It seems ridiculous, but it’s the reason we worry so much about our boat. It’s the reason we agonize over every little decision about maintenance and upgrades. Our boat is too nice. When we bought our boat, the surveyor declared it to be in Bristol condition. A 38 year-old boat! The previous owners took immaculate care of her, and now the torch — to care for this beautiful piece of nautical history — was being passed to us. Oh but it’s just a boat. That’s also true. We haven’t babied her as much as her previous owners, for the plain facts that we’ve lived aboard full time and introduced her to harsh saltwater. But we’ve done our best to preserve her original glory while also doing the necessary things to keep her seaworthy and suit our cruising goals. How much do we have to rip apart to make necessary repairs? is the question we wrestle with in this episode. We’ve got a chainplate leaking into the deck, and there might be more. We know there’s some rotten deck core, but how much? We don’t know without tearing things apart. How much worse does it need to get before we can start to make it better? How to install a 1-inch transfer case drop in minutes to alleviate drive train vibration on lifted jeeps and trucks. Not a long project, but you could also have to modify your transmission house because you can't shift. First, you want to get a jack and put this under the transfer case mount to help support the weight. Then lose the bolts on one side just enough to allow the other side both the mount one inch of room when you take out the bolts. Then repeat the steps for the other side, be sure that you tight all the bolts once both sides are complete, would hate for this to fall off on the trail. There are a lot of exciting things coming together at the moment. Steve installed the rest of the tie rods, Alix finished the sill for the deckhouse to sit on and we made a mockup of the cockpit! One task completely finished, one setting us up for the deckhouse construction when temperatures warm up and the last so that we can visualize the space the cockpit will occupy. The key to staying happy during a 5 Day Lockdown on our small 33ft sailboat is to stay busy. Thus tearing apart the Yanmar 2GM diesel engine to try to see what's really wrong with it. All the uncertainties of the world during the pandemic make it so we are not really sure where to sail next. So figuring out what parts we might need or if the engine is even salvageable is key. But before the lockdown start we manage to get on land at Black Cay one last time to do some yoga and stretch our legs. We even do a fun game of underwater tic tac toe with our friends Therese and Cody from Sailing Vinyasa. filmed early April 2020. Captain Stephen recently noticed some milky colored oil in our sail drive, when changing out a leaky O-ring. So, back to Thunderbolt Marine in Savannah - closest place that can haul out boat out of the water. What did we find? Fishing line wrapped around the prop tightened up and cut through the seal. WWWilliams did the sail drive seal replacement and also replaced a couple bearings. This repair job was pretty efficient. Out of the water at 730AM, repair done by 2PM, back in the water next day at 730AM. Back in business. Thanks all! In certain places cruisers have a difficult time finding somewhere to refill their cooking gas bottles. We use less cooking gas with an electric hob. Cooking with an electric hob when shore power is available doesn't create excess condensation inside the boat during the cooler months, when you're more likely to be in a marina or harbour where shore power is available. With the cyclone season closing in, we perform a few items of maintenance repairing window leaks and freezer fixes, then begin heading south. We have found several moments during the build of Arabella that are just incredibly satisfying. Getting the lead keel poured, getting the backbone assembled, standing up the molds, steaming in frames, getting the first planks on... etc. And now there is one that really feels good and sparks the imagination. We get to work on a mockup of the deck house. We can finally get a real idea of what the interior space of Arabella is going to be. This means that we can start planning things out in earnest.
