check the ridiculously loud music keeping us awake at night! It turned out to be the Festival del Rei en Jaumer - a week long festival of food, music and entertainment which ended with a foam party and magnificent firework display! Having Granddad onboard gave us another excuse to go to Palma again and this time we visited the impressive, Palma Cathedral and try the local paella and sangria. Two weeks without water pump meant we had to desperately seek out swimming pools and beach showers and manually pump 20L of water into the solar shower.. which didn't go far with 6 of us onboard! It was a smelly boat by the time our @MARCOspaCompany water pump and the #mastervolt battery charger turned up. The kids quickly turned the packaging into new toys and Woody fitted the new equipment and fun though Santa Ponsa was, it was a relief to be on the move again Homeschooling continued and for science we made a @yankodesign scale model of Theo Jansen's strandbeest - so cool! We then visited @JungleParcMallorc the Treetops adventure playground for some fun in the trees! The Balearic islands seemed to attract a lot of storms later in the season and we began thinking of shelter for the winter and perhaps even finding a Spanish school for the kids as they've had little opportunities to socialise with other kids lately. Then more maintenance issues - our @Raymarine autopilot gave up! :/ It becomes quite demoralising after a while - things constantly breaking down all the time. We finally left Mallorca (or is it Majorca?) for Ibiza in what we thought was a good weather window, but as Woody was calmly enjoying a cup of his beloved @yorkshiretea we sailed straight into a thunderstorm! Luckily we came through unscathed so we poled out the head sail (the set up copied from a year 2000 @AmelYachts brochure!) and headed for San Antonio. Rowan read her current favourite book by @DanBrown while the boys played and learned about sound signals and navigation! Then disaster struck. As we were leaving the dock after a final water stop, we ripped a huge hole in the dinghy which on top of everything else going wrong on the boat was completely demoralising - this is not a good way to 'live the dream'. We still had several hundred miles to travel.. and now no dinghy to get to shore. So as the end of the summer season draws to a close - we head to Almerimar for the winter and catch up with blogs and maintenance.. and if anyone has any of the following going spare... Dinghy, AIS transponder, autopilot, microwave, depth sounder, washing machine, wind instruments, folding bike, solar panels, boat fridge, new batteries... please let us know! ...in fact just message us for the whole list! ;) PLEASE NOTE: YouTube have disabled comments on family channels because they sometimes feature kids. This is, without a doubt, the easiest way to solder wires on your boat [Solder Sleeves]. Subscribe to our Channel, it's FREE! 🔔 ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ Solder Sleeves: https://amzn.to/2SMx3b7 - Amazon US or https://amzn.to/2AyY9LN - Amazon UK or https://amzn.to/2Mid1mw - Amazon Canada Boat wiring just got ridiculously easy... Despite me working offshore with ROVs, where soldering is a regular occurrence, I only discovered solder sleeves fairly recently. Most people I have worked with offshore solder in pairs. First the wires are 'tinned', then one guy holds the wires in position, with the heat-shrink pre-installed and held out of the way of the joint, while the other guy holds the solder and uses the soldering iron. Working with short cable lengths, which need to be kept tidy so that they can be potted for subsea use, the above operation often results in burnt fingers (mostly ignored in a manly fashion, sometimes accompanied by bad language and a hand-shaking jazz-dance, followed by a laugh from both parties.) Both guys also get to breathe in soldering fumes, which are supposedly carcinegenic... For years I have avoided some of the above problems by using the spring on the the soldering iron holder (or my legs depending on the situation) as a "helping hand" type device, holding the iron, which gives me two free hands to solder alone. This is how I would solder on the boat too, until I discovered solder sleeves! Now joining two wires can done with one hand, there are no fumes and you don't even need a soldering iron to join two wires together. The finished job is airtight, watertight (up to a point), mechanically strong and electrically perfect - and from a dimensional perspective, there is more meat on a vegan yoga teacher's pencil, which means you can fit about 1,000 wires through a small orifice (running cables is often a pain in the derriere on boats - thin cables are much easier to work with and don't get stuck as often). What more could you ask for?! A complete kit of these won't set you back much more than a roll of flux-core solder. That's a bargain if you ask me! Before anyone brings up something these can't be used for... No, it won't be replacing my soldering iron and the old-school techniques which have served me well for years, but it is a wonderful addition to any boat's tool kit. I would choose this over standard soldering any time! Thanks for watching! Buy yourself some solder sleeves and share this video with your mates. Cheers! 👍 ⛵Sailing Britaly⛵ brings you the sailing shenanigans of Chris (British), Rossella (Italian), and baby Emma (Britalian!) Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** The passage from Cairns to Thursday Island marked the end of our seven months of sailing in Australia. And what a seven months they were! In all, we sailed 2,300nm in Australia and this leg had some of the best sailing yet. There was lots of wind from deep behind us, which allowed us to use only headsails and still sail fast. We were sailing through the narrow channels in the Great Barrier Reef so it was great not to have to jibe a million times messing with the mainsail. On our way north, we made a quick stop at Lizard Island. We enjoyed catching up with friends, completed our watermaker recommissioning and hiked to the top of the island for the same view Captain Cook had way back in 1770! And then to wrap up our time in Australia, we did one last mini-adventure on Thursday Island before clearing out of the country. Indonesia... here we come! Thanks for watching! In this vlog we broke the first rule of seamanship: beware the land. We made a few HUGE mistakes including but not limited to: 1. Failing to plan 2. Trying to go into an unknown anchorage at night 3. Not turning back when we saw breakers on both sides of the channel 4. Trusting the GPS WAY more than we should have Hands down we were foolhardy, we made multiple mistakes, and we got the reality check we needed to learn from our behavior. We came out a lot better off than maybe we deserved. We could have easily lost the boat, and although Freebie is insured, that still would have been horrible for us, for you, and for those involved in pulling the boat off the shore. Going forward, we won't underestimate what the land can do to ocean-going vessels, and we'll be sure to constantly tread lightly and with care to not make these same mistakes again. This was a very humbling experience and one that we'll never forget. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthelines Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthelines Amazon Wishlist: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/2FFJ6SE8DI80V ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. Hauled out primarily to remove antifoul that was too expensive to do in USA. Also change fridge keel cooling system from Isotherm to Frigoboat; removed varnish and much much more. s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) is out the water again, to complete the works on the hull that could not be done in Herrington, MD, USA. These were the tasks: - Chemically stripped the antifoul back to the original barrier coat, applied InterProtect and antifoul. Managed to get back to the original waterline mark. Stripping by soda blast in the USA was too expensive plus the outside temperatures for re-painting were too low. - Install 3 new Frigoboat keel coolers, better suited to warm waters than our current Isotherm ones. Brazing of the pipes was needed. No one in the USA would do us that service. - Strip the Coelan “varnish” off the gunwale following the damage by the collision in New England. The intention was to re-varnish, but the constant random rain showers put us off. And debated long and hard whether to re-varnish in consideration of the necessary maintenance in these climates. Sadly, we ended up leaving it bare teak, …. for now. - Tried to have the vang serviced again, but he riggers did not have the parts. So we instead renewed the hydraulic oil in the entire system hoping that would fix the minor oil leak. - Installed a new cockpit light with a LED strip in the underside of the boom. - Put in new teak plugs to the coach roof handrails. - …plus a few other little bit and pieces. All with the usual amount of frustrations, and attention to detail, like we do! 11-23 Dec 2018

Arabella has 70 frames. That's a fair amount of steaming. So, we thought it would be interesting to show what a full day of steaming looks like. Not to mention, who can get tired of watching those timbers bend like that? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built.
Not only are we in the water, but WE'RE SAILING!!! In this vlog we finish up a couple projects and start making our way out of the canal and into Charlotte Harbor. We installed a brand new Electric Yacht motor and twelve Lithium Battleborn batteries not long ago, so this passage is the first real open water test of all of the new systems. We also have 600W of Renogy solar panels that are new. It's just one big shakedown as we're learning how everything will work in the real world out on the water. So far we're quite happy with how the motor, batteries and panels are performing. We're stoked to have a boat that is as close to "off-the-grid" as it can get. We don't have to carry any type of fuel onboard. We never need to fill a diesel, propane, or gasoline tank, and to us that's quite liberating. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. The Salt Spring looks small, but it is an amazing 351 feet deep, to our knowledge to date. Gray fox, gopher tortoises and dolphins call this park and its waters home. Birdwatchers can enjoy sighting Bald Eagles, Roseate Spoonbills, the elusive Black Rail, a Leucistic Red Tailed Hawk (named Lue), as well as other raptors, wading birds, shore birds and migratory songbirds. Although this park protects four miles of pristine coastline along the Gulf of Mexico in western Pasco County, due to the mangroves lining the shoreline we have no beaches or swimming area. Swimming is available outside the park on Durney Key which can be reached by launching your kayak or canoe in the park. Maps are available at the kiosk as well as the concession's office. For the paddling enthusiasts, visitors are welcome to bring their own kayaks or canoes or rent them here at the park. We have three entrances to the park: The main entrance is located on U.S. 19 at 8737 U.S. 19 Port Richey FL 34668 This entrance has restrooms, kayak/canoe launch, boardwalks, hiking trails, picnic area and concessions. Nawal takes us on a first hand travel adventure of the coastal regions of Lebanon in the Middle East; visiting marinas, beaches and ancient historical sites like Baalbek. Lebanon is a beautiful country with lots to see and do. Come along with us as Nawal explores Lebanon! Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! Fellow boaters - I'm thrilled to share my latest project with you: MaintenanceROS! Crafted from my experiences aboard Starry Horizons, it's designed to simplify vessel and maintenance management, making life on the water even more enjoyable. Explore https://MaintenanceROS.com and enjoy an exclusive 20% discount for the first 6 months using promo code 'outchasingstars'. Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** It's time to sail from the Whitsunday Islands up to Cairns. The only problem... it won't stop raining! Grey and wet weather doesn't make for a whole lot of fun and the high winds meant we had to skip sailing out to the Great Barrier Reef. That was a big bummer, but we were excited to get up to Cairns where we'd have the first meeting of the Wonderful Sail 2 Indonesia Rally. It was great to meet the people we'd be spending the next 3 months with and really drove home that our time cruising Australia was just about done. Cairns was our last large city in Australia so we tried to make the most of it. We ran some errands, did some provisioning and when we (finally) got a decent gap in the rain, I was able to do some needed repair work on our watermaker. Thanks for watching! (Footage from June 2018) Want to learn more about how to change out a watermaker membrane? Check out this video from Rich at CruiseRO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPpMh6dkUT8 Carlos and Linda did a fantastic job documenting the effort of the cruising community to help rebuild a destroyed school in Lombok after the earthquake. Back to Marina life! I had moved Karl to Vista Mar Marina so Maria could give me a hand to weld the hole in my fuel tank. It’s also time for some engine maintenance! Unfortunately, I find a little something that adds another fairly big project to the boat job list: a small leak under the waterline. Time to hop into the water and fix the leak with some Splash Zone, an epoxi that cures under water.
Proceeds from this video will go to the Coral Reef Alliance, but you can also support me directly (and specifically the production of these videos) by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/theadventuresoftarka Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. How to do your brakes in minutes, the tools you will need, and what to look for. In this video, I will be working on a jeep wrangler, but disc brakes are the same on most cars. Just replacing bake pads in very easy and long as you don't let them wear down and scar the rotor. If they get to the point of metal on metal and scar your rotor, at a minimum you'll have to get the rotor turned. If the rotor is too far gone, it will have to be replaced making your brake job cost so much more. Funny that the jeep didn't need brakes but it was great practice.
