Wow! They did it ! A few weeks ago we met an Dutch couple who sail around the Med with their Lagoon 52 GreatCircle. As we planed to be during the winter in Egypt, we invited them to join us for a week there. We didn´t arrive in Egypt, but they follow our invitation and visited us for a few days in Tel Aviv, Israel. We visited Jerusalem and the Dead Sea. Episode 22 Hey guys, This episode is one that’s close to the heart and therefore took us quite a while to decide whether or not to post. We made a pact at the beginning of our journey to share with you, our loyal subscribers, the good, the bad and the ugly. In this episode you’ll see that it’s not all plain sailing (pun totally intended) as we share with you a very important learning curve. We sincerely hope that by sharing this, others might benefit in the future. Below is our decision making process in an emergency but the most important thing to remember is communication of those onboard. We learned a lot about being ‘brave’ and also recognising the seriousness of an issue. Stage 1: At home - “I’d call a doctor in the morning” Offshore - continue sailing and seek medical advice when we arrive. Stage 2: At home - “I’m driving myself to the hospital” Offshore - sail for nearest land and hospital Stage 3: At home - “I need to call an ambulance” Offshore - mayday mayday. We need outside help as we can’t deal with the emergency ourselves. This experience made us think about the above step by step process and we'll definitely follow this in the future. It may not suit other sailors, and that’s absolutely fine, but if it raises a question or kick-starts a conversation with other cruising couples then we’ve done our bit to help! On a lighter note, in true Hayley style she never stops smiling and giving off her amazing energy. After 4 weeks at sea, and with growing concerns for our safety, we finally make the decision to walk away from this crossing. To say we are devastated is an understatement, this had been a dream not many get to experience, and it takes us a long time for it to sink in. Before leaving Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we head out into the hills with Lorraine (who also stepped away) to see as much of the island as we could. Hiring a car we head south and stop off at some beautiful spots, before heading back and dropping Lorraine off at the airport to fly home. Once back in Turkey we head straight for Kejstral, and start the exciting process of de-winterizing her and catching up on some very important projects.
