Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. 🌍 Épisode 46 Des mouillages de rêve, des fous rires et un peu d’aventure : bienvenue à bord. Dans cet épisode, on vous emmène découvrir Anse La Roche, au nord de Carriacou, un endroit sauvage et authentique comme on les aime 🤍 On commence par profiter pleinement de la plage : sport les pieds dans le sable, quelques échanges de badminton, rires garantis et bonne humeur au rendez-vous. Après l’effort, le réconfort 😋 direction le seul restaurant de la plage, un lieu simple mais plein de charme, où l’on partage avec vous ce que l’on nous sert et l’ambiance unique de cet endroit hors du temps. Le lendemain, cap sur Sandy Island, un petit coin de paradis absolument incroyable. Impossible de garder ça pour nous… alors le drone prend son envol 🎥✨ pour vous offrir des images aériennes à couper le souffle : eau translucide, sable blanc et bateau posé dans un décor de carte postale. Mais la vie en bateau, ce n’est pas que du rêve 😅 On vous emmène aussi avec nous pour une mission beaucoup moins glamour mais indispensable : les poubelles. Et vous verrez que parfois, ce qui semble simple à terre devient vite une vraie aventure en mer… Monter sur un ponton peut se transformer en véritable séance d’escalade 😂 Heureusement, ça se termine par un moment détente bien mérité sur la plage du Paradise Beach, alors on ne va clairement pas se plaindre ! Le jour suivant, place à une activité organisée par le Paradise Beach, un vrai régal pour les enfants… et pour les grands aussi 🎨 Sur une planche de bois, ils doivent peindre le nom de notre bateau, destiné à rejoindre une collection de pancartes qui décorent le lieu. Une super idée, un moment créatif, convivial et chargé de souvenirs (et évidemment, impossible pour moi de ne pas y mettre ma petite patte d’artiste 😄). Pour finir cet épisode, on vous embarque avec nous en navigation, un peu plus agitée que ces derniers temps. C’est le début de notre descente vers Grenade, avec une première étape à Ronde Island 🌊⛵ Vent, vagues et sensations… la vraie vie de marin reprend ses droits. In this episode, Mark from Nomad Boat Building travels to Denmark to help his friend Mikkel of Small Boat School—and in their spare time, they take on the restoration of a 200-year-old Danish timber frame barn. Originally relocated in 1862, this historic structure is being carefully repaired and adapted into a future hands-on classroom space. Using a mix of traditional timber framing joinery and practical modern tools, the two work to stabilize leaning walls, replace rotten sill beams, repair posts, and fit new mortise and tenon joints into centuries-old wood. Along the way, they reuse original lime-mortared bricks, discuss historic Scandinavian building terminology, and demonstrate efficient, minimal-intervention repairs that preserve as much original material as possible. Expect half-lap joints, scarf joints, loose tenons, chain mortising, and plenty of problem-solving as they carefully shift and realign parts of the barn’s structure. This series documents the restoration of a historic Danish barn, showing traditional craftsmanship, structural timber repair, and the realities of working on old agricultural buildings. I created this episode in response to a viewer comment about single-handed docking. In the video, I demonstrate my technique for docking the boat on a long, straight dock and also bringing my boat into my marina slip. On a long, straight dock it's pretty easy and straight-forward. At my marina, there are some constraints including extremely shallow water and a small, shared slip. My particular sailboat also does not turn well to port when the wind is coming from the port side. The boat turns very well to starboard, even against a strong wind. The shallow water around my marina limits maneuverability and also requires that my centerboard be raised, which increases my leeway and makes the boat more difficult to steer when motoring with wind on the beam. Docking at my slip takes a bit more effort. I use the boat hook to grab the lines and the motor to keep my boat pressed against the dock until I secure the bow lines.
