It is now two days since the accident. Yesterday Jamie and Alicia made some initial inquiries at the police station in Phiphi town centre. They left expecting nothing more of it but when they returned to Esper. Liz had already received a telephone call from the officer in charge. After five cups of coffee our translator, nickname Wat, arrives. An agreement has been made with the skipper of the boat. He will pay five installments over five months and put down a down-payment. Satisfied with our agreement with the skipper it is time to weigh anchor and head south. In this little clip, recorded as we head down the east side of Phiphi, Jamie explains that we are now sailing in flotilla, with American and Alicia on Synchronicity behind us. We monitor two channels on the VHF, the usual Ch16 and also channel zero eight so we can communicate between each other. Jamie also makes the important point that, despite our initial visit to PhiPhi in the busy southern anchorage of Ton Sai Bay, and despite the events of the last couple of days, Phiphi is still a stunningly spectacular island. Although the town centre caters solely for tourists and is busy with clubs, pubs and bars, there's no getting away from its sheer beauty. On the way Liz indulges in one of her favourite fruits, the mangosteen. Our next destination is a group of islands called Koh Hah Yai which, translated, means five islands. These five pinacles jut vertically from the sea some miles from land. It was a bit hit and miss as to whether we'd make the 20 mile journey before sundown. Normally this isn't a problem if the islands offered large sandy bays in which to anchor, but the pilot guide specifically states that there is nowhere to anchor here. We were to pick up moorings instead, but now that we're in the transitional period, which side of the islands would be best? And would we get there in time to even find the moorings as the light faded? We did a quick recce of the eastern side of the islands and decided to head for the middle island. American went ahead and took the inside mooring buoy whilst we took one a little further out. Hanging off a mooring so close to rock is a little unsettling but once we had settled in we took in the sunset and the small island next to us known as floating island. Night time. We're hanging off a mooring on the east side in the hope that the prevailing winds stay from the west but during the night with Esper's bow so close to Floating Island a storm brews. You just never know what you're going to find when you go look at a used sailboat that is for sale. Canadian Ken and I were blown away by this classic beauty. If you're not familiar with the Vindos, they do things a little differently: The Vindo 40 is not 40 feet, as one might expect, but rather just shy of 31 feet - the 40 is representative of her sail area, which is 420 +/- square feet. And if you want a really good look at another beautiful Vindo (a Vindo 32, which is just shy of 30 feet...), check out the early episodes of  @SailingMagicCarpet . They did a full refit and she is also an amazingly beautiful boat (which recently sold to a new owner). The Vindo 40, designed by Carl Andersson, was an extremely successful boat with 850 built between 1970 and 1982. This Vindo 40 has been owned and loving maintained for the past three years and sailed locally on the coast of Maine where she has spent a good part of her life, hailing out of Camden. She has wintered indoors and was repowered in 2004 with a new Westerbeke that has less than 250 hrs on it! That is amazing. A solid, comfortable boat, she would be ideal for a solo sailor, a couple, or a small family. Koh Khai Nai and Koh Khai Nok are two islands on the eastern side of Phuket. Both islands are regarded as party islands in non Covid times. The islands are normally surrounded by speeds boats and loaded with tourists hanging out and partying at the make shift bars on the islands. However today, we get to see a different version of Koh Khai Nai as Covid has basically shutdown Phuket tourism. This week we are joined by Howard from Simpson Marine in Phuket. Simpson marine is the local Lagoon dealer and often has other boats for sale that were traded in on a new Lagoon. If you are looking for a boat in SE Asia I would highly recommend getting in touch with them as their after sales service is as good as it gets. As with any boat, Captain King has had things break and other challenges come up after the sale. Simpson Marine has been there the whole time to help him out, even 6 months after Captain King purchased his Seawind from them. Captain King's sailing catamaran is a Seawind 1000 XL2. We were quite impressed with its light wind ability. We were in very light winds for this trip to Koh Khai Nai. We couldn't believe that with the Code 0 up we were going 75%+ of wind speed. Next week we will be hitting up Koh Khai Nok. Our second day cruising around the Thai islands on my new sailing catamaran started at anchor on the north end of Koh Larn. By 8 a.m., the peaceful anchorage was already filling up with tour boats and jet skis, and it was getting pretty uncomfortable. But before we could escape to the quieter side of the island, I had an electrical problem to figure out. The batteries were showing a much higher load than they should have, the charger wasn’t keeping up, and I couldn’t figure out where all the extra power was going. Luckily, we had plenty of solar helping supplement the system. After chasing the electric gremlin for a while, we pulled anchor and sailed around to the east side of Koh Larn, where we found a much more peaceful anchorage near town. There was even a floating dock, which made it easy to take the dinghy ashore, walk the dogs, and find a great little waterfront spot for lunch. Back on the boat, I tried out my brand-new eFoil for the first time, Olivia took the paddleboard out, and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon before heading back into town for an amazing dinner on the water. Chased by the threat of a possible cyclone we discover the beauty of Australia's east coast islands from Great Keppel to Middle Percy with some fantastic spinnaker sailing in between. The distances involved meant we had to be up early but got to see some beautiful sunrises as a result. We could not pass by without visiting the famous (among cruising yachts) A-frame hut on Middle Percy to leave Florence's mark among the hundreds of others there. We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. This week an exciting package arrived that we’d been waiting for for a while. We enthusiastically rented a car and headed to the shipping centre to pick it up... only to be told it was still on a boat heading to St Martin and would arrive in the next few days. With a car rented and nothing to use it for, we decided to check out a bit of the island, including the deserted Philipsburg, usually a cruise ship and tourist mecca. Several days later, and after another failed attempt to receive the parcel that seemingly wanted to evade us, we rented another car determined to have it in hand by the end of the day. Half a day later and we were following the delivery van around but finally managed to get said parcel into our possession!! Later in the week, to stretch out legs, we decided to hike up to the highest hill we could find in St Martin, and on the way explain how we got gifted such a generous present. After wrapping up our sail in Turkey with Kraken, we head to the factory to see how one of the boats are actually made (video to be released soon!) Following a few requests to do some video clips of Impi sailing out in the vast ocean with good winds, we decided to post a clip taken en-route French Polynesia (MAUPITI) to US SAMOA (PAGO PAGO) where we had a number of squalls passing overhead. Of course the effect of video at sea is such that it does not capture the wave conditions for what they really are out there with the result that we feel it not worthwhile taking footage ... however, in this situation and with a number of squalls passing overhead, we thought some may find the aspect of sailing with the asymmetric up during these passing squalls interesting. We pretty much had the sail up throughout the journey, substituting it now and again with the spinnaker ... saw us arrive in PAGO PAGO after 7 days without the use of engines. Thats not too shabby for a cruising cat loaded with all appliances and full of fuel and water ...
