Sailing to Annapolis was a milestone for us, but life afloat brings new challenges. This week we arrive in Annapolis, wrestle with how power and water are limiting our cruising plans, and take on a few boat projects like repairing a leaky hatch. We also face two big weather events: a wild summer storm, and hurricane Erin which ended up being surprisingly uneventful. 📍 Chesapeake Bay → Annapolis ⛵ Royal Cape 500 Catamaran 🔔 Subscribe for weekly sailing family episodes. Set sail with Bela Musits and Mike Malekoff in this exciting new episode of Sailing and Cruising the East Coast of the United States. In Episode 150, our co-hosts recount their memorable voyage from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Croton-on-Hudson, New York, aboard Mike’s Hunter 44 Deck Salon sailboat. This leg of their multi-day journey brings them through the iconic New York Harbor, under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, and into the scenic, tide-influenced waters of the Hudson River. In This Episode: Departure from Atlantic Highlands Marina at first light. Crossing New York Harbor and entering the Hudson River through the Narrows. The impact of tides and currents on their progress upriver. Passing under major bridges including the Verrazzano-Narrows and George Washington. Sailing past the skyline of Manhattan and navigating busy shipping lanes. Dealing with barge traffic and negotiating safe passage. Arrival at Half Moon Bay Marina in Croton-on-Hudson after a 50-nautical-mile journey. Highlights & Reflections: Bela and Mike share firsthand insights into trip planning, navigation decisions, and the challenges of timing tides correctly. They discuss why wind, tide, and commercial traffic can make or break a day on the water—especially on the Hudson River. Mike, who sails less frequently, offers a fresh perspective on the adventure, while Bela—an experienced sailor—explains the importance of strategic route planning and situational awareness. You’ll hear how they handled strong currents, spotted landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Palisades, and maintained safe passage through one of the busiest and most historic waterways in the United States. Bela reflects on how a calm day with minimal wind provided an ideal opportunity to motor efficiently while soaking in the scenery. Why This Episode Matters: If you're planning to cruise up the Hudson River or pass through New York Harbor by sailboat or powerboat, this episode is packed with real-world insights. Bela and Mike's conversation touches on navigation strategies, safe anchoring, and their experiences at marinas along the route. We check in with Mark Stephenson, Commodore of the Mersey Yacht Club in Devonport, Tasmania just weeks after the biggest storm they have seen in 50 years, swept away their marina and the vessels berthed at it. In this candid chat, Mark shares details of the people and vessels rescued and sad stories of those that were lost. This interview provides a graphic insight into the forces of nature and the major impact a 24-hour storm can have on people’s lives. Nestled on the edge of Bass Strait, one of the most treacherous passages of ocean in the world, Mark tells us first hand what it was like to see his marina swept away. http://www.viewyacht.com/amazinglady AMAZING LADY is a fabulous new Lagoon 560 S2 cruising catamaran offering the best in sailing innovation combined with luxurious accommodations and four social areas. Inside the spacious salon, find yourself surrounded by vertical windows offering 360-degree visibility and plenty of natural light. A large u-shaped lounge is the central social area and converts to an elegant space for formal indoor dining. The large galley has a convenient storage console that separates it from the salon. Open the large sliding doors and the living area flows outside to the spacious aft terrace. Here guests can relax under a large bimini that shades a table and seating for eight or more as Amazing Lady installed the larger aft dining table for maximum comfort. Up a spiral staircase from the main deck, the flybridge is a popular spot with guests. The helm is forward, surrounded by electric winches and all the necessary sail-control lines for the skipper. Aft, there are cushion-covered benches for sitting and lounging and a great sunbathing area, all separated from the sail maneuvers area. A canvas top helps protect everyone from the sun. Below deck, four staterooms accommodate eight guests in two queen cabins aft, one twin cabin midship, and one queen forward port. (Note: crew quarters are normally the queen forward starboard cabin. However, if guests request all queen cabins, the crew will happily switch to the twin cabin midship.) The two aft cabins both have direct access to the aft deck as well as the salon and have walk-around beds. The forward cabins have a large window that provides great natural light. All cabins have ensuite bath, excellent storage, hanging lockers and shelves. Music by bensound.com
