After a hurricane -- or any storm -- you are probably anxious to check out your boat. Mike McCook, Field Operations Manager for the BoatUS Catastrophe Team, walks you through the steps you should take once a storm has passed and you can access your marina. The first step is to get in touch with your marine insurance company immediately. This will make them aware that your boat might be affected. If your boat is insured with GEICO|BoatUS, even if you cannot access the boat, the CAT team will be made aware of its location and can go look for it, get the claims process started, and make arrangements for any salvage needed. If you can safely access your boat, do not start any repairs before the insurance surveyor is able to come out. If there's something you can do safely to minimize further damage, document anything done. Taking photos is very important as documentation. Even if damage is minor, contact your insurance company immediately. It will get the process rolling, get your boat fixed faster, and make sure you can get back on the water as soon as possible.
