Terrifying Storm at anchor ! In this video we sit out the worst storm we have ever seen at anchor, we are in Corfu in Greece while waiting for a flight to arrive carrying my eldest son, in the video we are hit with 80 knot winds and horizontal rain and come close to a collision with another yacht as he drags anchor in the gusts, several boats are damaged and pushed up onto rocks. Ahoy! In this episode, we’re still loving the Corsican coastline and we make our way further South. Lars has a bit of a DIY nightmare, trying to run our wind generator cables through the deck, we lift anchor and had another sweet sail with the cruising chute down to Tizzano. We go to mount our new D400 wind generator, but aren’t sure if it'll fit in the spot we have for it… We dodge some rocks on our dinghy ride into shore, we measure how much wind power we get from the new wind generator and eat some juicy oranges once we reach our next anchorage! Yes, I'm alive. After 8 months of work I was able to launch a new software application that I built from the ground up for my regular job. Now, I can get back to working on my catamaran, it's going to take a bit longer than 8 months before I launch it 😉⛵ as I generally only work on it on the weekends. Do you have the vision to see the Antares 44 "the worlds best live aboard" in all it's former glory? or do you just see a disaster? People like Elon Musk shooting for Mars have vision. We finally did it!! More about Fuel Right: https://www.fuelright.com We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Before we found our dream boat we had another cool project: we were building our Tiny Shipping Container House by ourselves, without any prior experience to be our land base in our hometown, Florianópolis (Brazil). In this weeks episode we take the Falcon dockside here in Carriacou, Grenada to tackle one of the last parts of our DIY rigging overhaul, the forestay. After some interesting maneuvering to get alongside the dock and some confusion amongst the line handlers, we got the boat all tied up. We then immediately got to work dropping down the roller furler tube in order to remove and replace the forestay housed within. Our first hiccup was the all too common problem of a seized and (subsequently) threaded grub screw between the furler extrusions. Thanks to a helpful passerby who happened to have the exact equipment we needed, we quickly solved that problem. Thinking that was the last of our problems, the job continued smoothly until the last step... re-installing the Sta-Lok fitting on the forestay. It was about here that everything went pear-shaped and a 1mm error in measurement derailed the entire job and delayed our departure by weeks... Feel a bit defeated, we went back out to anchor to wait for new rigging to be sent to us. Our silver lining was that even though we couldn't fix our forestay, we picked up our trusty old stays'l from the sail maker who repaired the tear... We're still one step closer to getting outta here and on the water again! How to test engine compression and the tools used to do it. The reason for us doing the compression test was, the jeep is running bad and we thought we had replaced all other parts that could be the cause of our symptoms. Look at our jeep playlist for all the things done to this jeep. Tools and parts: Compression Tester Kit (8 Piece Set): https://amzn.to/2IEEOji Milwaukee 18-Volt Drill and Impact Driver Kit: https://amzn.to/2HfipZ5 268-Piece Husky Mechanics Tool Set: https://amzn.to/3kuGUzD A compression test exposes issues of an engine's valves, valve seats, and piston rings. A healthy engine should have over 100 PSI of pressure, but what I look for more is if the cylinders don't have more than 10 psi between them. Here are the symptoms of low compression and why we took a look. 1. Misfires and Sputters The engine sounds like it is missing, hate it when things aren't running on all cylinders. 2. Poor Power and Performance Well, we were really feeling this, sometimes it was hard to keep the jeep moving. Just losing one cylinder would cut our performance by 1/4. 3. Poor Fuel Economy Our gas mileage was way down, getting 10 MPG, and with fuel prices who want to buy more gas with less performance. 4. Failure to Start As compression goes down, the engine becomes harder to start, starting is really good when you want to go somewhere. What causes low engine compression? 1. Holes in the Piston If this is your issue, you are going to see serious smoke out the tailpipe. Most of the time holes in pistons are caused by pre-detonation, if you hear ping "rattling" get your car checked out quick. 2. Leaky Valves Worn values will cause compression to leak through the compression cycle killing your performance. 3. Head Gasket Failure Blown head gaskets are fun, most of the time I saw head gasket issues it was at a water jacket, that is fun. But if a head gasket is leaking compression you probably will be able to hear it. 4. Bad piston rings Worn rings you will not bleed off compression in the crankcase, but you probably see burning oil at the tailpipe if this is the issue. 5. Faulty Cam, Lifters, Rockers This will be more apparent in compression loss if it is the intake valve. Your cam, lifters, and rockers are used to open the valves. If a cam lobe is worn, a lifter is flat, or a rocker has failed the valve may not open that much or not at all. 00:00 How To Test Engine Compression Intro 01:51 How To Test Engine Compression 08:17 Final Thought And What Is Coming Next Check out our shop on our website for branded gear: https://www.chrisdoeswhat.com/our_shop/ Support us by shopping through our Affiliate Links! Its that time of year when the weather turns cold wet and miserable which means its also the time to get Daphy out of the water. Its a chance to dry her out, do some of that boat maintenance stuff that always needs doing and as being on the hard at MYC is much safer than bobbing around in the Medway its also a much nicer place to keep her when the winter storms blow though. We make these films just for fun, and we hope that you have enjoyed watching them however we have been asked on a couple of occasions now if we have a Paytreon account. Its time to change our fuel filters aboard SV Lost Cat! We have 2 diesel engines on or 43' sailing catamaran and I change out our fuel filters every 2 fill-ups, or every 250 hours. That equates to about 125 gallons of fuel that has run through each filter - and it shows. Not only do I change out the filter element, I clean the collection bowls. Organisms actually grow in diesel fuel(!) and builds up sludge in your fuel tanks. Along with sludge, water can build up through condensation and this is also filtered out in the Racor turbine fuel filter. You can buy a pack of 12 on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3ks0BI6 In this video I show how to change out the filter element, clean the bowls, and give tricks on how to avoid air in your fuel system ( that's bad). In no way am I a professional mechanic and I am sure there are other techniques, but this is how I do my filter changes. All hints and tricks are appreciated so everyone can get the most from this video. Thanks for watching, Captain James Cognito SV Lost Cat

As we continue working on Arabella, we look ahead at starting to figure out the power plant. We got a beautiful new engine from Nanni Diesel last year and now we are back with Brook Streit from Kraft Power to talk about some of the intricacies of getting that diesel engine fit perfectly to our needs. Now is the time to start thinking about all these things as it will help to have them in mind as we build out the interior. We have an opportunity to work everything into one cohesive idea, as opposed to fitting the engine to a predetermined space. So, we talked about hookups, water intake, through hulls, batteries, etc. This laid the groundwork for us to talk further and come up with a plan down the road for a complete instal Yep! We'll likely see them in the future to help hook it all up, which we are very much looking forward to. We also would like to let everyone know about a couple of things. First of all, we are giving Ben a very much deserved break from video editing next week. He's been doing a fantastic job for the last year, cranking out great videos week after week and we'd like to give him the same opportunity as us to take a much deserved breather. This means there will be no video next week (November 20th, 2020). Speaking of vacations, Steve just headed out to the desert to go climbing with a friend and get a much needed break from the work here at Acorn to Arabella. He'll be back shortly and in the meantime, Alix will be working on getting Victoria's knees installed as well as fitting lodging knees and short beams. Finally, if you'd like to help out the project right now, a good way to do that would be to support by getting your very own limited edition Acorn to Arabella tshirt. We currently have a campaign running through Bonfire until the 19th of November 2020. They will ship shortly after that (so they should arrive by the holidays!). The design was drawn by our good friend Scott Ouderkirk from the channel Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) [ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w ] and is a drawing of Arabella with her deck framing in. If you are interested in one of these shirts you may purchase them here: https://www.bonfire.com/acorn-to-arabella-winter-2020/ Links to Kraft Power and Nanni Diesel: http://www.kraftpower.com/ https://www.nannienergy.com/ Thank you all for watching and for supporting Acorn to Arabella! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro Illustrations by Scott Ouderkirk from Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

Winter is coming, or rather, is here and it's snowing! Are we ready? is our sailboat, Ixion, ready? Winter sailing is not for the faint of heart! After landing in New Bedford, we jump straight into projects hoping we would be gone before it started snowing. Well, we missed that window and now we are asking are we ready? Is our sailboat ready? It starts snowing, and we aren't ready. We rush to get a heater on our sailboat to keep us, the batteries, and the freshwater warm. Also, it's only October and its snowing! Once we complete this task, and prepare for the cold, we will be ready to finish our projects so we can head south away from the cold. Thank you all for watching, new episode every Thursday. Boatbuilding can be a slow and tedious (yet rewarding!) process. As with many things in life, patience is a useful skill. In this episode, we work on making up more short beams out of the scrap locust we have. This involves sorting through what we have, cutting them out, planing them and cutting the carlin joints on the end. While Steve works on that, Alix takes on fitting Victorias knees that he restored previously. This involves patterns and some slow but satisfying fitting work. As we continue working on the deck structure, we have the interior in mind. Kitting out the interior and starting to figure out Arabella's systems is going to be a pricey endeavor and to help bolster the funds to get Arabella the best she deserves, we are unveiling another limited edition Acorn to Arabella t-shirt. Our friend Scott Ouderkirk from the channel Glass Goat (The Wooden Boat Experience), came to draw Arabella from above with her deck structure in place. If you would like a shirt showing off this beautiful illustration, you can order oner here! http://www.bonfire.com/acorn-to-arabella-winter-2020 Scott Ouderkirk from the channel GLASS GOAT: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu02y4RfEyiHqjTCaYpeq4w Thank you all for the support! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are interesting in supporting/helping here are a few ways: Acorn to Arabella wishlist: http://www.acorntoarabella.com/acorn-to-arabella-wishlist Jamestown Distributors Referral: If you are going to shop at Jamestown Distributors, please consider using our Total Boat referral code: http://totalboat.refr.cc/steveandalixa?t=tg Recurring support via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Original Soundtrack available at benfundis.bandcamp.com FOLLOW US: Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/acorntoarabella Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/acorntoarabella/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/acorntoarabella Website: http://www.acorntoarabella.com

New Bedford here we come! We leave Mattapoisett harbor behind and start our journey south. First Stop is New Bedford to finish up some boat projects before finally heading south. Our refit isn't quite done yet, so a slip is what's in order to be able to finish the last few projects before snow falls and freezes us. What starts as a simple short sail ends up being a bit more frustrating than originally thought to be. Watch to find out what happens. Hey there Friends! So in the last video, we were hit with the reality of Covid and we decided that sailing offshore and continuing our trip to New York was far more safe then staying near land. We make it to clear water for a day to reset laundry and then we were off for some snorkeling and swimming at Caladesi Island. Music is provided by Artlist Check out our instagram for more day to day content www.instagram.com/sailingspyridon.com We are also building a platform for DIY kind of boaters to get together and exchange services for services and eventually set up meetups and flotilla events :) So add us on Facebook for more information. Clearly, we won't be doing any of this until this retched virus goes away but we are building the blocks now! Add us on Facebook here! https://www.facebook.com/groups/335116147637710/
The new isla 40 sailing catamaran looks like another winner by Fountaine Pajot. Her inverted bows, the innovative saloon where the chart table adjacent to the entrance gives way to a “total relaxation” lounger, her performances and habitability (3 or 4 double cabins + an optional crew cabin) combine to make this new model an exceptional catamaran. For additional information regarding this vessel, please follow this link: https://www.catamarans.com/new-sail-catamaran-for-sale/2021-fountaine-pajot-isla-40/brochure-fountaine-pajot-isla-40/103774 We invite you to subscribe to our channel. New insulation, some new hoses, water, additive... almost a new engine room. We’re Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that have bought a 44ft steel sailboat (Dinieper Tropic 1200) that was abandoned on the hard for 22 years in Guarujá, Brazil. We are on the mission of refitting her to travel the world taking our house with us! Are you curious to know more about it? What happens when monohull sailors sail on a catamaran for the first time? Rather than sail south with the Salty Dawg Rally, we are sailing in New England in November on a delivery with sailor friends, something we had not planned before Pierre’s injury. For our friends, monohull sailors, this is their first sail on a catamaran, with their comments and comparisons. With friends on board, I have more chance to film some sailing – rolling sails, and Ivan explains a shortcut on the B & G. This was a 2-day sail from Charlestown marina in Boston to the New England BoatWorks Marina in Rhode Island with variable winds, allowing us to try our sail inventory. We tried to catch fish, but without success - although we had excitement when a seagull took the line.
