On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we’re doing it again! We travel the ICW and cross over the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas. Of course, along the way we run into some “engine problems” and experience our roughest passage yet! Despite the rough start, we have an amazing night sail and finally arrive to our destination, Manjack Cay in Abaco. This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! ***FILMED FEBRUARY 2020 *** —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND https://www.epidemicsound.com/referral/8umi8w/ —————————————————— DISCLOSURE: Sailing on a Whim is a participant in affiliate advertising programs, including but not limited to the Amazon Services LLC Associations Program. Donations can also be made directly by visiting their website: http://www.coral.org Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific. Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by: Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to. === Music credits: Dance With Me – Ehrling: https://soundcloud.com/ehrling
Get ready to experience what it's really like sailing in the Exumas in the Bahamas. We go spearfishing with sharks from bull sharks to nurse shark and eat spiny lobsters and red hind fish in Highborne Cay. We also go feed the famous Bahamas rock iguanas of Allan's Cay, a tropical island. And we enjoy some great sailing and even fireworks with our friends from @SailingVinyasa. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #exumas #spearfishing ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. Alix continues work on Arabella with making and installing the lodging knees at midship. These, along with the rigidity of the housetop, will help keep the deck structure from racking. We also get to see the end of Steve and Robin's vacation adventure as they wander some more in the Organ Mountains before heading to the Enchanted Tower for some sport climbing and finally stopping at White Sands National Monument on their way back to the airport. Thank you all for watching and supporting! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro Illustrations by Scott Ouderkirk from Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

This week we pull Merewether out of the water for a much needed antifouling and general maintenance, with little to no experience we tackel the jobs ahead all by ourselves and safe to say we learn a lot throughout. With very long days, many mosquitos and tough labourer we bring you along, uncensored, and raw. We sand the hole bottom twice (to Kieran's delight...) sand by hand and remove the bow thruster blades, giving them a much needed maintenance. Stay tuned for part 2! Join our crew! Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=19042899 In this episode we sailed from the kepple islands to a small protected creek to replace our front stay without the help of a professional. We felt it was very necessary to get this job done since we have been travelling down the coast from Airlie Beach with a broken front stay. This job did take too long to happen and we are very thankful that nothing went wrong in the process of fixing it ourselves. Hope you guys learnt a thing or two from watching this video and let me know if this has ever happened to you in the comment section below And If you fixed it yourself or got a professional to do it. Ahoy! We are Miguel and Saskia. In July 2020 we left Amsterdam aboard Saetta, a 1983 Moody 41, to see more from the world. We plan to cross the Atlantic Ocean around December 2020. On this channel, you can follow our trip: where we go, how we get there, what we explore, our joys and our struggles. In this video, we prepare for a storm that is passing by and we ride out the waves in the anchorage. There is more boat work (does it ever stop?!) but we also explore more of the Algarve, together with Joao and Leticia. In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos! All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance How do you fix a bilge pump with so many things going wrong with it? When I removed our old Whale / Henderson Mk5 the only thing that WAS working was the motor - everything else seemed to be broken. The diaphragm, the inlet valve, the outlet valve and even the screw holes were worn out so they all had to be replaced from the service pack. Before fixing it back in place I tested it in a bucket of water then gave the grey water bilge a much needed clean and gave the bonding strap its annual check up too. We reinstall the fuel tanks, restock the freezer, gain back a modern-day luxury, and service the engines. We're making progress my friends, very good progress! 🍍 Food Prep I am a big fan of reusable silicone bags. I have them in all shapes and sizes. I prefer them over classic Tupperware style containers. There are no lids to fiddle with, they take up less storage space, they are plastic-free (made of 100% silicone), they're oven and freezer safe too. Best silicone bags: https://amzn.to/36hAY95 ⛽ Fuel Tank Fix A huge thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. As mentioned, our fave and wish-we-had-access-to product is the fuel tank liner. We will most likely remove the tanks and coat them with a similar product once we get to New Zealand or Australia. Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild #adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible. We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life. And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure. Last week we boarded s/v Blown Away for the first time for the sea trial and a few days later, on 19 November, we closed and moved aboard. It was an amazingly moment – both thrilling and daunting. We have much to learn, but we will take baby steps each day. This video is a complete tour of the Leopard 44’. We show you inside every space – cabinets, floor compartments, etc. It will give you a great feel for the capacity of the boat and its systems. We hope you enjoy it! Let us know if there is something we may have missed! In future videos, we will deep dive into the systems, their purpose & maintenance. It will be a reference video for us and any new sailor. But, for now, enjoy this video tour and for more information about our boat and us, click https://www.sailingblownaway.com/faq #sailing #sailboat #sailingprojects #scuba #catamaran #charter#sunsail #moorings NEW TO OUR CHANNEL? We are Eileen and Brown Councill. Welcome to our channel and a glimpse into our life adventure! 2020 was a year of uncertainty and change (for all of us, right?), but we overcame the challenges and decided it was time to chase our dream, to sail around the world! Did I mention that we had very NO sailing experience? Before leaving Qingdao, China, our home of 4 years, we sold almost all of our earthly possessions and started our international search to find the right sailboat that we would call "home." After 5 months of unanticipated twists and turns, we found what we were looking for, a used Leopard 44' Catamaran located in St. Lucia. So, here begins our journey, filled with unmatched excitement and honestly, a bit of trepidation as well. We have much to learn as we travel the world on our floating home and we intend to document that journey and share it with you. We are so glad you have decided to join us, and we hope that you will find our story so compelling that it will inspire you to chase your dreams too! As a viewer, we consider you to be part of our family and look forward to getting to know you. Don't hesitate to comment on our videos and ask questions. We will do our best to answer every correspondence! All we ask is that you have patience with us as we work really hard to improve our camera/video techniques and ability to tell a story. Hopefully, you will be as BLOWN AWAY from watching, as we are in experiencing and producing our adventures! HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT US? If you wish to support our video efforts, all we ask is that you SUBSCRIBE, give a THUMBS UP, SHARE our videos with your friends, AND COMMENT! WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET TO KNOW US MORE DEEPLY? This video shows part of the maintenance and service work on Zubenubi in October / November 2020. We commissioned the shipyard BMS in Canet en Roussillon for the various works and can only recommend BMS. Canet en Roussillon is specialised in catamarans and could easily be renamed in Catamaran City. Towards the end of the video there is also the successful and funny birthday greeting to Rolf from the yacht Wasabi. http://www.bmsmed.com https://www.epure66.fr
In this chapter, we sail from Athens, through the narrow channel off Poros and South towards the Peloponnese. Sadly the preventative maintenance we had invested in Caladh on Samos was beginning to unravel. This coupled with the growing pandemic and the reality of its global impact, threw hundreds of variables into sharp relief for T and I. Much like the culprit of our 'knocking' sound, we were beginning to be a bit ground down. Life on the boat is isolated and, in many ways, we were some of the safest individuals on the planet. That said, the concern for family and friends and the physical separation was intensifying. As we all know, a week is a very long time in a pandemic, so our plans were changing regularly. I share this with you because you might notice we appear on camera slightly less this episode, but also to break the fourth wall social media mirage and delusion of 'everything is perfect'. I mean I think we shatter this fairly regularly ANYway(!), with toilet pumps breaking, tornados and leaks, but nevertheless, I think it's a pertinent reminder - especially in 2020. The reality is that we have captured what we could at the time and more often than not, this is when we were feeling more up to it... but like most people this year, we struggled too. However, we were on a mission to stay safe and keep our options open. So we pulled our socks up as best we could and decided to sail beyond Spetses to escape the (now busy) charter-boat zones and head for the Peloponnese. Mother nature was on our side and we were rewarded with some fantastic downwind sailing, accompanied by dramatic mountainous valleys, deserted anchorages and crystal-clear waters. The veil of worry was still there, but we took what we could and for us, the Peloponnese was exactly the kind of adventure into raw mother nature we love - a timely reminder. So pour yourself a drink, sit back, relax for a moment and join us for some escapism as we venture into the Peloponnese. Subscribe to our website for updates! This is the biggest fish we've ever caught while sailing and of our life. Turns out the sail across the Exuma Sound was lucky and all downwind. We waited out a storm perfectly protected in Rock Sound. And after provisioning we decided to cross over to Allan's Cay in the Northern Exumas with our new buddy boat. It was the beginning of the sailing adventure with Sailing Vinyasa and we were off to a great start with fresh mahi mahi sushi and sashimi. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! #sailing #mahimahi #exumas ***************************************** Help the videos stay alive by becoming a patron, donating or becoming a YouTube Member. [Day 19 VG2020] Last chance for the big DIY jobs on LinkedOut before the less favourable southern seas. Other skippers, on the contrary, savor the magical moments, from gliding through the water on Groupe APICIL or a well-deserved crossing of the equator for DMG MORI Global One.
We all need a break from big projects and this time it's Steve's turn! As Alix stays back to look after Arabella and the boathouse to continue work on fitting and installing some knees and short beams. Steve and his partner head off on an adventure out west. With plans to do some climbing, including a seriously obscure traverse of a wild range of peaks. In this episode, you'll get a glimpse of the past (Victoria's knees restored) and the future (wild adventures around the world!). We hope you enjoy the change of pace!

After the Portlight Trilogy Conclusion, we thought we were done but like any good reboot. The Portlight Strikes Back. We finally finish the frameless portlight refit. After what felt like an eternity, we have finally began the interior of the frameless portlights. We installed them nine mouths ago, but never finished the interior. Porsche 3.2 Carrera Engine Installation - Porsche Carrera Rebuild #PorscheRebuild #PorscheRestoration #Porsche3.2Carrera Hi Everyone! We are back on our 1986 Porsche 3.2 Carrera! Whoohoo! Today we finally get the engine re-installed in the car, BUT... Holy cow... The weather turns partway through the project with sustained winds past 75mph with a max gust of 95mph! That makes things entertaining :) If that wasn't enough, I get to battle a large and very dangerous grass file that almost got the houses across the street. While I was dealing with the fire Heidi was evacuated by order of the fire department. It was a day not soon forgotten. Enjoy! What happens when 2 Sailing Channels meet in Eleuthera? Well there's a lot of Fun Adventures. While exploring Rock Sound we ran into Sailing Vinyasa, another young sailing couple consisting of a Norwegian named Therese and an American named Cody. The four of us immediately got along and decided to go cave hoping and blue hole searching. Cathedral Cave was stunning with its tall ceilings and wide open caverns. But we did build up quite the appetite which Therese solved by making home-made pizza that night. Filmed early March 2020. If you like what you see don't forget to give us the thumbs up! Upgrading Lead Acid batteries to lithium batteries on a sailboat requires some research. this sailing video reviews the advantages of lithium iron phosphate batteries - ie LifePO4 batteries, using them on a cruising sailboat, sailing around the world, and the different kinds of lithium batteries to choose between, and the advantages and disadvantages of lithium batteries in general. Lithium battery installation on a sailboat requires a lot of knowledge and research. Rebecca Childress discusses the various choices of lithium ion batteries she examined, the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of lithium battery, from drop in batteries like Battleborn, to a complete DIY lithium battery build to modular units like Freedom Won batteries. Freedom Won marine lithium batteries are the type of lithium batteries she decided to install on her sailboat Brick House. We discuss a Balmar High Output alternator, a Balmar Maxcharge 614 alternator regulator for lithium batteries, Freedom Won lithium batteries (LifePO4 batteries), relays, a Sterling alternator protection device, the Victron Color Control CCGX, and several Morningstar Solar Controllers and the important aspects of these charging systems for lithium batteries instead of the old lead acid batteries. Upgrading from lead acid batteries to lithium batteries on a sailboat DIY need not be expensive, or difficult, but there is a lot to understand about installing lithium batteries. hopefully this informative video will help you learn about the special considerations of installing lithium batteries on a sailboat. Innovation in mainsail technology is used most of the new performance cruising catamarans. We discuss the mainsail technology used on Biotrek, which has DFi sails made by Incidence Sails , France. We discuss the rational for choosing composite sails for a new catamaran, and their sail life compared to Dacron sails. Composite sails are also called laminate sails or membrane sails and most sail manufactures have their own technologies for making these sails from composite materials rather than woven. The video shows removing the mainsail and battens on BioTrek for annual maintenance and then re-installing the battens and mainsail after maintenance completed by Doyle sails.
