We did some random tasks on our boat this week and now we are getting closer and closer to go to the water!! If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. In this episode, Hurricane Nestor I'm So Worried, We untie the lines and leave Nova Scotia for our epic sojourn of the Carribean via Bermuda. We Leave Halifax with a stop in Lunenberg, only to run into Hurricane Nestor in Shelburne Harbour where our 55 lb rocna anchor tried to re-set and we were forced to drive the boat into the storm in a very real fight for our lives... In August of 2017 I sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our YouTube sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and the occasional crewmembers(s) as we navigate the east coast of North America and beyond. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard in a cold climate. I did this on the DC side, the process is basically the same for the AC side. It is recommended you have a professional install any electrical systems on your boat. On this episode of Sailing on a Whim, we finally leave the marina to start our cruising adventure. First stop? The Florida Keys! Lots of preparation have finally paid off and our sailing adventure truly begins. And we absolutely love it! This crazy adventure started in early 2018 as we started researching learning how to sail, buy a boat, outfit her, and take off for a life on the open seas. There has been a huge learning curve trying to make all of this happen and we want to share with you everything that we have learned and have some fun along the way. We are excited (and a little nervous!) to share this journey with you. We hope that you learn a little from our experiences and maybe inspire you to make changes to live the life you want! —————————————————— SUBSCRIBE & FOLLOW https://www.sailingonawhim https://www.youtube.com/sailingonawhim https://www.facebook.com/sailingonawhim https://www.instagram.com/sailing_on_a_whim https://www.twitter.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— CONSIDERING BECOMING A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/sailingonawhim —————————————————— GEAR: Cannon EOS Rebel SL2 - https://amzn.to/2y2Hty1 Cannon Powershot G7x Mark II - https://amzn.to/2S6rOVu DJI Mavic Air - https://amzn.to/2W2OYgz GoPro Hero5 - https://amzn.to/2S8FizU Fantasea Line FG7X II - https://amzn.to/2xSuY8q Rode DDG-GO Deadcat - https://amzn.to/2Y4AT4G DJI Mavic Pro Plantinum - https://amzn.to/3eU5tUT —————————————————— RECOMMENDED READING: Learn to Sail – https://sailingonawhim.com/learn-to-sail Cruising Life – https://sailingonawhim.com/cruising-life Maintenance & Repair – https://sailingonawhim.com/maintenance-%26-repair Inspiration & Adventure – https://sailingonawhim.com/inspiration-%26-adventure —————————————————— MUSIC FROM EPIDEMIC SOUND —————————————————— The Abacos area of the Bahamas was devastated by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Following Simon Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/finding_simon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/findingsimon Website: http://simonstiles.com/ Asking Simon - Who are you? I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats. - Who is Champ? Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza. - What camera equipment do you use? I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights. - What are your vehicles? I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years. Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice. From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran. - What are your plans with the boat? I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come! - How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos? To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: https://freecampsites.net/, https://www.campendium.com/, http://www.atlasobscura.com/, https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - How do you afford your lifestyle? I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy. I make my income almost entirely by creating content for YouTube, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects. - How does your dog fit into this lifestyle? It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities. - How do you make it work as a digital nomad? My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
We have been working on sending tools down to SAILCARGO for a while now and we finally are getting to the point of actually shipping things! With everything we gathered, we had to figure out how to get it down there and not lose anything in the process... so, we built crates to keep everything together while it was shipped down to the in a container. The best part about this is that we got the crew together to help us put this all together! But even better than that was that I, Alix, got to spend my birthday doing something great for an amazing project, with a crew of people I care about. With that done and ready for the shipping container we got to get back to work, but we thought we would do something a little bit different for this video. We invited our editor extraordinaire, Ben Fundis, over to also do some shooting and get a little behind the scenes look for you all to see how we go about making the videos share with you. So, while we worked on the second to last set of oak planks, Ben got some great footage of both, work on Arabella but also work on getting footage for the videos. Something that not many people get a chance to see! We hope you enjoy this little behind the scenes and wish you all some very merry holidays coming up! Speaking of holidays, we wanted to give Ben, who has been working very hard to keep these videos coming out on time every week, a little bit of a break. So... we are going to be taking next week off and be back in two weeks with a new video for you all. Thank you so much for the support and we hope you get to enjoy some quality time with family! All the best from the Acorn to Arabella crew! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Support : Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/CaptainBarry Instagram: SV/Dagon - http://www.instagram.com/svdagon Instagram: Providence - http://www.instagram.com/providencesailcargo Hello! This is the first episode of First Mate And Captain! I really appreciate you watching, I'm not 100% happy with the video, I really want to improve the quality in the future! Better content and I've really got to get better with zooming and focusing! and I need better equipment to help make filming easier, hang in there, things will only get better from here! Also, I have to say, its a bit strange filming everything at first, but it's getting more natural, so the content should start flowing easier soon! A little about myself! I'm the First Mate on Providence Sail Cargo and Captain of SV Dagon! I want to share my life at sea with everyone. Come find out what happens on a 1903 built Gaff Rigged Tall Ship, and a 1956 built cutter rigged Sailboat! As First Mate aboard Providence, I travel weekly on a 4 day cargo run through the PNWs southern gulf Islands, doing that, I meet amazing people, sail a ton, seeing amazing things and my duties are to do maintenance projects, rigging and do my best to keep the boat ship shape! All of which I will share with you! and on MY boat, Dagon, I just fix broken things, break things and have wild sailing adventures! See what it takes to sail and maintain two wooden boats, a Tall ship from 1903 and a Sail Boat from 1956. Hopefully we all learn something! I love what I do and hope you will follow along as we try to push for greener alternatives for shipping local goods and passengers aboard Providence and have good adventures aboard Dagon, and any other boat I happen to end up on. Thank you for watching! I really appreciate it! Captain Barry.
We started the long journey of the restoration of the hatches of our sailboat!! Are you curious? Don't forget to subscribe and to join us every Monday for a new episode!! #skiinginspain #preppers #doomsdaypreppers #sailinginspain After an epic sail through the Mediterranean, from Spain in the West to Turkey in the East (and back again!) - through Greece, Italy, Sardinia, Balearics, Aeolian Islands, visiting ancient monuments and special Islands, we finally tie the sailboat up for winter. Because of medical problems, maintenance issues and general poor timing we've decided NOT to cross the Atlantic this season and instead use the winter to get well, catch up, fix up and mend! We take an unexpected skiing trip up the Sierra Nevada mountain range and catch up with old friends in Almerimar and weather the storms of a another Mediterranean winter! Seamlessly manage your boat's upkeep – let's embark on this journey together! ***** To wrap up our time in Sri Lanka, we went searching for leopards in the absolutely gorgeous Wilpattu National Park. As the apex predator in Sri Lanka, they're pretty chill about hanging out on the ground, but even still, they're hard to find! Even if you're looking right at them! Thanks to our awesome guide, Krishan, we found not only leopards, but the rest of the Big 3 animals in Sri Lanka: elephants and sloth bears. Not to mention all the other amazing wildlife in the park! In this episode of Sailing A B Sea we can say that we finally made it to our winter haul out destination. Yes we finally made it to Livaditis boatyard at Limni on Evia island, Greece. This is where we'll haul out A B Sea for the winter months while we do lots of maintenance and hide from the Mediterranean winter storms. The cost for bridge transit for our 14.15m (46'42) vessel was 35.65 Euros (AU$57.60). For your convenience, we’ve included Amazon links. Installing our Pinion Bearing without a Press could not have been easier. We heated the bearing in the oven, cold the pinion in the freezer, and with no effort, the bearing was on. This saved us money on our Jeep Gear change project because we don't have a press. Go here for gear change playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9vNnMj1ZmcY1OobKHopgTe7UR3p9u9xx We were skeptical this would work, bearing always feel so tight and take so much pressure to get on. When we pulled the pinion out of the freezer, the bearing out of the oven, we just dropped the bearing over the pinion and it was on. Was amazed at how quick and easy this was, did not think the cold would contract the one metal that much, and the oven expand the bearing to easily slide on. See the install of these bearing on our Jeep Mods playlist, we are changing the gears on the jeep from 4.10 to 4.88 because of the larger tires. Our time at the Sugarloaf marina is coming to an end so we decided to throw a potluck going away party on G-Dock with all the people who became such good friends with us. We finish off a couple more last minute projects while we still have access to the dock. And before taking down our mast we decide to take some friends from the marina out for a last sail on Lake Erie. This is the channel video! Support: Patreon - www.patreon.com/CaptainBarry/ Hi, Barry here!
In the last episode, we broke a plank. No big deal though, as with everything we've come up on in the project, the key is just finding a way forward. So we cut the broken end off of the plank and figured out a way to rig it so that we could steam the ends in and get them close to what they were going to be bending to before we actually fit the plank. This process, using a pot of water, burner, some tubing and a length of vacuum seal bag worked fantastically well. Once the plank was warm, we just left the bag in place and just started clamping the plank in place. This way, there was no worries about the plank cooling down as we tried to put it in place after taking it out of a steam box. In this episode, Steve and Joe also head out on a road trip to pick up some of the donations we received for our trip to Costa Rica to help out SAILCARGO in February. Thank you again to everyone that donated items and has helped out with this side project. It has been very much appreciated and we can't wait to see how they react to the amount of tools we managed to gather up for them. Finally, as promised, we are rounding out our merchandise for the holiday season. We have insulated travel mugs ready (in Black and Silver) as well as some small pins with our logo for smaller dollar item. These are up on our website along with the shirts and the sweatshirts (https://www.acorntoarabella.com/merchandise). If you would like your items in time for the holidays, please make sure that you order before December 19th, 2019. Thank you all for the support!!

After having the engine working properly it was about time to handle with some things related to the engine room. The jobs we have done this week were not the cleanest ones, actually one of the jobs were the stinkiest ones so far on the refitting of our sailboat. Have you watched the video of our engine working after many years? If you haven't... here is the link to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ADvPr4RNU If you are new here... we are a Brazilian couple that have just bought a 44ft hot galvanized steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) and is on the mission of bringing her back to life after 22 years abandoned on the hard. Once we are done, the plan is to sail her to our home town Florianópolis so we can finish building our land base, a Tiny Shipping Container House that we are building ourselves without any prior experience. Finally the wind turns so we can sail from Sardinia to Spain and Irenka reflects on what life is like on a sailing boat when you are away from land. We arrive in Formentera and rest before filling up with water and provisions in Ibiza and stay there to shelter from the storm. During the following week, we make the final passage across to mainland Spain and slowly hop along the coast to head South. The wind is rarely in the right direction but we still have a good time finding some great sheltered anchorages and end up in one of our favourite places called Cabo de Gato where we have a last beach BBQ . Because of health issues, we decide to stop in Spain for the winter to get medical treatment and all the boat maintenance jobs done to be ready to set sail for next season. 125F Degree hot water test using $130 budget pressure washer to clean oil off the driveway. In this test, we started at 116F, but then we turned up the heat on our Tankless water heater to 125F to really put the pressure washer to the test. We are really trying hard to break this pressure washer with no success, we now have over 20 hours on it washing our cars, the jeep a few times, the driveway, and front of the house. The hot water with soap really helped remove the oil stain in the driveway. A week later we can almost not see where it was. We did use a broom and dish soap along with the pressure washer and the results were great. We did try to remove an oil stain on the driveway with this pressure washer with cold water and it faded it, but nothing like the results of the hot water. We did use our Tankless Water Heater we installed last year to provide the hot water for this pressure washer. We do have a video on how we installed the tankless whole house water heater below. Since our tankless water heater in the garage in also works great to provide hot water to our project like pressure washing. How to Clean your sailboat bottom (a sailboat hull), under water. These are hull cleaning tips from a professional who has been cleaning boat boat bottoms for decades. Boat owners now how to save money by cleaning your boat bottom / hull in the marina or at anchor, and this should be part of the sailboat maintenance routine. Whether you use a scuba tank to clean the hull, a Sea breathe hookah, underwater breathing apparatus, or just snorkels, fins and a mask, regular underwater bottom cleaning is something all boat owners who want to save money can do. It’s just part of maintaining a sailboat, if you are sailing around the world. Some antifouling paints are better than others at keeping the bottom clean. Coppercoat can offer a solution too, though regular bottom scrubbing, and hull cleaning is necessary even with this...there are no free rides it seems! Boat owners save money by doing regular underwater hull cleaning, but you can also pay a diver to clean the bottom of your sailboat too. But if there are many barnacles on your boat, then it’s probably time to haul the boat, and apply new antifouling paint. Hank Schmitt, owner of Offshore Passage Opportunities, and a professional scuba diver, demonstrates how he keeps the bottom of his Swan 48, Avocation, free from barnacles and other marine growth. He demonstrates cleaning around the waterline by using a suction cup, and then how he uses a scuba tank, that he leaves on deck, to clean the sailboat prop and the sailboat keel. Patrick Childress shows a link to his hull cleaning process with using a 12 volt powered hookah. The video finishes up with some scenes from the hookah cleaning. About Hank Schmitt: Hank owns a company called Offshore Passage Opportunities, a premier crew networking site. He also runs the North American Rally to the Caribbean (NARC) then does the return trip in the spring. Hank has been, for decades, a delivery skipper, successful race boat captain and professional diver and rigger. Well... we broke a plank. No worries though. We got it fixed and back on the boat. That's how we roll here... with the punches and not against them. We got a lesson in how far you can push a plank to bend and from now on will know what we can and can't do in that instance. The are a of the stern where we are now planking has a lot more twist than in most other sections, and although we managed to get the plank in place, we then started hearing some crackling noises. So, Steve worked on replacing and re-scarfing that end of the plank so we could work on getting it back on the boat with only a minimal setback. We are then going to be steaming in the places which require an inordinate amount of twist. So there is that to look forward to in the coming episodes! Remember folks! Molehills, not mountains!
I start the full size boat build of model I designed. This is a step by step video documentation of the build after 11 days of work. It is a unique home build I have been wanting to try and decided to finally give it a go. It is a reasonable project for the DIY home builder with moderate wood working experience and a low overall cost. Some extra things going on include some surfing, art (I start a new painting) and adventure. Enjoy
