Solo NonStop Circumnavigation: day 18, The Last Of The Wind The Bravest Dog in the World Is About to Change It. Help Us Get There. I’m Kimmer O’Reilly — sailor, survivor, and founder of a mission that shouldn’t be possible. Two-time blood cancer nearly took my life. When I survived, I expected joy. What came instead was an identity crisis. I didn’t know who I was anymore — just that the old me was gone. Then came Casper — my service dog, my best friend, my reason to fight forward. Now, Casper and I are doing something no one believes can be done: a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe… starting from the wrong side. We’re sailing east, into the wind and current, through the Southern Ocean and past the Cape of Good Hope — proving that after cancer, life isn’t over. It can be better than it ever was. But we’re not just breaking records. We’re launching a nonprofit to help cancer survivors rediscover purpose, identity, and joy. This GoFundMe isn’t just to keep our sails full. It’s to build something that lasts long after we return. Donate today — not just to help Casper and me sail around the world, but to help thousands of survivors believe they can start again. Let’s show the world what’s possible. 👉 https://bit.ly/BravestDogInTheWorld

In this episode, workshop manager Dan takes us through the final checks before infusing the Dazcat 1500 hull, one of the most crucial stages of the composite build process. You’ll see how every detail is carefully inspected before the resin starts to flow: Checking for air leaks to ensure a perfect vacuum seal Fusing the mould sections together for a seamless, strong, watertight structure Explaining each layer of the layup, including core materials, reinforcement fabrics, peel ply, flow mesh, and resin feed lines And finally, the moment of truth, as the resin is infused smoothly through the laminate This behind-the-scenes look shows the precision and teamwork that go into every Dazcat build. It’s where engineering, experience, and craftsmanship combine to create lightweight, high-performance multihulls built to last. "You feel so small at the top of a 10-meter wave..." Pen Duick VI, led by the fearless Marie Tabarly, battles a brutal 60-knot storm as she rounds Cape Horn during the Ocean Globe Race 2023 – the sister race to the legendary Golden Globe Race (GGR). In this gripping moment of raw ocean power, the boat surfs at an incredible 28.3 knots, riding towering swells and navigating intense lows with bravery and precision. 🔥 Watch the surf. Feel the fear. Celebrate the victory. This is offshore sailing at its wildest. 🌍 Follow the race: https://oceangloberace.com/ 📌 Entrant Profile: https://oceangloberace.com/entrants/pen-duick-vi 🎙️ Marie’s words (AI-translated): “Speed is safety. You must keep the sail up.” “We averaged 270 miles a day… sometimes surfing at 28.3 knots.” “At Cape Horn, the sea calms—but before that… it’s chaos.” “You realize the immensity of the ocean standing atop a 10-meter wave.” ⛵ Featuring: Pen Duick VI Skipper: Marie Tabarly Cape Horn passage (Feb 6) Translated 9 & Gitana close chase Hugo’s birthday surprise 🎈 AI Translation for Marie's speech in the video: So, the Guardi passage is almost our only source of weather updates. It's done by amateur radio operators who volunteer to provide weather updates to those crossing the Pacific. It happens that today we have a serious weather alert for the passage, with winds between 40 and 60 knots. Potentially 10 meters high waves announced. The weather is worsening, but we also receive weather updates through maps. We try to get the maps, but they're quite rudimentary. The sea is starting to get rough, and the swell is deepening. At some point, the wind stabilized between 40 knots, 45 knots, to 50 knots, then from 50 to 60 knots before dropping back to 50. It kept rising and falling, and the waves, well, there were waves and swells, some breaking waves, and the boat started to surf. We averaged about 12 knots throughout this low pressure area, which amounts to approximately 270 nautical miles per day. We had beautiful days of consistent surfing between 20 and 23 knots. There was even a surf at 28.3 knots, which I think scared us all. We were all very frightened, but the boat on fire completely. Indeed, the sea was very rough, so the challenge was to keep the boat aligned and manage the waves coming from port or starboard, which could easily catch the stern of the boat and make us broach. In such conditions, it's crucial to keep sail up; speed is safety, so you must keep the sail up and move the boat as fast as possible to control and not be overwhelmed by the swell. Instead, know where to position yourself, maintain speed in the trough of a wave, and be ready to tackle the next wave with good speed. Steering was very challenging; those who are cold once they're at the helm usually warm up in a few seconds because of this, plus the stress of being at the helm. And yeah, there are moments when you feel quite small, especially at the top of a wave, 7 to 10 meters high, looking at the vast ocean. It's really when you're at the top of the wave that you realize the immensity of the sea. And then, we're at the Horn, not just anywhere in the world. We know we're approaching Cape Horn, and once we leave this low pressure area on February 6th at 6 AM, we pass Cape Horn. The crew passing Cape Horn isn't that difficult because when you arrive, the sea is calm, and there's no wind. The challenge is before reaching Cape Horn; passing it is the reward. We passed Cape Horn under excellent conditions with an incredible sunrise. It was the first sunrise in Patagonia, just sublime. And well, the Transled team was still there, passing Cape Horn a few hours after us. From Cape Horn, we started our ascent of the Atlantic towards Punta del Este, passing a place called the Strait of the Sea, west of the Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas. Our friends from Translated9 also followed us closely in the Strait of the Sea, overtaken by Char Cordrelier and Gitana, who are also completing their circumnavigation. So, we won our bet, arriving before the Ultimes. At Cape Horn, it was nice; we got to talk a bit with Charles and will meet up in Lorient. It wouldn't be us without the craziness of our crew. We must talk about Hugo's birthday, where the animation team got involved and managed to have a water balloon fight while outside there.

The ARC is the original transocean rally for cruising yachts. Around 150 boats set sail every year in November, sailing from Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria to Rodney Bay on Saint Lucia. The rally attracts people of all ages and nationalities, sailing monohulls, multihulls and even motor boats from 27 feet to 100 feet (8.23m-32m). Over 8,000 boats have sailed with us to the Caribbean since the first ARC in 1986. The 2,700NM Atlantic crossing takes around 18-21 days for the average yacht. The record is 8 days and six hours, set by the maxi Rambler 88 (USA) in 2016. This year we are bringing you along with live broadcasted updates starting from Tuesday 18th of November and then every day at 16.00 UTC, until Sunday 23rd when the start will take place from 12.00 UTC. The first five days for the all female team on the The Famous Project CIC circumnavigation saw a cautious departure in rough seas and stormy squalls and a tricky crossing of an anticyclonic ridge off the coast of Portugal. Alexia Barrier, Dee Caffari, Annemieke Bes, Rebecca Gmür Hornell, Deborah Blair, Molly LaPointe, Támara Echegoyen and Stacey Jackson have since been sailing downwind in the trade winds. The maxi trimaran is shaking off the dust and lengthening its stride south of the Cape Verde Islands. The next challenge is the Doldrums, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, just above the equator, where the north-east and south-east trade winds collide, creating an area of great stormy instability, where sudden gusts of over 30 knots alternate with endless moments of dead calm. We hear from the team on board, including a repair of one of their wheels, take a look at the tracker and the Doldrums, then enjoy some epic footage from about the trimaran. You can follow the race via the tracker at https://trimaran-idec.geovoile.com/julesverne/2025/viewer/ Thumbnail photo and onboard video (c) Deborah Blair #sailing #roundtheworld #trimaran #recordattempt

Our sail from Bermuda to St. Martin was a LONG 6 days. Avoiding squalls, we chose the departure day knowing we would have some doldrums, but this was worst then we thought it would be. It made the trip take longer than we anticipated, burned more fuel running the iron jenny. And our new sail batten box broke making sailing even more handicapped.

The beautiful anchorage at the top of the Bosphorus, summer 2010. Arrived here after a long and pretty windy sail from Bulgaria. Poyraz is in Turkey. For details of my book visit www.oflandseaandsky.com for photography see www.malcolmsnook.com

We spent 6 weeks in NZ experiencing as many places, activities, accommodations, food and modes of transportation as we possibly could. We scheduled everything via internet and our 6-week vacation went without a hitch ... amazing and a testimonial to the quality of NZ tourism operators. This film in several parts shows you what we did so you get ideas of what to visit yourself! Look on www.TropicalSailingLife.com for a detailed pdf document that details all operators' details. This trip took place in 2003 so some info might not be current anymore but it certainly will give you a good overview of NZ tourism
