That required us to bushwhack our own path and do some offshore bouldering before we finally found our way to the beach. We've spent a lot of time at anchor since the Covid-19 pandemic started in February. Being at anchor means that we get our energy from the generator, in addition to the solar panels. We have been going through impellers at an alarming rate, and Pierre explains the way he thinks he may have fixed the problem, at last. In Bahamas and in Fort Lauderdale we were not able to get spare impeller. In Fort Lauderdale there were none at West marine, and the rest of the more specialized marine stores that would have had them were closed. Without spare impellers, we continued to West Palm Beach to wait for a weather window to go north. Pierre works on the generator once again, and then we leave West Palm to head towards Boston knowing that we can make do, if needed. With the perfect weather window we leave at night for an offshore crossing from Beaufort to Wrightsville, NC. Exiting the Masonboro Inlet turns into a fast sail through darkness as the current rushes us out. Avant de commencer mon récit du 9 avril, je tiens à m’excuser auprès de nos lecteurs des fautes que je peux laisser échapper de-ci de-là. Promis, je vais essayer de faire plus attention ! J’ai traversé l’incertitude en bousculant la solitude, une île sauvage et mystérieuse. Je me suis donné corps et âme pour passer à travers les flammes de ce désir qui m’électrise. Sur une mer qui se déchaine, j’ai dû résister aux sirènes pour atteindre ma terre promise… Nous la cherchons notre terre promise et il semble bien que l’Océan Indien veuille nous retenir le plus longtemps possible avant de nous laisser l’atteindre. À près tout, nous ne sommes toujours pas pressés et le désir d’horizon lointain qui nous électrise est comblé par cette aventure incertaine à bord de notre belle armure ! Là-bas, quelque part, une île sauvage et mystérieuse nous attend…En nous fiant à notre progression de 125 milles cette nuit au moteur, nous positionnant à 9º5'963 Sud et 56º33'896 Est, nous pourrions envisager la trouver à l’Ouest notre émergence. Peut-être même du côté de Farquar, le dernier atoll des Seychelles, à 392 milles ! C’est un truc de fou, j’ai l’impression que ça fait des jours que nous sommes à plus de 300 milles de ces îles dites jardin d’Éden ! Ce n’est quand même pas gagné ! Au moteur, à la limite nous pouvons garder une direction directe mais le moteur va vraiment falloir le ménager car sa dernière impulsion ce matin n’est pas encourageante. En l’éteignant, la manette de commande s’est bloquée et Cyril a dut forcer pour la ramener au point neutre ! Une brisounette de 6 nœuds, nous permet de déployer le gennak et la grand-voile en ciseaux, entre 3 et 4 nœuds nous clopinons un peu plus Ouest-sud-ouest, vers le cap d’Ambre, dit le chaudron de la sorcière ! Faut-il vraiment expliquer ce que cela veut dire ? Allez, juste pour info, près du Nord de Madagascar, lorsque les alizés sont bien établis (ce qui, d’après les dernières prévisions devrait être le cas dans 3 jours), leur vitesse peut être accélérée dans la zone critique au nord du cap d’Ambre jusqu’à 15-20 nœuds et les conditions de mer qui en résultent ont été comparées à un chaudron de sorcière ! C’est étrange comme en mer, la météo peut jouer sur notre moral, bien souvent, il fluctue en fonction de la houle. Le moindre petit détail peut aussi influer sur notre état d’esprits ! Il peut nous enchanter ou nous charmer comme nous abattre et nous attrister. Tout est décuplé, les sens, les émotions, la sensibilité, l’imagination… La fantaisie de nos délires frappe aussi bien dans les nuages, quand un « us » du genre « nimb » ou « cumul » prend la forme d’un éléphant ou d’un écureuil, que dans l’incorporel, quand notre Iridium ne charge plus aucun message ! Que se passe-t-il à terre ? Un bug mondial, un chaos infernal, une extinction totale ! Je vous jure que les divagations peuvent vite rattraper la raison et que c’est bon quand notre boite de réception affiche six messages entrants ! C’est un de nos divertissements, lire les messages. Le soir, une fois le récit de la veille rédigé, nous l’envoyons aux enfants, Jonathan, notre fils, de son petit surnom chouchou et Claire, l’amoureuse de notre fils, dite notre choupette ! Nous attendons toujours avec impatience de leurs nouvelles car pour eux aussi c’est le confinement et notre inquiétude de parents est difficilement maitrisable ! Les nouvelles de la situation à terre avec le Covid 19 ne sont pas réjouissantes mais quel plaisir de lire les petites anecdotes de la famille et les péripéties des amis. Merci à tous … Car ici, les habitants sont discrets ou peut-être se protègent-ils de l’Homme. En bientôt dix jours, seulement quelques marsouins sont passés au loin et un aileron de dauphin nous a fait espérer un show ! La soirée s’annonce douce, la lune de toute sa rondeur illune la grandeur infinie. Sur des airs harmonieux, dans cette fabuleuse solitude, les paroles de grands auteurs sonnent comme une poésie en l’honneur de la nature. Nous nous aimons…

After returning from Chesterfield reef into Bundaberg, we make our way south down through Moreton Bay heading to the Gold Coast. Fixing a valve cover oil leak on a jeep is not a hard project, there are some things we have to look at the could cause it to leak again if we installed the gasket wrong. In this video "Safe in the Virgin Islands" we arrive in St. thomas, USVIs and are accepted by customs into the United States having served our 2 week quarantine since leaving the Dominican Republic and skipping Puerto Rico altogether. We go ashore to pick up supplies then head back to the boat. Deciding it's too crowded we leave for beautiful Megan's Bay and then move on to Christmas Cove. The waves are big, the swell comes from seemingly random directions and the weather is completely unpredictable. All that adds up to a lot of stress for sailors and wear and tear on the boat. For our passage from Chagos to the Seychelles we were in the unfortunate position of having to sail to a schedule. We'd waited for a good weather window as long as we could and when we finally got one, we set sail. Things looked good until the wind unexpectedly died and stayed dead. That meant we had to motor. A LOT. But we didn't have enough diesel to make it all the way to the Seychelles. Not a good feeling! Somehow we managed to sail just enough to arrive in the quarantine zone in the Seychelles and get cleared in. But when we fired up the engines to go to the fuel dock, they sputtered and died. Traveling the ICW on a sailboat involves a lot of motoring but when you get that nice wind and space it's so exciting to sail. We had the perfect weather window to make a jump from Elizabeth City NC across the Albemarle Sound and into the Alligator River. We kept our eyes open for alligators but no luck so enjoyed some sundowners with our friends Scott and Tobi from our buddy boat SV Northern Wind. We did enjoy another spectacular sunrise while at anchor in the Alligator River. Cruising along the Intracoastal Waterways brought us to so many nice places. So how does a cooling system on a marine diesel engine work and how do you dismantle it to clean it? In this mini series of maintenance videos, I take apart the raw water cooling system of our Volvo Penta TMD22 marine diesel engine and quickly learn it's not as simple as it first seemed. In this first video (Part 1 of 3 videos) I dismantle and clean the muffler box, exhaust elbow, turbo and check the impeller and pipes. I also replace the water pump gasket and find a lot of calcium deposits inside the pipes which could indicate potential problems inside the heat exchanger. The journey through the Great Dismal Swamp canal continues. We end up having a very eventful day as we travel more South on the ICW. The duckweed becomes thicker and thicker and causes problems for most boats traveling as one by one we start having our engines overheat. It's a constant battle of keeping an eye on the Raw Water strainer while slowly making our way out of the Dismal Swamp and into Elizabeth City in North Carolina. I was supposed to be taking off the fittings just for a general clean and re-apply some Duralac, until I noticed serious damage. The fitting literally cracked off and the shroud bolt damaged the mast too. Most of the rivet holes are cracked and this is going to be a BIG job to repair this mast. Of course we will be doing it ourselves to save money and learn more about masts and rigging... stay tuned for the ongoing fiasco that is set to be the bane of our season. We use rubber weather stripping that will not only keep pest out, should, and move of a seal to the weather stripping around the door frame.
