However, when we removed it we noticed that we had a leaky idler and the water pump was also showing signs of wear too. So in the end we replaced not only the timing belt, but the idler pulley, the tensioner pulley and the water pump.. and ended up staying way longer than we anticipated. Even though Porto Christo is one of the cheaper marinas in Mallorca, it added a further €355 to the cost of €2230 for the entire job and we're extremely grateful to one of our patrons who helped towards the cost of marina fees and the work. Thanks also to Peter Kukloc from 'Yacht Concept' and Torsten who kindly let us film him and bombard him with loads of questions while he worked. Note to self: Source spares BEFORE work starts and choose cheaper marinas! Part way through the build of Arabella, we were told about a boat we should look at in Mattapoisett, MA. Although we didn't need another boat to restore we decided to go take a look and see what she had for parts. Ultimately we fell in love, she was a wreck and would have been a handful to restore but she had character and more beautiful bronze than we could have imagined. We decided that if she didn't get snatched up for a repair we would get her before she went to the scrap yard and that we did. That boat was the very first boat we have owned and we spent many a days and nights aboard (on the hard of course) dreaming about where our project would lead. She kept us going through some hard times and just like the giving tree, she has given all she could. We salvaged as much as we could from that old boat with the plan to incorporate much of her soul into Arabella. We are now at the point where we are restoring some of her knees to instal under the deck carlines to support the house top. While I work on restoring Victorias knees with a could laminations, Steve works on pulling out the deck framing so that it can get sealed and varnished before being reinstalled for good. After a series of electrical failures, we began wondering was our electric sailboat motor a mistake? Are we ready to be an electric sailboat? After months of working, including removing the Atomic 4 Engine out by crane, we felt like we were at wits end when a series of electrical failures happened back to back. Sailboat life couldn't get any better even without an engine. Eleuthera Island enchanted us right away with its natural wonders. Cory climbed all over the limestone formations of The Cow & The Bull. Further along the Queen's Highway our breath was taken away by the Glass Window Bridge. On one side 80-foot cliffs dropping into the rich deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean contrasting against the Turquoise water of the Great Bahama Bank. The following day was a great personal accomplishment as we sailed through the narrow channel leading into Hatchet Bay surrounded by 30 or so sailboats and dropped anchor under sail. But we're on the move. We are surprised to receive an email from a couple of Cruising Kiwi followers, inviting us to join them for dinner at The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. So, we leave the hustle and bustle of life anchored in the big smoke of Brisbane, and start our journey south to The yacht Squadron Marina to be hosted by Anton and his wife Gabi. Meanwhile, Declan injures himself, again, kite surfing, we do some boat maintenance and Rob almost misses his Air New Zealand flight and dinner! In 1997, after a disastrous Olympic rowing campaign, Rob decided to row a seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. Skip forward to 2014, we invested in Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Robert's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with our three children, Finn 17, Declan 15 and Ivan 12, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world, meet the locals and record our adventures. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. How to replace the fuel filter, and where they hide it on most cars including this Jeep. The location of the fuel filter on most cars is on the frame near the gas tank. The tools for this job is very minimal with a wrench, pliers, and screwdriver, you can probably get this job done. The total time out of your day to change the fuel filter is about 10 minutes, minus cleaning up fuel spillage and getting the gas smell off you. My wife always says I make things harder than I should, she is right. So the fuel filter on the fuel line is the most common thing to get clogged, there is also a strainer in the fuel tank. Why we look at the filter first is the stainer is in the gas tank, not easy to get to. Also, the strainer is just that, a strainer, it is less likely to clog unless you are just dumping mud in the tank, plus it cost more just for the part. 5 things that can point to a clogged fuel filter: Reduced Engine Performance When you hit the gas and your car feels like it is about to fall on it's face, this could be a clogged fuel filter. You end up starving your engine of fuel and the ECU will limit engine performance to prevent engine damage. Hard Starting This is more than likely not your issue, if the fuel filter is causing this issue, you have had the above issue for quite a while Stalling While stalling could happen it is rare, if your car stalls because the fuel filter is clogged, the above issues have been haunting you for a while. Random Misfire or Rough Idle If you have low fuel pressure the fuel filter can cause this. We do test our fuel pressure for this jeep, and I woulda filter issue to mostly affect unregulated fuel pressure. Fuel System Part Failures A clogged fuel filter may overwork your fuel pump causing pump failure. Your fuel pump would end up having more internal pressure, not a good thing. On another note, your fuel pump also uses fuel to cool the pump, better to ride on the top of your tank than the bottom. We start working on cleaning up and varnishing the deck beams as well as restoring some of Victoria's old knees which will support the deck at the house top. When everything just breaks seemingly at one time, you can lose your mind a little bit. After all the work to convert Ixion to an electric sailboat, this set back is frustrating. We are finally reaching the end of our long stretch, and getting ready to move onboard. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned when two large storms blew through, causing damage to our dodger and solar panels. To top it off, we begin to experience electrical issues that gets in the way of charging our batteries. With a broken solar charger, we can't run our electric motor. We sail in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of New Jersey. We duck into Cape May and motor through the C&D canal. Afterward, we anchor overnight. 5:00 Welcome to Annapolis We arrive in Annapolis to lots of boats and kiteboarders. We visit relatives and check out cool new catamarans and monohulls during the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October. We enjoyed the boat show, picking up some much needed (and not so needed) items at great show deal prices. We purchase a life raft, paddleboards, and some more safety gear. 6:33 Goodbye Family After the boat show, our family left with our last big possession, Curtis' car. We sold it to his parents as we wouldn't be needing it for a long time. 9:24 Haulout at Jabins We decided to make an un-planned haul out and do some boat projects at Bert Jabin Boat Yard. Initially, we wanted to do this boat work in North Carolina or Florida, before proceeding on to the Bahamas, but Jabin's is a top-notch yard with some of the best in the industry. We knew we would have access to the resources to complete the projects we wanted and they had space they could fit us into. 11:32 Boat Work We re-wire and optimize the electrical system for LifePO4 batteries, moving the battery bank to a centralized location. We do some bottom work and paint touch up. We install a line cutter on the propeller. Check the rudder quadrant, install new rudder bearings, and refurbish the autopilot. We pull the mast to install an inner forestay for a cutter rig staysail option. We also take care of many small projects like marking the anchor chain, etc. There are lots of trips to West Marine. Most notably we met some amazing people and new friends in Annapolis. We loved it there!!! The last 3 years a lot has been invested in refit and maintenance works, with the result that this yacht is in great condition.
