Taking my first Southern Ocean leg on the Velux Race as a framework I share observations and learning that came from that 6500Nm, 40 day, solo voyage and the sights and sounds that stick with me from that first nervous foray into the wilder stretches of the world ocean. From escaping half acre kelp patches that stop the boat to coping with Christmas alone I explain what it is to sail around the bottom of the world for the fist time and share some of the uniques sights that only a handful of people get to see like the huge Albatrosses that hover over the boat for days on end. As always plenty of personal anecdotes are mixed in with real world practical experience that cannot be learnt in any text book anywhere. We were lucky to meet Clem and to discover the amazing school he created on his tiny island. We spent a few days and had the opportunity to give intro to scuba to some of the students as well as to bring our 3 Schipperke dogs to the school to show kids how they can also train the islands puppies. We extend our sincere thanks to the George Hansen Estate for their generious funding. Through their support, we were able to reach out to six schools across the Northland region. A total of 142 Northlanders had the opportunity to sail with us, they gained firsthand experience of life aboard a sailing vessel, explored local islands, connected with their heritage, and developed a deeper understanding of marine conservation. Throughout these journeys, students thrived and fully engaged in various activities, including dawn swims, beach cleanups, and multiple dolphin encounters. The trips sailed around the stunning Bay of Islands, with every group visiting Percy Island. Students explored the caves of Urapukapuka Island, collaborated with Project Island Song on weed management, cleaned remote beaches, hiked the Moturua Island track, and witnessed the beauty of dolphins and whales. We are deeply grateful for the support we’ve received and excited about the opportunity to continue empowering young people in Northland through these transformative sailing experiences.

Jazz is terminally ill with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and is a full-time wheelchair user. After 28 days sailing around the UK and Ireland single-handed, non-stop and unassisted, Jazz arrived back at Brighton Marina around 13:30 on Monday 30th June 2025.
