Well every sailor has their storm story and this is ours. 50-58 knots for just under two hours in the middle of the ocean. 58 knots is force 11 on the Beaufort Wind Scale, which is one notch under the first category for hurricane strength. It was quite an experience and not the fun kind. Both Mari and I knew - at the time - we could not make any mistakes. This video shows what happened and what tactics we used to deal with it. Enjoy!

In this gripping episode, we share our intense preparations for an impending storm on the Isles of Scilly. Join us for a real-time and partially technical account of the harrowing experience that unfolds when the center of a depression passes overhead. Brace yourself as we take you through the heart of the storm. Safely moored on a buoy in the serene New Grimsby Sound, we thought we were prepared for whatever nature had in store. However, when the storm force winds hit us from the southeast, we quickly realized the true power of the elements. Witness the turbulent chaos as the wind howls and the waves crash around us. As the storm reaches its peak, a brief moment of calm settles in, creating an eerie stillness. But within minutes, everything changes. The wind abruptly shifts direction by 180 degrees, and we find ourselves at the mercy of a full-blown assault from the northwest. We were fortunate to have weathered the storm without major incident, but sadly, others were not as lucky. Several yachts in the area dragged their anchors, while one vessel tragically ran aground in St. Helen's Pool. Thankfully, there were no lives lost, but the event serves as a stark reminder of the power of nature. Join us on this gripping journey as we recount our survival through the storm, sharing the highs and lows of our experience. Witness the raw power of the ocean and the strength of human resilience. Through it all, we are reminded of the importance of preparedness, respect for the elements, and the fragility of life at sea. I hate docking. It's always so stressful for me. Jeff is great. It doesn't bother him at all. In this episode, we attempt our first med mooring on Wind Therapy as we pull into the Nelson's Dockyard on Antigua. We began by sailing from Saba to Statia. Then we fled Statia and motored to St. Kitts. (You'll have to watch to find out why.) After St. Kitts, we sailed back to Statia (to fix our legal problems,) then visit Nevis, and finally attempt our first Med Mooring (Mediterranean Mooring) in Antigua. It wasn't a shit show, but it was definitely stressful. Thanks for watching. Give us a like, subscribe, and hit the notification bell so you'll know every time we upload a new video. We picked up the outboard off of our old Dinghy a couple of months ago. This 9.9 hp 4 stroker Mercury has been sitting for at least 4 years. It has been neglected but was in decent shape when it was put up on storage. Sadly storage in this case was nothing more than sitting in the dry storage area of our marina. It was susceptible to sun exposure and many leaves from the trees behind it. I would love to hear your comments, approvals, corrections or observations from your experiences. This kind of community discussion is really helpful for others as well. In this 2 part video series we are going to take a look at the most common items likely affecting this motors ability to start or run. We will start with the fuel system as it is likely gummed up from sitting and not being stored properly. (no gas treatment, didn't drain the carbs and likely had ethanol based fuel in the tank and lines). Video #1 (this one) is all about replacing all the fuel lines both from the tank to the motor, as well as inside the motor housing. This is important as the ethanol exposure to fuel lines can break down the lining inside them and leave a gummy residue. We also check for spark to make sure we validate that our issue is truly fuel focused. Video #2 (https://youtu.be/x1-9FlVXjWQ) is the second half of this video and shows a complete removal, disassembly, cleaning and reassembly of the Carburetor. This is a slightly longer video but has every step you will need to know, with video close-ups to help even the novice (like myself) to repeat this process on their own motor. If you think you have a fuel pump problem here is a video on how to test and rebuild that as well. https://youtu.be/XWbgW7WFtHw If you found this video series useful, please do share it with others as that helps spread the videos to others who can benefit. Sailing our Catana 47 Catamaran from the Marquesas to the Tuamotus
Join me as I dive deep into the shocking secrets of the Franklin Expedition's doomed voyage and uncover the truth behind their mysterious fate! In 1845, Sir John Franklin, a seasoned British naval officer, set out on an expedition to traverse the Northwest Passage, a treacherous water route that connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic. This was no ordinary voyage; it was an ambitious attempt to chart a new course and uncover the secrets of the Arctic. The expedition was equipped with two state-of-the-art ships, the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror, and a crew of 129 men. The goal was to explore and map the passage, and Franklin was confident in his team's ability to succeed. What happened to the Franklin Expedition, though, is a mystery that has captivated the imagination of historians and explorers for centuries. How did a well-equipped and well-trained crew, led by an experienced commander, meet such a tragic end? The expedition's fate is a puzzle that has spawned countless theories, from mutiny to environmental disasters. One thing is certain, though: something went horribly wrong, and the ships and crew were never seen again. The mystery surrounding the Franklin Expedition's demise is all the more intriguing because of the preparations that went into the voyage. Franklin and his crew were equipped with the best technology and supplies available at the time, and they had spent years planning and preparing for the journey. They were, by all accounts, ready for anything the Arctic could throw at them. So, what went wrong? Was it a combination of bad luck and bad decisions, or was something more sinister at play? Despite the extensive preparations, the expedition was not without its risks. The Arctic is one of the harshest environments on Earth, and even the smallest mistake could have had disastrous consequences. The crew was faced with temperatures as low as -50 degrees Celsius, icy seas, and the ever-present threat of polar bears and other predators. It's possible that the crew simply underestimated the power of the Arctic environment. Theories about the Franklin Expedition's fate have ranged from the plausible to the bizarre. Some have suggested that the crew was stalked by a sea monster, while others believe that a meteorite or comet struck the ships. More plausible theories include the possibility of a mutiny, with some crew members rising up against Franklin and his officers. There's even evidence to suggest that the crew may have been affected by lead poisoning, caused by the lead-lined food cans that were used to supply them. Over the years, a wealth of evidence has emerged that has shed new light on the Franklin Expedition's fate. Archaeological expeditions have uncovered the remains of the crew's campsites, complete with abandoned equipment and personal belongings. Historical records have provided a detailed account of the expedition's preparations and early progress. One of the most significant discoveries, though, is the recent finding of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which were located in 2014 and 2016, respectively. The discovery of the ships has provided a treasure trove of new information about the expedition's fate. The wreckage of the HMS Erebus, for example, revealed that the ship had been stuck in the ice for at least a year before it sank. The crew's belongings, including their clothes and personal items, were still intact, suggesting that they had abandoned ship in a hurry. The wreckage of the HMS Terror, on the other hand, showed signs of a more gradual abandonment, with evidence of a desperate attempt to escape the frozen sea. The discovery of the Franklin Expedition's ships has raised more questions than answers, though. Why did the crew abandon ship, and what happened to them afterwards? Did they try to make it back to civilization, or did they succumb to the harsh conditions of the Arctic? The mysteries surrounding the expedition's fate will likely continue to fascinate us for years to come. In conclusion, the Franklin Expedition's doomed voyage is a testament to the power of human curiosity and exploration. Despite the tragedy that unfolded, the expedition's legacy lives on, inspiring new generations of explorers and historians to uncover the secrets of the Arctic. What do you think happened to the Franklin Expedition? Do you have a theory about their mysterious fate? Let me know in the comments below. Fast Downwind Sailing from Saint Martin to Virgin Gorda | Flying the Gennaker on Amel 50 "Mirage" ⛵💨
Set sail with me on an exhilarating passage from Saint Martin to Virgin Gorda, BVI! I left at 6 AM, greeted by perfect conditions to fly my big gennaker sail. With a true wind angle of 130-140° and wind speeds ranging from 16-25 knots, Mirage was absolutely flying downwind across the stunning Caribbean waters. Along the way, I captured an incredible moment - a whale surfacing nearby! 🐋 Plus, I had some fun overtaking a couple of other sailboats - proof that the gennaker is really fast when handled right. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing! Mirage broached three times under the powerful sail, but I found the perfect way to recover - without furling the gennaker. Watch as I navigate through these thrilling moments and finally drop anchor in the beautiful St. Thomas Bay, Virgin Gorda, BVI. ⚓ Like, comment, and subscribe for more real-life offshore sailing experiences! ⚓ #Sailing #SoloSailing #Amel50 #CaribbeanSailing #Gennaker #VirginGorda #BVI #SailingMirage
