After the dinghy disaster in Ibiza the kids surprised us with their ability to spring into action and make dinner while we dealt with the problem. A few days later we found the footage of their.. inspired approach. Leaving Ibiza, we headed for the Spanish mainland, and met up with friends as we coastal hopped our way south. Our trips ashore were made more challenging without a proper dinghy so we had to draft the kids dinghy and paddle-board into action. We had an awesome final sail into Almerimar where we celebrated with fish n chips, hung up our flip flops and prepared to try Spanish school for the kids and prepare a long boat maintenance list! I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

In this Episode; Part 1 We begin exploring the amazing Belizean Barrier Reef and the tiny Cayes and Islands dotted all over the area. Navigation here is tricky to say the least with Charts that are over one hundred years old, reefs have grown, sand bars have shifted. Slow careful navigation here is a must! Some anchorages are over 60 feet deep as depths climb rapidly to protected anchorages amongst the mangrove Cayes. We welcome our first guests aboard to share the experience of learning to sail a big Cat and what it's really like living a life on the Sea. A week long adventure of learning to sail, getting a taste of what it’s like living on a catamaran in the Caribbean, how we make our power and our water, and how we provision, cook, diesel maintenance and more… all while exploring the amazing Belizean Barrier Reef! We had a great time, made some great friends and shared our lives a step past our videos... They came as strangers to us and left as great friends, although they had a pretty good idea of who we are before the came Lol! This video shares some of the highlights of that first trip… I hope it doesn’t feel like an advertisement, it wasn’t made in that fashion. Simply an opportunity to share with the world, more of the adventure, and that’s what we are all about… Sharing the Adventure! Please SUBSCRIBE and tap on the NOTIFICATION BELL! You too can spend an all inclusive week with us aboard our catamaran Saltair3 learning how to live a life on the sea and leave a small environmental foot print, how to prepare, repair, provision, catch fish and lobster, how to safely check into foreign countries and learn to sail a Big Cat, or just sit back, relax and enjoy being aboard Saltair3 in the warm and beautiful Caribbean Sea. We often get asked about our camera gimbal on the back of the boat so this week we take a short break from boat maintenance to explain about our setup. What we have done in the past, and how the new and improved mk3 version is going to address some of the limitations We make these films just for fun, and we hope that you have enjoyed watching them however we have been asked on a couple of occasions now if we have a Paytreon account. We don’t want to do that at this stage as we feel it would turn the channel into a business, and as we said at the beginning, this is all just for fun. However if you would like to support us and feel you could help contribute to the cost of making these films then you can do that via our PayPal account here. https://www.paypal.me/TheFoxwellFamily And a big thank you to everyone that has supported us so far, its very much appreciated. All the frames are steamed in! AND we got donated a TON of white cedar! We have been thinking about our planking material since we started and were wondering if it would be worth buying cedar or if we were better off planking in our beautiful white oak and pine. But a fan contacted us to say he had white cedar we could cut off his property. So... that means we have to cool our heels a little bit as we have to wait on the cedar. A good task, while we work all that out, is starting to disassemble Victoria. There is going to be lots of good stuff coming from that project! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. Our DIY refit continues... Drinking water from a boat's tank can taste pretty bad. Can a $20 under sink water filter kit REALLY solve this problem? First, it will have to pass Rossella's incredibly demanding taste test! Subscribe for more informative videos, it's FREE! ➜ http://bit.ly/SBYouTube⛵ You can buy the under sink water filter kits here: 🛒 https://amzn.to/2TlvGk3 (USA - our exact kit, almost as cheap as the UK) 🛒 https://amzn.to/2UrpdEa (Amazon UK - our exact kit, cheap as chips!) 🛒 https://amzn.to/2Sdraqf (Amazon Canada - our exact kit, almost as cheap as the UK) The manufacturer recommends changing the filter every 6 months, but as the volume of water consumed on board will be less than that used on a home installation, we are going to try stretching ours to 12 months. This is to save on waste, rather than any financial saving: Replacement activated-carbon filters for the above kits only cost around £3 each if you buy a pack of 10! We will be making one of our "Boat work" videos showing you exactly how we installed the under sink water filter kit on our boat so make sure you are subscribed and enable notifications so you get to see that when it's ready. In this vlog we take you on a typical day for us at anchor. Pretty much every day we get some projects done, film, do some editing, and run errands. Our boat is 100% powered by the sun so we're not dependent on going to shore for anything but food and drinking water at this point. In the works are plans for a watermaker so that we can make our own drinking water aboard while we cruise, so we won't even need to go to shore for that. To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
The independence to travel remotely in a trawler requires self-sufficiency. For many reasons, especially being ready to handle a new learning experience that presents itself at an inopportune moment, it is critical to plan ahead and assemble a varied assortment of hand tools to assist with onboard projects. These “tools-of-the-trade” are different for every trawler and for every trawler owner. You don’t need to be an engineer or have an in depth understanding of every system, you will learn as you go. If you take care of your trawler, it will take care of you. Every trawler has a variety of systems and equipment that need attention. Some are constantly monitored by gauges and meters, others are ignored until they start letting you know something is amiss. There is almost always a new project to check off your list (and a new one to add). This is easier for those who possess an inherent mechanical aptitude, however, your attitude can overcome a lack of practice if you are willing to learn and eager to try. It is incredibly satisfying to diagnose a problem and solve it using your own hands. Every successfully completed chore builds more confidence and you will become more proficient each time you repeat a drill you have done before. The JMYS team is comprised of experienced boaters, many own or have owned trawlers and we like to advise our clients on what tools they should carry in case something goes wrong or something needs attention. We enjoy meeting with trawler operators and learning about the assortment of tools that they keep aboard to assist with maintenance and repairs. This video represents some of the tools that Kevin Jeffries carries aboard his Nordhavn 55, Red Rover. Kevin and I went through Red Rover where he showed me his accumulated stashes and we filmed a video to discuss some of his tool selections and how they are used. In the TRAWLER TOOLS section of the JMYS website we have assembled a library of photos to show how different trawler owners approach and handle the selection and storage of tools. To read more and see photos go to JMYS Trawler Tools or click this link: https://jmys.com/trawler-skills/trawler-tools/ Please feel free to include your comments below. Better yet, please email your ideas to Jeff@JMYS.com and put “Trawler Tools” in the subject line, thank you! We go over the budget to install an Atmor Tankless water heater and parts needed. It just made sense to go with the Tankless over a Tank water heater. The cost, if doing it yourself can be very budget-friendly making the payback of going from a tank to tankless water heater very short. If not doing the work yourself it may be cheaper to go back with a tank water heater, the labor in doing a tankless can be very expensive. We share all our little tips and tricks we've developed from a whole year of living aboard a sailboat full time. From the galley to the Nav Station, we show you all the little mods we've made to make our sailboat home more comfortable and manageable, especially in a cold climate. If you like these videos, please SUBSCRIBE to see more, and be sure to give this video a like! In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is my YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. I also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! We are really enjoying this life and share everything with you it's been wonderful . Thank you very much, you guys are amazing. Much love Carla & Simon A little bit about us... We met in the summer 2015, we were introduced to each other by the virtual world. Eighteen months later we were getting married on a beautiful beach on Barbados, bare foot, very simple ceremony just like a dream! Two days after the wedding laying on the beach, talking about sailing, Carla suggested... why don't we sail around the world? Guess what Simon said? "Let's do it" He took it with no second thoughts! And here we are, fifteen months after that day in Barbados, we started our adventure in Croatia. We made it happen working through all the challenges on the way. Now we are enjoying this wonderful life, and what a wonderful life it is! As we travel we will cross less fortunate countries, we would love to help to build a school or a health care centre, anything that these people may need, and in our beautiful world this is taken for granted. But for these people it's a dream, or may not even be a dream. We will look around and when the opportunity to help comes we will put our hands and hearts in to it. Today I fix that, but while I'm in there ;) I completely detail the wheels ending with ceramic coating. The worst is always the prep. I "detail" the whole procedure. While at Peck Lake, Tambi constructs a DIY solar oven. It did actually work a little bit - increasing the temperature of her left over french fries from a balmy 40 F to something more resemblant of room temperature. An incoming cold front has us bunkering down for most of a week, but we do amuse ourselves with trips to the beach, some dinghy sailing, and a couple of basic boat projects as well. To round out the video, you'll observe some of Molly's excellent dance moves, as well as watching Tambi learn how to sail the dinghy. Thanks for watching!! In this episode I make and fit 2 more small beams for the V berth for some extra stiffness support, do a little more hand tools maintenance and make and fit the first main part of the MAIN bulkhead between the for'ward cabin and the saloon. And Jfyi here is the explanation of the use of the words "saloon" and "salon" and it is from The Boating Encyclopedia - "Hairdressers, beauticians, and couturiers have salons; sailors have a saloon." Those from area's such as Australia, N.Z. and the U.K generally use the word 'saloon', whereas those from area's around the U.S. generally use the word 'salon'. There were many reasons why, but the work stopped,... However, the work has re-started, thankfully, and I am on an exciting journey to finish Mistress and then go on my sailing adventures,... Ever look at marine cabin flooring and be turned off because of the price? We have too. What's so great about it that demands such a premium? We've spoken to real cruisers who have used other products and get a similar result for MUCH less. We decided to go with a very economical solution from Home Depot, called Trafficmaster Allure in Teak color. It's fully waterproof, has texture, and has enough flex that it'll conform to a slight curvature. That's all you need for cabin flooring. I wouldn't use it outside the cabin, but inside it should be perfectly fine. We ended up spending about a tenth of the cost of using a "marine" product. Sailing Uma used a similar flooring and it's been in their boat for three years with no issues. We've also personally used this flooring in the condo we owned prior to moving aboard, and it worked great. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not-A-Broker Consulting: https://www.patreon.com/notabrokerconsulting Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/learningthel... Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/learningthe... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way. Please leave a like and comment if you've enjoyed the video, and subscribe if you haven't already.
We had a little problem when our Lazy Jack line broke. Lazy Jacks hold the main sail in place a bit on extra windy days, especially during raising and lowering. It got caught on the main sail one day and snapped the line inside the mast, as well as the screw holding the line guide onto the mast.. So, Captain Stephen decided to DIY this repair. Mission accomplished. For more catamaran yacht maintenance, visit: http://bluedotvoyages.com/catamaran-yacht-maintenance/
Being a new boat to us, we haven't spent a ton of time yet in the bilge. This is Stephen's favorite part of the boat. So, today was bilge cleaning and checking day. Now, it's SO clean you could store sushi there. But we won't. See more Catamaran Maintenance videos here: http://bluedotvoyages.com/catamaran-yacht-maintenance/

Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.

Time to push our sailing skills with anchoring for the first time. We spend the day sailing to Point Abino on the East end of Lake Erie before dropping the hook. And we realize that our batteries have seen better days so we hoist a solar light for an anchor light and try to sleep in a rolly anchorage. All that with Alex's sister and her partner Ugo. Then it's off to some exploring with the family at Niagara Falls. #firstnightatanchor #wildlyintrepid #sailinglakeErie Want to know how we did it? Much love Carla and Simon

Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** Sailing to Indonesia seems like a fantastic way to celebrate Episode 100!!! Can you believe we've come this far?? This was no ordinary passage either. After leaving Australia, we had to do some technical sailing, adjusting to wind shifts by trying different sail combinations as well as our spinnaker and screecher. It kicked our ass for a while, but we finally found the right set up and enjoyed sailing fast. But the biggest issue we faced on this passage was dodging the fishing fleets found in this part of the world. Check it out and see what I mean. Thanks for watching (and sticking with us for 100 episodes)! (Footage from July 2018) Curious for more up to date info on where we are and what we're doing? We're super stoked to have our new headsail up on the boat and we can't wait to go sailing with it! The sail came out great, it looks awesome, and it fits really well. Initially, we're definitely impressed. We're just one step closer to more tropical waters, but for now we're working on a few projects in Marco Island before we continue south. We hope you guys enjoy this shorter vlog about the new sail and hope you find some information in it useful. We'll have a more typical vlog out very soon! This week we tackle a problem that has been facing us for a little while now. We have had in the stateroom ceiling just on the outside of the mast opening in the deck. I had thought that when we had the deck glassed it would solve the issue and it certainly slowed it down. But it was still leaking a little. In this first part of a 2 part video series, we will show how we determined where the problem was, discuss our options and settle on a path forward. From there it was starting to do the work. In this video (part 1) we prepare the surface for a glass repair, epoxy fill some gaps in the mast plate base and take all the steps to get ready to lay the glass (Part 2 is where we lay the glass down and see our results) Also in this video, we have to tow our dinghy to a local boat ramp to pull her out and get ready for some maintenance work. We ran into a really odd situation with a good Samaritan. I know this guy was just trying to help and he didn't do any real damage, but it was frustrating. The irony of this is he is the one that got all annoyned. See what he did and listen to the crazy things he was saying. I suppose he didn't see the camera mounted on the car capturing the whole thing :) (As a side note, this person referred to himself as a "CoonAss", not my words but this is a cajun reference to growing up rural and on the Bayou) How to fiberglass, How to stop a leak, how to service your mast step, Keel Stepped Mast maintenance, Dinghy, Zodiak, Good Samaritan, unwanted help, Whats got it, coonass, Crazy Cajun, Not helpful, Don't forget to like and share this video Please check out our other videos as well and click on the playlist below for a couple we think you may enjoy. As we steam in Arabella's frames we have now reached the aft section of the build and need to cut the rabbet up the sides of the stern posts to determine where our frame sockets should land. Once cut we spend a day steaming in frames with a couple snags along the way. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com
