The mechanical inspection report (view at www.shuswapmarina.com) came back clean with only a couple of small issues. Boat runs and drives very nicely. The command bridge setup gives you a really bright living space, and the versatility of driving from below to get out of the weather, or up top to have the best view possible! Below has been refinished with laminate floors in the main cabin and tile in the head! Some of the electrical has been redone. There's a 9.8hp 2stroke Mercury outboard that comes with the boat and the swim grid is all ready to go with davits installed. There's a propane stove in the galley and a newer toilet in the head. Looks like the insulation of the v-berth will turn out to be a nine part series. Yes, I'm close to being done! Yay! In this episode, I have the pleasure of sanding and applying the first couple of coats of varnish. I hope all of this work will pay off when I move aboard the boat! :) It's been a while since I've had to varnish anything so I decide to start with the back of the slats. The back won't be visible, but I still want a good 4-6 coats on there. Great practice for getting me back in varnishing-mode ;) In part 9 I'll go into a bit more detail about the varnishing :)

Following requests from some You Tube friends, I share a bit about what is going through my mind as we approach the island, a little about AIS system as a follow on to our previous video and some procedures as we enter Port Moselle in Noumea. Of course we have yet to discover much of what New Caledonia offers so this video shows our initial impressions. One such impression has to be the best PROTEST I have ever seen - here were well over 150 trucks and some earthmoving machines blasting horns and clanging tail gates in a violent back and forth motion ... WOW ... this was interesting. I have tried a new program to compress the video file so hope the quality is fair enough. From the shores of Hawaii, and the shores of the mainland the Mega Expedition begins... As part of The Ocean Cleanup, 24 sailboats look to collect more plastic measurements in 3 weeks than have been collected in the past 40 years combined. This is the largest research effort every to asses the amount of harmful plastic pollution in our oceans. Through this mission and other strategies The Ocean Cleanup looks to substantially reduce the amount of toxic plastic in the ocean over the next 10 years. Crews have undergone training, custom made equipment for collection has been installed. And maybe most importantly, young Boyan Slat, the innovator who has masterminded this enormous undertaking, has been suitably blessed in a Polynesian ceremony. The American Sailing Association will be receiving information as it happens from the notorious Pacific Garbage Patch where so much of these plastics congregate. The Ocean Cleanup coordinator, Stella Diamant, will be doing satellite interviews with ASA from the area - detailing what they are seeing and how their historic missing is progressing. The highlight of our cruise this year was to Princess Louisa inlet and the Chatterbox Falls, which are 40 miles inland from the Strait of Georgia, British Columbia.
