After waiting around Waiheke for a couple of weeks and picking up some home schooling material we set off for Great Barrier. We are a family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a motorhome in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

When we just started out we trained a lot on lake Neusiedl near Austrias capital Vienna. The lake is quite big but only two meters deep. For my American friends, that's 6,5ft and that's just deep enough to sail but not by much. We often "found" something on the bottom, caught a fish or at least dragged an entire underwater jungle of seagrass behind us. The shallow water means that there are barley any waves, or as Misha Heemskerk would say: "Surfing is a different sport." This means two things, the boat gets very fast and the gusts kick like a mule. In this video you can see us at a level where we figured out the basics but still struggled with bearing away and standing position downwind. Anyway a week previous we won the biggest regatta in Austria the Hyundai Roundabout where we have beaten over 170 teams in absolute time. The key how we eventually left these issues behind us was good communication. We talked about literally everything. The moment you stop learning ist the day you stop sailing or so... Our liveaboard sailboat family of four head off to the San Juan Islands for the first time on our own boat. In this video you'll see us visit Clark Island, just off of Orcas Island. On our second outing we anchor for the first time off of Lummi Island before crossing over to Vendovi Island near Guemes Island. Shane paddleboards islands - one of the reasons why we're on the boat. He is circumnavigating the islands in the Puget Sound on his paddleboard. He's already done a number of them AND named rocks. The kids have learned a lot about the history of our area. I'm grateful for the opportunity for us all to witness the beauty of the Salish Sea. I hope this encourages them to be stewards of our waterways, it has for me. In this video we are cruising out from Squalicum Harbor at Bellingham Bay. Amazing marina and jumping off point if the San Juan Islands are your final destination. All of the islands we visit in this video are just a short distance from there by boat. They were excellent training grounds for us with a new to us boat. Our boat is a 41ft ketch made by SeaFinn, boat makers out of Finland. If the boat looks like a Nauticat, it's because it was made by former Nauticat builders. We loved this layout and craftsmanship compared to the Nauticats we looked at.
