A short break in Canal San Pedro to rest at night before heading to Quellón on 4th March. Quellón is a big and busy harbour, especially on a day with fishing boats coming in. Kids bought a gift for Ouma, but it was falling out of the pockets when lifting the snubber from the anchor chain. He went for a swim to rescue it 😄 Now we need to head to our next anchorage Pailad.

Whilst I was waiting to greet our Taster guest on Saturday 18 May 24 in Rutland Sailing Club lounge bar, I was delighted to meet up with Lucy Hodge who was visiting RSC for the weekend. We hit it off and soon discovered we were both in the Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) [not the Civil Service Sailing Club as said in the video] . We had a brief but get talk about sailing , the CSSC etc etc. Turns out there is more to Lucy than meets the eye - inspiring. Check out the video. Welcome to Day 4 of our Christmas calendar! 🎄 Today, we’re taking you behind the aft cabin, where all the magic happens to keep Vela running smoothly. ⛵ Here’s what’s tucked away behind our bed: 🛠️ Rudder & quadrant: This is where the hydraulic steering actuator connects to the rudder, enabling us to steer from the cockpit. While the hydraulic system eliminates breakable wires, it also means less tactile feedback on the rudder. 🔥 5kW oil heater: This keeps our entire boat warm—even in freezing winter temperatures. ❄️ We plan to insulate the heating hoses to improve efficiency and reduce diesel consumption. 🌬️ Ventilation pumps: These service the galley and engine compartment, but they’re old and noisy. Replacing them with quieter, more efficient models is on our project list! 🤖 Autopilot system: Autopilot computer: Powers the hydraulic pump, steering the boat for us. Gyro compass: Provides precise input to ensure we stay on course. This area might not be glamorous, but it’s essential for keeping us comfortable and safe at sea.
