The passages between islands are now on average of about five days each. The weather forecast is ummm.... unpredictable. The passages have been wet, wild and fast! We are well away from civilization out here. Hundreds and hundreds of miles from anything except for this mostly submerged reef they call Beveridge Reef. These reefs are a welcome sight as really help break up the longer passages! And yes, it seems that sometimes at night they are impossible to see. The story of the Catamaran wreck at Beveridge happened in the middle of the night. A full speed collision forcing a British Family onto the reef. Ripping off the sail drives and rudders leaving gaping holes in the aft. But luckily another boat resting inside heard the calls for help via the radio. When morning came they were able to get off the boat and tow it inside the atoll where it rests now half-submerged. As we get further into this season we sail deeper and deeper into the remote reaches of the South Pacific. The further we go, the more adventure we find. More than we could have ever imagined. Three years ago, I went up and down the East coast of the USA looking for a sailboat to buy. With a considerable amount of help and advice from my sailing mentor Don. I purchased this boat in Cape Cod Massachusetts for $23,000.00. At that time the boat was on the hard with it's mast down in an old boatyard miles and miles from the ocean. It was hard to imagine that it would be the boat for me. But after about a month of working with the seller and his broker. We splashed the boat, stepped the mast and sea trialed her. After that, I was confident the sailboat was what I was looking for. But after several major improvements and upgrades I've made during major refits. The boats value is now far greater than when I started. As is it's practical usability can speaks for itself through the adventures I've had and showcase on my social media pages "Adventureman Dan". From this boat I love to explore and go on adventures wherever my anchor rests. The boats name perfectly explains what it represents: -Adventure: (An unusual and exciting or daring experience. Or to engage in daring or risky activity.) -Borne: (Carried or transported by the thing specified.) -Adventureborne = "What brings me to the adventure." This is a humble sailboat. But that is an upside I think. Because unlike most catamarans and other larger vessels. This sailboat is highly affordable and has an extremely low cost to maintain. Allowing me to be able to sail and cruise full time. Without worry of breaking the bank. On top of that, my main expense out here in the Bahamas would be food. But nearly a decade of spearfishing around the world has given me the capability to consistently harvest food from around my sailboat through freedive spearfishing. Allowing me to further extend my time at sea. While feasting and sharing it's bounties with my fellow sailors. In the future I plan to make more improvements and upgrades to this boat. Sailing 7,000 miles over 7 months we finally make landfall in Madagascar! The last few days of the sail have been very hectic though and we wake up to high 30 knots of breeze and 4-5 meter seas left over from the gale the night before. The crew is in high spirits because we made good progress overnight and are only 32 miles away the northern cape of Madagascar! We cruise around the cape making 14 knots of boat speed in 40 knots of wind. It's wicked sailing but soon we are behind the lee and protection of Madagascar and reach Nosy Be where we drop the hook. We're welcomed to the yacht club with all the food we've been craving. Cheap, cold beers and delicious salads and pizza. There's live music, dancing, and a super cool atmosphere. We begin to fall in love with Madagascar. This is our story, a story of three souls sailing around the world. It is a story about sailing, but it's also a story about the fantastic people we meet and amazing places we see. It's a story of people living their lives in an alternate way, in close connection with the beautiful people and amazing planet that we call home. The backbone is bolted together! We finally have some timbers bolted together and what a great feeling. It has been a long journey up to this point, with a lot more to come, but we can finally start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming together. We had to make our own fin head bolts which was quite the learning experience. This project is all about finding different ways around tough situations. We needed a good way to bolt the stem together with a bolt that had a low profile head. As buying them was a bit more expensive than we liked, we figured we could figure out how to make our own. Now that the backbone in together, we are working on setting up the molds and the rib bands to be ready to steam in the frames. That day is coming right up. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. We will be working all day and invite you to come by and watch the frames go in. #136 Join us days from anywhere as we try and figure out what to do about Riley's spinal injury. To say it was an emotional 24 hours is a huge understatement. It was on our minds the entire time and I kept re-living the experience over and over in my head and had to stop to breathe through it. Hectic!. We couldn't stop thinking about what we would do if Riley did need spinal surgery again. With no x-ray machine out there we couldn't be sure what was going on inside there and all we could do is trust Riley's instincts and hope for the best. Visit our boats.com How-To library, and you'll notice that a lot of the topics relate to outboard engines. This shouldn't be a surprise, since outboards have been growing in popularity for many years now. So we decided to ask Chris Breeden, the service manager at Norfolk Marine and a Yamaha Master Tech, which outboard problem he saw with the most regularity. Chris's first answer came without hesitation: fuel systems. Thanks to modern ethanol issues, fuel systems can be finickier than ever. According to Chris, the first step in maintaining your fuel system is the use of a 10 micron fuel filter/water separator. Secondly, he notes that adding a fuel stabilizer to the tank each and every time you fill up is a must. And particularly on smaller, carbureted motors, the fuel system should be drained down every time the boat will sit unused for more than a few days at a time. The first step in this process is to start the engine, and disconnect the fuel line. Then let the engine idle until it runs out of fuel. Next, place a rag under the carburetor and open up the carb drain screw. Once all the remaining fuel has drained away, the engine can sit for several months without any issues. Making sure the fuel in your tank stays good is, of course, a separate issue (for more information on long-term fuel storage, read Ethanol Winterizing Tips). The next most common problem Chris sees is damage due to saltwater use without freshwater flushing. Corrosion and salt build up, anodes melt away, scaling clogs passages and gets into places it doesn't belong, and then you're left with major damage and a major repair bill. In fact, Chris showed us the inside of an outboard that hadn't been flushed regularly and it was a mess—to the tune of thousands of dollars in repair bills.

Episode #256 : Season 9 : The South Pacific Hello Friends, Well the time had finally come to move on and undertake the next big leg of my circumnavigation. I departed Kona, Hawaii after spending 9 months licking my wounds, repairing Triteia and exploring the Hawaiian Islands. The passage from Hawaii to the Tuamotus took 26 days and covered 2323nm, which should be the longest passage of my entire circumnavigation. Karen does the monthly maintenance of changing the 5-micron charcoal filter. After having several guests visit, we discovered that it would be best to have a new electric head. Steve changes out the Raritan electric converted head for a Jabsco push button head with a built-in water pump and macerator. It’s a little loud. We think it will solve the poop problem and make future guests happy.
