Fast Escapes & Island Days With the Fastnet on the horizon and weather windows to catch, Simon and Tracey slipped away for a short but perfectly timed summer break aboard Dazcat 1495 Hissy Fit. What followed was a quick pre-race getaway to the Isles of Scilly - short hops between islands, relaxed cockpit dining, and time ashore exploring some of their favourite corners. Departing the Helford River, the cruise began with a moment that perfectly set the tone. Simon spotted two boats from his past: a beautiful (and allegedly fast) Nigel Irons cutter, and Dazcat 14 Lady Bounty, perhaps the very first Dazcat he worked on, back when he was still on the tools. Seeing both boats looking so well was a genuine pleasure, and Simon’s quiet delight at crossing paths with his own history was a joy to watch. Out west, Hissy Fit did what Dazcats do best - making the most of short weather breaks to deliver big rewards. Island-hopping, calm anchorages, easy walks ashore and unhurried evenings in the cockpit defined the days. Simon’s boundless enthusiasm for anything floating, splashing or moving with the tide set the tone, while Tracey found her happy place among beautiful anchorages, good walks, and the welcome comfort of a warm cabin when the deck turned a little soggy. A compact cruise, full of all the good bits a holiday should have, and the perfect reminder that even in the run-up to a major race, there’s always time for a little Dazcat magic.

Nous faisons de la belle navigation parfois sportive de Baie-Comeau à l'île du Grand Caoui (25 au 28 juillet 2025). Nous accueillons deux personnes à bord. La jeunesse apporte de l'énergie à bord du voilier.

Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. The Navy ran aground in the harbor before a ship even hit the reef, eventually forcing authorities to string cables across the harbor entrance. On SV Agua Azul, we don't have the luxury of a tow. If the NAVIGATION CHANNEL is obstructed by Navy cables, the logic flow stops. This is the forensic truth of DOMINICAN HARBOR LOGISTICS. . THE REVEAL 🔓 DIY FAILS. To restore the system miles from a chandlery, we spent the weekend troubleshooting local failures. We secured the INVERTER with custom-cut boards so the gear doesn't fall over on passage and executed a forensic fix on a leaking AC unit using DOUBLE HOSE CLAMPS to stop salt water from dripping onto the electronics. This was a sub-surface necessity to keep The Nest operational while the local infrastructure failed. . THE CLIFFHANGER ⏳ 11:36. The situation evolved into a survival risk during the SUPER BOWL. We skipped the WOKE HALFTIME SHOW—refusing to participate in the Bad Bunny narrative—and watched the KID ROCK HALFTIME SHOW on the tablet at the table instead. Snow monkeys, or Japanese macaques, are highly intelligent primates, famous as the northernmost-living non-human primate, surviving temperatures below -20 in Japan. They are renowned for bathing in volcanic hot springs to stay warm and have complex social structures where females remain in the troop for life, with some even leading the group.  The famous Snow Monkeys of Jigokudani are in fact Japanese macaques. While snow and ice storms were wreaking havoc back home in southern Maryland, Fernandina Beach was basking in the 70s. Monica joined us as we drove the short two miles east to the Atlantic side of Amelia Island. Warm air meeting cold seas draped the shoreline in a soft veil of fog. We wandered along the surf in search of treasure—shark’s teeth, unique shells, and perhaps a stray Spanish silver real or gold doubloon from the old treasure fleets. No silver or gold revealed itself, but we did come away with pockets full of shark teeth and a pair of pristine conch shells—a true moment in time.
