As a guy who loves taking pictures and video, I was thrilled when I started to see drones coming down in prices over the last few years. It used to be you couldn't touch a drone for a decent camera for under $6K for a crappy one. Technology has continued to advance with smaller camera's capable of really great shots and flight control systems using GPS, Altimiters, a Compas and automatic "return to home" capabilities when there is a signal loss between the operator and the drone. Now, they are near affordable and we had to take a few shots to start to get a unique perspective for our photos, videos and blog entries. This was my first attempt at ever flying anything and certainly there is still work to be done in the smoothness of movements, BUT, I am really happy with the way this is working. As I test the "return to home" features a little bit more I will get more comfortable flying it to its near half mile signal limits. One of the essential tests when designing and building a small boat is to perform a capsize recovery trial. Because it is the first time it should be done in controlled conditions, just in case. So I did it inside a boat house with the boat tied with a long painter.I wore a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid. I am a fat 60year old with a bad back (I took some painkillers before doing the tests), so if I can do it anyone can. The video is 90seconds, in two shots. Yet I manage to capsize and board the Duo twice. The first test you see is the Duo in its rowing version, with inflatable collars lashed to the gunwales (the "dinghydogs" are on order). The boat is very stable, I can stand on the gunwale before it would come close to capsizing. Righting was easy and the boat came upright almost completely empty The second test is of the Duo in sailing mode with wings attached but without the rig. The real sailing capsize and recovery will follow in the next Duo video. Again it was difficult to capsize (I fell in without the boat capsizing). Righting was again easy, as expected this time there was a bit more water in the boat (maybe 20L, 5gal). That's because the wing tubes have less buoyancy and so the boat sinks deeper as it is lighter So all in all a successful test. Tropical Storm BERTHA hits Leverick Bay in the British Virgin Islands, CARIBBEAN! Video also includes some new scenes of Leverick Bay taken by our new "Mariner" Waterproof DRONE! We were supposed to be on our way back to St Maarten this week after finishing up in Tortola, BVI.. but Tropical Storm Bertha put those plans on hold as she approached from our intended direction. We decided to sail to Virgin Gorda in the BVI and secure ourselves at the docks in Leverick Bay Resort in North Sound, Virgin Gorda, which is one of my all-time favorite places to hang out and visit friends in past years. The day before the storm was to arrive we flew our new "MARINER" waterproof drone around the area and captured some beautiful footage of Leverick Bay that you will also see in the 2nd half of the video...
