Dongfeng Race Team, MAPFRE and Team SCA all did accidental gybes (aka Chinese gybes) from Monday to Tuesday – but Dongfeng’s one happened first, in the pitch-black night, and with two young Chinese rookies onboard.

Chinese gybe, aka death roll, aka crash gybe. Basically, it’s a strong squall violently swinging the boom to the other side. The main sail slams over, the boat ends up in the water with the keel on the wrong side keeping it on its side. It’s dangerous, it’s scary – and it happened to the MAPFRE crew in the Southern Ocean, 2,000 nautical miles away from land.

It was an overcast and pretty miserable day that greeted the competitors for the last two races in the wilsonians warm up series but with again a puffy F3 wind it didnt stop people from competing. Izzy and I were assistant race officers so didn't get to do as much filming as normal and with the wind coming from the north the bits we did film were all happening on the other side of the river so its not great. But hopefully it will give you all an idea of how much fun we all had in our own different ways.

It is a lap of the globe starting and finishing in Barcelona (Spain). This is an extreme sporting challenge and ocean adventure that puts human limits to the test. Organised by the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), the regatta is part of the IMOCA Ocean Masters World Championships. The start of the race is on the 31st of December 2014 at 13h00, with the starting line positioned opposite the W Barcelona hotel at the city's port. The finishes are forecasted for the end of March 2015. The boats cover some 23,000 nautical miles in a circumnavigation from Barcelona to Barcelona, putting the capes of Good Hope (South Africa), Leeuwin (Australia) and Horn (Chile) to port (their left) and the Antarctic to starboard (their right). During the three months of racing the skippers make their way through 12 climate zones and cross 3 oceans, as well as sailing in the Mediterranean Sea. The crews race on IMOCA 60 yachts, 18 metres in length. Their masts can reach up to a maximum of 29 metres, as high as a building with ten floors.

The 20th anniversary of the Manly Yacht Club Helly Hansen Women's Challenge was held on March 22 with a record fleet participating. I think we all go through cycles of high and low energy depending on what's going on in our individual lives at the time, and for me the past several months have harbored some challenges I could have done without.. but then it is time to get back to basics and re-learn to remember and appreciate the things we have and the people in our lives that make our days worth living... so when a friend suggested to try a "Grateful Challenge", I gave it some serious thought and decided, why not?! Certainly can't hurt anything and could end up being fun and even a positive experience for some of you that decide to share in it! Some of you will likely be thinking, "uh oh, Rick's losing his mind already", Lol... but I can assure you it's nothing of the kind...
