👉 If you’re in the US or Canada and want to charter in the Mediterranean, use the link to start your SLC - https://sailing-blog.nauticed.org/how-to-gain-your-slc-mediterranean-sailing-license?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=_BSf6-8LOOE Do you really need a US Coast Guard Captain’s License to do a bareboat charter? Short answer: no—and in some cases, it’s actually the wrong license to focus on. In this video, we break down what you actually need to charter a boat in places like the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Seychelles. We explain why the USCG Captain’s License is a commercial license (for carrying passengers for hire), not a requirement for private bareboat charters—and why many Mediterranean countries don’t accept it as a valid charter license. You’ll learn: -The difference between a commercial USCG Captain’s License and a recreational bareboat charter -Why many Caribbean destinations don’t legally require a license—but charter companies still demand proof of competence -Why the Mediterranean and Seychelles require a recognized boating license, not just a certificate -Why the USCG Captain’s License is not accepted as a charter license in the Med -How a skills-based license like the SLC (Sailing License & Credentials) fits into Mediterranean and Seychelles requirements -Why your sailing resume (experience, skills, training) is always critical with every charter company -If you’re planning a bareboat charter and confused about licenses, certifications, and what charter companies are really looking for, this video will clear it up so you know exactly what to work toward—both in terms of formal licensing and building a solid skipper resume. 00:00 - What is the USCG Captain’s License 00:16 - Bareboat Charters in the Caribbean: What’s Required 00:28 - Why the USCG License Is Not Accepted in Europe 00:45 - What Licenses is Accepted: SLC Explained 01:00 - What Charter Companies Actually Check Every Time #sailing #boating #charter #bareboatcharter

A full wet bar, complete with 3 x fridges and an icemaker, transforms this space into a genuine living area. A hydraulic Tenderlift allows safe, fast and easy management of her 2023 110hp Williams Diesel jet tender, as well as an uber cool "beach-like" relaxation platform, making water access effortless for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply unwinding at the stern. 'Manaia' was specified with twin Nanni 230hp diesels driving Brunton 4-blade folding propellers. Her 180,000 BTUs of Dometic Cruise-Air is run from shore or one of her 2 x Cummins Generators. Her Raymarine navigation and sailing instrumentation is current and complete. 'Manaia' has been professionally managed by a very experienced crew since handover in France in 2023 and was delivered by the Australian Lagoon agent, TMG Yachts. She is an incredibly well-specified and exceptionally well-cared-for 2023 Lagoon Seventy7 now for sale by her original owners and YOTI. This video unveils the first renders of the Dazcat 1500, featuring exterior fly-arounds and interior fly-throughs of one possible Cruiser model, shown here in an accessible configuration. Built around a single, newly developed hull design, the D1500 platform supports three distinct models: Cruiser, Sport and Racer. Each tailored to a different sailing style while sharing the same powerful foundations. The hull shapes, wide decks and generous interior volumes allow for wheelchair accessibility, making inclusivity a core part of the design rather than an afterthought. What you see here is just one interpretation of what the D1500 can become: a comfortable, capable cruiser designed for extended sailing and ease of life on board. Other configurations explore performance-focused sport sailing and stripped-back racing, all evolving from the same versatile hulls. This is the beginning of the D1500 story — adaptable by design, rooted in Dazcat DNA, and shaped around how people want to sail.

🔧 Paterazzo fisso vs paterazzo regolabile: quale scegliere? Free Nav Rules Course - https://www.nauticed.org/powerboating-courses/view/navigation-rules-for-powerboats?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=video&utm_campaign=zows0zMxJ6o https://neprop.com Thinking about repowering? Do the prop math first—before you buy an engine or transmission. Gear ratio and engine RPM set shaft RPM, which determines the propeller diameter your boat needs. If your hull only fits a 13" prop but your new setup requires 16–17", you’re stuck—and you can’t compensate with pitch. This video explains how to choose engine + transmission combos that match your prop diameter limits so you don’t end up pulling the gearbox back out. What you’ll learn - Gear ratio → shaft RPM → prop diameter (why slower shaft RPM demands a larger prop) - Why you can’t fix a diameter problem with pitch - Common failure cases (e.g., switching from 1:1 to deeper reduction and exceeding prop clearance) - Real-world example: replacing 2.88:1 with 2.5:1 and the maneuverability hit - How to plan a repower so engine, transmission, and prop all work together - Repower Checklist (use before you buy anything) - Measure prop clearance & max diameter your hull can accept - Get target WOT RPM from the engine manufacturer - Decide on gear ratio to hit a workable shaft RPM for your max diameter - Confirm prop options (diameter, pitch, blade count, cup) with a prop shop - Validate dockside handling needs (thrust at idle, gear engagement feel) -Lock the engine + transmission only after the prop is sized on paper - After install: sea trial to confirm WOT RPM, speed, and maneuverability 00:00 - Repowering a Boat: Plan Everything First 00:30 - Engine + Transmission Choice Impacts Propeller Size 00:58 - Gear Ratio / Gear Reduction Explained (1:1 vs Reduction) 01:51 - Common Repower Mistake: Installing Wrong Gear Ratio 02:49 - Repower Checklist: Talk to a Propeller Shop Before You Buy Pro tip: Talk to a propeller shop early. They’ll ask the right questions and size the prop to your hull limits, engine RPM, and gear ratio—saving you from costly do-overs. #sailing #powerboating #powerboat

Chris Kobusch & Sophie O'Neill are longtime friends of 59º North. Chris was in fact one of our full-time skippers for two years on ICEBEAR & FALKEN, and Mia & I recently attended their wedding in England last September. Both professional sailors, they met on the Clipper Race, where Sophie was a last-minute sub-in as First Mate and sailed across the Pacific with Chris. Since then they've led an adventurous life together, working for Skip Novak in Antarctica and buying & refitting their own steel boat OCEAN WANDERER. Like Mia & I, they're now balancing family life with their son Xander, and professional sailing, and recently announced a new project where they'll be building a Wharram 62 catamaran and sailing to the South Pacific. I spoke to them about all of this from their home base on the Isle of Wight just before Christmas. -- Support the podcast & become a member of The Quarterdeck, where Andy, August & Mia dive deep on the art of seam'nship. If you’re doing an Atlantic crossing, it depends on what type of boat you’re in, but it’s basically the same amount of equipment. Start with the base: put your two pairs of dry underwear in a Ziploc bag, roll them up, seal them, and keep them dry. Do the same with your socks, because there’s nothing worse than wet, cold feet. Depending on what size boat, you probably have a little more room if you’re doing a crossing or a delivery, so you can bring two or three technical shirts so you can wash them and have fresh, clean gear. You’re going to want a fleece and a puffer because in the middle of the night when you’re on watch, you want to stay warm. Don’t forget your legs—thermal pants are the best thing to bring across, especially when you know you’ve got to be up on deck for three hours and you just checked the temperature and it’s 42 degrees. Then you’ll have your foul weather gear—your bibs and your jacket. If you were doing an Atlantic crossing, go with a trilaminate fabric because it dries faster if you get moisture on the inside, whereas a coated fabric takes longer to dry. The boat may have its own harnesses, but check with them because you may have a particular inflatable and harness, and that’s what you’re going to wear when you’re on deck all the time—make sure it’s comfortable and fits you. Think about what time of year you’re crossing—if it’s in the colder months, bring a really good waterproof hat that’s a bonded fleece. Having a good pair of gloves is really important—your regular sailing gloves, and then a cold weather pair for when the temperature drops. There is a checklist—talk to whomever you are going transatlantic or transpacific with about what they have on the boat and what their expectation is for what you need to do. And don’t forget your boots—and because you don’t need to wear your boots every day, have a really good pair of sailing shoes as well. 00:00 - Base layer: dry underwear in a Ziploc 00:39 - Mid-layers: fleece + puffer for night watch 01:19 - Foul weather gear: bibs + jacket/smock 01:55 - Harness check: inflatable + harness fit/comfort 02:18 - Bonded fleece waterproof hat 03:00 - Gloves and Footwear #sailing #sailinggear #offshoresailing #sailor

We left Moments in Time tucked safely in Fernandina Harbor Marina and drove back to Maryland to spend the holidays with family. When the celebrations wrapped up and we returned south, we traded Maryland’s biting low 30s chill for Florida’s welcoming warmth in the high 70s. Monica drove up from Jacksonville to spend the day with us, and together we wandered to the Amelia Island Lighthouse, taking in the sweeping views and the old oaks draped in Spanish moss like nature’s own lacework. From there, we headed to Fort Clinch, exploring its grounds and historic brick corridors before the rising temperatures—now in the 80s—pulled us toward the beach. We ended the afternoon combing the shoreline for shark’s teeth and other small treasures, the kind only the sea decides to share. As the sun slipped below the horizon, painting the sky in soft golds and purples, we made our way back to Moments in Time for the night. It was one of those rare, perfect days—a true moment in time. Our journey continues, and we invite you to share in the adventure. Subscribe and share the adventure! Unboxing the EPRIB Tron 60AIS from Jotron. What is in the box? How do you use this EPIRB? What documents do you get with the EPRIB? How do you fix the EPRIB to the boat? We bought this EPIRB from the Norwegian retailer Seatronic. As far as possible we buy all our maritime products from Seatronic. We have very good experience with them, and they know their stuff. Here is a link to the product: https://seatronic.no/jotron-tron-60ais-nodpeilesender NB: No affiliate, just an honest review. Here is a link to the manufacturer Jotron, still no affiliate: https://www.jotron.com/products/maritime-communication/epirb/tron-60ais-with-manual-bracket The last link is to myself, since I work as a yacht broker. Please take contact if you want me to sell your boat: https://sailing-maja.com About the Jotron EPRIB: The Jotron Tron 60AIS is an advanced EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) with built-in AIS and GPS. It comes with a manual bracket and is designed for manual activation. It transmits vessel information via satellite with highly accurate positioning. Features include Galileo RLS support, powerful strobe light, and IR (infrared) light. Minimum 48-hour operation time and a total battery life of over 11 years. Approved for use on ships and fishing vessels. The Jotron Tron 60AIS is an EPIRB with GPS and AIS. This version is mounted in a bracket and intended for manual activation, but it will also activate automatically upon direct water contact if removed from the bracket. To activate manually: Remove the EPIRB from the bracket, pull the release tab, and slide the switch to the ON position. The strobe light will then start flashing, indicating the device is active. The EPIRB features both visible white strobe light and infrared (IR) light; the IR improves visibility for night vision equipment and search-and-rescue (SAR) operations in darkness. Key Features Approved to the latest EPIRB standard (IEC 61097-2 Ed.4 and compliant with IMO/SOLAS regulations as of July 2022) AIS target-tracking/homing technology for faster localization by nearby vessels Return Link Service (RLS) via Galileo GNSS IR LED light for night vision devices and assisted SAR Excellent visibility with a powerful top-mounted strobe light (360° coverage) Tamper-proof design Compact and robust build Total battery lifetime: 11 years and 3 months Weight: 715 g (approx. 700–715 g depending on source) Operating temperature: -20°C to +55°C Storage temperature: -30°C to +70°C Safe compass distance: 0.8 m Material: Glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate Antenna: Flexible, rubberized with integrated strobe GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite System (supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo – 72 channels) What is an Emergency Beacon? An emergency beacon is a simple radio transmitter with worldwide range that, in a distress situation, is activated manually or automatically to send out a distress signal. In Norway, the signal is received by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (Hovedredningssentralen). EPIRB An EPIRB (Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon) is a vessel-mounted distress beacon registered to the boat along with its VHF MMSI number. It transmits vessel details and precise position via satellite. The Tron 60AIS EPIRB includes built-in AIS and GPS for extremely accurate positioning. It also emits a powerful strobe light to aid in locating the distress site. Additionally, the Tron 60AIS features IR light, easily detectable by rescue helicopters and similar assets. An EPIRB typically operates for at least 48 hours after activation, with battery life usually ranging from 5–10 years. On the Tron 60AIS, it exceeds 11 years. The expiration date is stamped on the unit, and it is critical to return the beacon for battery replacement when due. Manually activated EPIRBs like this are typically placed near the stern deck exit or, on sailboats, on the pushpit at the stern. The Tron 60AIS is also available in a float-free version (Category 1) that is placed externally; it features a hydrostatic release unit (HRU) and will float free and activate automatically in case of sinking—but can of course also be manually activated if needed. Best regards from Charlie and the Team Sailing Maja
