The boat was produced commercially by Giuseppe Loggia, who fell in love with the design and left his job in the marine services industry to produce the Half Cast 30 commercially. It was produced and sold in Italy. The Half Cast 30 is a medium displacement fibreglass constructed boat withan encapsulated keel (after being laid up as an integral part of the hull, it was then filled with lead). Crocodile Creek in the west Kimberleys Australia is one of the craziest anchorages we have ever sailed to! Up a creek past jagged rocks, sand bars, and a huge rusty ball of steel is a small deep hole underneath a waterfall. Its only accessible on high tide and when the water drains (up to 11 metres) you are land locked and tied up to the cliff face. We enjoyed sitting underneath a second waterfall on low tide and swam in the fresh pools up top! Not for the faint hearted to get up to this place, this is a real gem in the remote Australian lands!! She was recently delivered to her new owners, and had a very busy Fall Season, making her debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show. About a month later, Denison Yacht Sales caught-up with her at the 2019 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, where Alex G. Clarke took us on a walkthrough. The 45-meter YS4508 JOY RIDER boasts a strong semi-displacement hull, constructed of steel, with a superstructure built out of aluminum. Her beam is over 27-feet (8.3 meters), gross tonnage is 315gt, and she offers 120 square meters of deck space that can be used for just about anything. Power comes from a pair of Caterpillar C32 TTA engines and matching Caterpillar marine generators for a top speed of 16.5 knots and range of 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. She can accommodate up to 6 guests and a crew of seven. Her large main-deck lounge is a great place to recount stories of the day, and her touch-and-go helipad make getting to the yacht easy and safe. Keep in mind we bought her at auction without ever meeting the owner! The owner was sailing along and ran aground - hard. Hard enough that the keel pivoted and pushed the aft end up into the hull. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. Floor timbers are a critically important structural member in wooden boats. As we've been building Arabella, there have been many decisions so far in terms of following the original plans or making slight adjustments. Each decision has pros and cons. When it came to the floor timbers, we felt the the wooden floor timbers she was designed with were actually very problematic. Wood floor timbers fastened through split frames cause a hard point and weaken the frame where they are connected. We therefore were pretty adamant about figuring out how to fabricate metal floors for her. Iron was not an option due to the galvanic reactions we have been meticulously avoiding so Silicon Bronze seemed to be the obvious choice. However, casting them was going to be difficult as well as potentially costly. So you gotta make sure you're using it right. The first thing you'll need to do is adjust the squelch. This is pretty simple: just turn it until it hisses, and then back it off until the hissing stops. That will eliminate all the unnecessary static. Tune to the channel you want, and then take the microphone and hold it at a 90 degree angle to your face. Speak slowly and clearly as you key the mike. Okay, now, let's make sure the radio's working properly by doing a radio check. First, tune to a station that's an open frequency, like channel 68. Then repeat three times, "Radio check, radio check, radio check" and the name of your vessel. "Radio check, radio check, radio check, Norfolk Marine Grady-White." Let's see if anyone responds. "Grady White, sounds good." Ah! Sounds like the other guys in the parking lot hear us! In many areas you can now do an automated radio check as well. SeaTow provides the service. I looked on the internet earlier and discovered that channel 28 is the right one for that in this area. "Radio check, radio check, radio check, Norfolk Marine Grady White." "Thank you for using the automated radio check provided by Sea Tow, located at Little Creek Marina in Norfolk." Now you would never do a radio check on Channel 16. 16 is reserved for emergencies and emergencies only. In case of emergency, go directly to Channel 16 and if you have a DSC equipped radio, hit your distress button. Now remember, your radio has to be linked in with your GPS or have an internal GPS in order for DSC to function. In case of a life-threatening emergency, use the call sign "Mayday" and repeat it three times to call the Coast Guard.
