Brady definitely earns some Captain points in this episode! The furler on the Genoa gives out in the dead of the night, right in the middle of a rainy squall which is gusting up to 46 knots!! The squall damages our wind sensor and we have to sail old school through the night by looking at the flags. After getting everything back in working order, we get a little weather lesson from Sean and the crew explores what they miss most while at sea! It can be hard to capture intense sailing moments on Delos at times when it’s all hands on deck, but it was awesome to have Ruben aboard to help capture this experience in detail. Turns out the marina that is storing our salvaged sailboat is very nice and comfortable- problem is they don't allow DIY repairs and don't love that we had 2 dogs. So after last week's drama of getting our slightly leaking sailboat launched - it's time to find somewhere new. We leave the protection of the marina and sea-walled bay and head to a more hospitable yard! This is our first time handling this large of a boat (Beneteau 49) and now we're in the open ocean (although never far from shore)! We can't wait to get started on the biggest project we've ever been a part of. This force cracked the internal grid in several places and broke a portion of the grid free from hull. At some point an inspection was done, insurance was called and decisions were made. This boat we check out is an Irwin 52, a very luxurious sailing yacht in it's heyday, and some still are kept in amazing condition. One of these boats in good shape typically sells for $200,000 to $300,000. This one, however is a gutted wreck. Realistically it could take 10 years and $500,000 to bring this boat back to it's former glory. Is it worth it? Probably not. We came back to this boat after 1.5 years partly due to the amount of people who watched and were interested in the original Irwin video, vlog #31, as well as our own curiosity, We thought it would be interesting to see how our opinions of this boat changed over the last 1.5 years. This Sundeer 64 yacht has a lot to love. In a nutshell she's pretty, performance-oriented, and has plenty of accommodation. In addition she's designed and outfitted for going anywhere. Lastly, she's a reasonable price for a 64' yacht of this quality at an asking price of $549,000. The combination of the aft helms, protected pilothouse, cutter ketch rig, and her fast design make this as close to a perfect 64' as you can get in my humble opinion. She's practical, not flashy, and that's refreshing in a boat this size. Amidst a flooding river of outgoing logs and full on trees we decide to anchor Delos in Bloody Bay- Tobago, or rather because of the torrential weather better known as Muddy bay! After winding Delos through the debris field we find a decent anchorage and it's time to begin exploring the scene in this less traveled part of the world. We soon find out about the Blue Food Festival, which is dedicated to making everything imaginable out of the local Dasheen fruit which turns blue when you cook it. We are somewhat impressed... But not really so we decide to set sail to the East coast of Tobago to begin our diving expedition. On the way we are hailed by a dive boat, we think we’re busted and they’re gonna kick us out of the area but it turns out to be chartered by a fantastic group of Canadian divers that buy us a bunch of beers and take us out on their sweet dive boat for a spectacular night dive. The refit and restoration of a 77ft blue water cruiser http://www.berthon.co.uk/shipyard/yacht-refits-refurb/aglaia/ Aglaia, a 77ft 15-year old yacht designed by Rob Humphreys, was sold by Berthon in the autumn of 2015. The new owner wanted her refitted and modernised; accordingly, a delivery crew brought her north to Berthon’s Lymington Shipyard in October 2015. This is the story of her comprehensive restoration, a project that spanned just 9 months and was completed entirely at Berthon After stripping the interior for bulkhead and headlining refurbishment, it quickly became apparent that Aglaia, which has already done three circumnavigations, could benefit from input from Berthon’s Ross Monson – an experienced yacht captain and large yacht refit manager – who was assigned to the project from the outset. As with any substantial refit work at Berthon, Aglaia then underwent a comprehensive assessment prior to the project plan being consolidated and put in place. This included substantial deck, rig and rigging, electrical, electronics, engineering and hydraulics systems surveys and a full de-store process that lasted 3 weeks. Every item removed was put into an inventory database, logged, photographed and stored. The main areas identified for work were: mast shot blast and painting; hull, coach roof and coamings paintwork; teak deck replacement; full interior refit; new rigging and sails; and marine engineering – motors and pumps, electrical, fridge/freezer and air conditioning systems and new electronics. Berthon employ over 150 full-time skilled staff (including over 20 project managers and 25 apprentices) and as such comprehensive labour allocation plans across all trades jobs are worked up from the outset (and constantly tweaked) to ensure a seamless refit, with maximum efficiencies. Lean management techniques applied by Berthon Project Managers allowed us to average just over 450 hours per week peaking at 900hrs per week to attain maximum productivity on and off the yacht. The standing rigging was inspected on 28th October with the mast unstepped and all fittings removed for shot blasting and subsequent painting. Aglaia was then lifted to Berthon’s M-Shed where preparatory work began immediately, making the yacht safe for work ashore. Here, hatches, winches, tracks etc were lifted in preparation for removal of the teak deck. A good deal of cabinetry and all headlinings, cabin sole boards and other interior fittings were removed or stripped back so that basic systems could be accessed and the necessary re-engineering work carried out. Fixed floorboards were removed in the galley and crew quarters to improve access to fridge motors, air conditioning systems and pumps. All the tanks were emptied at the outset, pressure tested and cleaned. The engineering systems were all surveyed and assessed and a detailed engineering report was given to the owner to make his future decisions on. Just before Christmas I was in Bilgin's amazing facility in Istanbul, where they have TWO 80 meter superyachts in construction side by side. That Vlog shall be published shortly... With the water tanks we need to make sure they are treated properly so that they will be safe to drink out of (we definitely don't want to drink out of raw aluminum tanks!). It's a loooot of prep work, and we end up brining in the pros on this one since having clean and safe water is not something we want to experiment with. The whole process is pretty cool, and it's also an important step to tick off our list before we can move on to the next phase of the build where we can actually start putting in floors, bulkheads, and cool stuff like that! Exploring Central Vanuatu was beyond our expectations. We strolled along coastal roads in Epi, made fast friends with the locals and visited deserted islands in Malekula and for the pinnacle, attended the "Back to Our Roots" festival on Ambrym. The festival is put on for the villagers to help preserve their traditions. All ages participate. It was scripted but felt very real. From the incredible custom dress, to the very beginning where tradition has it that a pig is sacrificed for the sacred Nakimal (house of worship) to the mind numbing rhythmic dancing and chanting. We were thrilled to be invited. For 3 days we witnessed everything from the Yam dance to a circumcision dance and for the pinnacle, the Rom dance. It was an experience we will never forget. It is an experience we are so stoked to be able to share with you. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
