With 25 knots registering on the committee boat the Laser Slalom 2011 fleet hit the water for the wildest ride on the Bay, the St. Francis Yacht Club's Heavy Weather Slalom event, presented by Maclaren, LaserPerformance and Svendsen's Marine. The talent-stacked fleet included international competitors from 18 years old to 70-something, with anything from 40 years Laser sailing experience to six years. With no room for error in this double elimination regatta, spectacular - and frequent - crashes throughout the fleet made for tense moments on and off the course. Scott Ferguson took first prize for a phenomenal crash in his last race that catapulted him some two boat lengths off his stern. "I needed to jibe, I got a huge puff and was just not going to make the jibe. Making the jibe is the difference between staying in the race - or not! It was a lot of fun." Watching competitors' rapid fire maneuvering and hiking demonstrated just how intense it is in the Slalom just to make it around the course unscathed. And that's what Laser sailors love about it. Olympic Gold Medalist and Team Maclaren Ambassador Anna Tunnicliffe had this to say, "I loved competing in the event. I really like the physical aspect of the boat and how you have to work really hard to make the boat do what you want it to do." Peter Shope and Ben Richardson (both USA) went head to head, with Shope taking the overall first place trophy after four exhausting races. "I don't know where that came from,' said an elated Shope. We worked in that Club Med as Diving GO and Photo-Lab (underwater photographer). This slide-show includes some pictures of my mentor Claude Strobbe (another Belgian dive instructor and photographer). It was used as weekly entertainment for our GM's. The 80's were great years for diving vacations with Club Med. The international team of great GO's made the experience memorable to all! This film is dedicated to all our friends GO and GM! Photo taken in 1985 and put in digital video much later.

Official film made of that fantastic festival of Polynesian Arts. Lucien Kimitete, the maire of Nuku Hiva where the festival was held this time was very charismatic and whoever was lucky to attend the festival kept great memories of it! Not at all a show for tourists but a great celebration for the people from the Marquesas and guest delegations themselves! Presents were dancers from all 6 Marquesas Islands, Tuamotus, Tahiti, Australs, Easter Island, Cook Island, Tuvalu and Hawaii. This festival is held every 4 years. These clips are from onboard the MOD70 Race For Water which is currently lying third in the Rolex Fastnet Race just ahead of her sistership Veolia Environement. They've just gone round the Rock and are flying! These videos showing Steve Ravussin steering the 6.5 ton rocket ship are from the last Friday of Cowes Week when editor David Glenn sailed round the Isle of Wight for a quick demo. We hit 30.7 knots between St Catherine's and Bembridge and despite stopping for half an hour to fix the main hull rudder got round in less than 4 hours. Eight of the MOD70s have been sold for a major world tour of passage racing and inshore round the cans stuff. Watch out for an upcoming feature in Yachting World.
