BoatUS Magazine's associate editor Mark Corke shows you how to prepare your boat if it needs to ride out a hurricane in a marina. Items include removing valuables, portable electronics, and paperwork, removing anything that could cause windage: covers, biminis, sails, and so on. Remove anything from deck that could blow away. Tie down your rudder or keep outboards in the up position. Take pictures of your preparation and hull identification number. Turn off boat electric except for the bilge pump. Close any seacocks, except those needed for cockpit drainage, and cover scuppers with screens to keep out debris. Remove the shore power cord if you have one and take it home for safe keeping. If your boat is out of the water, remove the drain plug to allow water to drain. Tape up hatches. With good preparation, you'll be able to minimize damage to your boat -- and to others -- during a hurricane or storm. We use the north westerly winds to continue our journey south down through the Capricorn Bunker Group in the southernmost part of the Great Barrier Reef. We land our biggest Queensland Spanish Mackerel yet under spinnaker. On arrival at Lady Musgrave lagoon we explore the entrance with snorkels and the next day we anchor the yacht outside the reef to free dive with sharks and turtles! This video filmed in March 2019. After months of sitting out storms and strong winds, we get a favorable weather report to head out to the Great Barrier Reef. Our first stop is Fitzroy Reef in the Capricorn Bunker group, a reef lagoon anchorage offering world class diving and fishing. Troy talks fish and where to find them, we go snorkeling along the pass into the lagoon, as well as, deep free diving and spearfishing on the outer edge of the reef in 14 metres of water. This week on Sailing GBU we explore our new home. We walked with our friends to the beach and checked out an abandoned Resort. The resort was miles long and seemed like it wasn't that old. While sailing Cuba’s Southern coast, we haven’t been able to provision for over a month! Our fridge is almost empty, so we decide to take the difficult route to Cayo Largo (our final destination) to attempt to spearfish a remote reef. On the way we struggle to anchor overnight in a bug infested mangrove cut and experiment with some new anchoring techniques. After a muggy, sleepless night, we hoist the anchor and try not to get stuck in the mangroves again. Will all this trouble be worth it? Did you like this video?
