Our next stop in the Eastern Caribbean is the group of small islands just south of Guadeloupe - Les Saintes. This is a very laid back place. The main island, Terre-de-Haut, swells during the day as many people visit by ferry and small cruise ships stop in several days a week. But around three in the afternoon all the visitors start to depart and it is like a different place till around nine the next morning, when the visitors come again. We find some excellent snorkeling, as well as great baguettes, croissants, and French food in general. Eric Fleury, a past member of NSC and current member of CVGR, is an avid sailor and a licensed ABYC electrical technician. He started sailing around age 12 on his father’s Nonsuch 30. He has owned a Tanzer 7.5 and now an Ontario 32 "Prince Igor". Eric has been one of the SOLO300 sailors for several summers. Having studied electronics and computers, he eventually left the corporate management world to dive full time into the boating world, both for work and leisure.

Losinwei Cascades in Malekula Island is one of the most beautiful tropical waterfalls where I have swam. They required a tough climb to get to, as we walked for one hour and half over slippery mud, rocks and roots, and many times wading in the river itself. The effort was truly worth while, as we enjoyed the swim as if there was no tomorrow.

Just when we thought our outboard woes were behind us… it breaks again in the wind and rain, no less! With the engine out of action, Matt rows ashore like a hero, gets it going temporarily, but it doesn’t last long. Thankfully, our friends come to the rescue, picking up a new 4hp outboard for us in Inverness. Big upgrade and a lot more weight for me (Paige) to wrangle aboard! We sail to Salen, meet our friends, and collect the new engine all after a fantastic sail in true Scottish style. From Salen, we set off for Loch Drambuie, enjoying another beautiful passage, navigating through a narrow gap past Broad Rock. To top it all off, Matt forages some winkles from the beach to cook for dinner. Not a bad way to end a day at sea. ⛵ Highlights: Outboard fails again in wind & rain Matt rows ashore & attempts a repair We upgrade to a 4hp engine (goodbye, 2.0!) Another trip to the Big Island to celebrate Anthony's birthday! We had amazing encounters with the dolphins on several dives, saw some of our favorite fish we don't typically see on Kauai (chevron tang, reticulated butterflyfish, black morph longnose butterfly) and came across an incredibly rare hybrid fish thought to be a bird and sunset wrasse! Unfortunately the north swell kicked us out for a few days allowing us the time to explore South Point, Volcano, and even a beautiful waterfall. On the last day we went on an offshore adventure and had an epic encounter with pilot whales and manta rays, then finally got our tiger shark at the very end!!! What a great trip!

Jesse Terry is a normal guy. Dad and husband, keeps a 9-5 job, lives in the city, etc etc, all that quote-unquote "normal" stuff. But he's decidedly not normal as a boat-owner, keeping a classic wooden ketch is top condition with some friends and racing & cruising her up and down New England's coast and out to Bermuda.
