Robert Perry is a Hall of Fame sailor and one of the most influential yacht designers of the modern era, widely respected for blending performance, seaworthiness, and practical cruising comfort. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Perry rose to prominence in the 1970s with designs that emphasized strong offshore capability without sacrificing handling or livability. His breakthrough came with the Valiant 40, a yacht that helped define the modern bluewater cruising category and earned a reputation for safety and reliability on long ocean passages. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Perry has designed hundreds of sailboats, ranging from high-performance racers to passagemaking cruisers and custom expedition yachts. Notable designs include the Tayana 37, Baba 30 and 40, Passport series, and numerous custom performance cruisers admired for their balanced hull forms and thoughtful deck layouts. His work is known for efficient sail plans, moderate displacement, and hull shapes that perform well across a wide range of conditions. A last minute decision on the customer end has put me on a time crunch to get this little Westerbeke genset out of my shop and back to the boatyard where it can be reinstalled in their sailboat for cruising season. This thing has sat in my shop for two years and the customers were convinced they would sell it, however they have changed their minds and now it needs to be ready for the boatyard at the last minute so I am scrambling to get the last few things done and ready for them! Today I will replace the exhaust elbow (desperately in need of replacement), and the heat exchanger (also in bad shape) and I will take you along for the ride as I reassemble things!

(자막 ON) 2026년 세계를 한 바퀴 돌고 있는 레이싱 요트 대회가 한국 통영에 기항한다는 소식을 듣고 요트를 보러 갔다. 70ft(21m)나 되는 모노헐 레이싱 요트라니! 처음 보는 웅장함에 멋지다는 말밖에 안 나왔다. 한 배에 18명씩 타고 11개월 동안 세계를 돌며, 통영을 거쳐 시애틀과 영국(최종 목적지)까지 남은 여정을 이어간다고 한다. 중국에서 한국까지 오는 구간에서 1위를 차지한 통영호에 올라 실제 크루 멤버들과 함께 내부를 투어하며, 그들의 생생한 인터뷰와 소감을 들을 수 있었다. 먼바다에서 오랜 시간 항해하는 것은 체력적으로도, 팀워크 면에서도 굉장히 힘든 과정이라는 것을 느낄 수 있었다. 그럼에도... 내 눈에는 너무 재미있어 보였다. 언젠간 나도 꼭 나가볼 수 있기를! 고작 30분의 투어였지만, 짧고 굵게 많은 것들을 배우고 경험했다. 지금도 이 팀들은 태평양을 건너고 있을 것이다. 그들의 건투를 빈다.
