After our disastrous attempt to cross the Atlantic Ocean a few years ago, it started to dawn on us that we were going to try it again… very soon. We had officially arrived in Bermuda after a 6 days sail from St Martin, with LOTS of leaks, a few broken blocks and plenty of caulking to do in order to get us ready for a trip across the ocean again. Being a little scarred from last time, we were trying to prepare for EVERY eventuality… including checking the propeller shaft, JUST in case it had moved! It was a massive sigh of relief that we confirmed that it had not moved and if something broke on this passage, it most likely wasn’t gong to be that. It took us about a week of preparation to get us ready to go again. Now we just had to wait for a suitable weather window. So while we were waiting, we decided to rent a scooter and do a more thorough exploration of the island than we had done last time. Our first and big stop of the journey was the beautiful beaches of Bermuda. Spotting HUGE fish, snorkeling and discoing little fairy ponds in the cliffs. It was such a gorgeous place that we ended up spending a lot longer here than planned and after ways had a late lunch at the oldest pub in Bermuda, the Swizzle Inn. While we were there, we identified a pretty good window which we might have been able to cross in. It is day 12 of our Atlantic Crossing, and we kick off the day with some breakage again! We are pretty down about it, especially considered how many incidents we’ve endured so far. Bur our friends and former crew send us an email that brings a smile on our faces and we carry on our day. By the end of the afternoon, I get a genius idea, and we stop the boat to jump in the water and swim in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ** JOIN THE CREW! ** Join our virtual crew of Patrons at: https://www.patreon.com/ryanandsophiesailing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** MUSIC ** 🎶 In this video: Bach - Musette Summer city (Epidemic Sound) Moonlight Sonata Vintage Harmony (Epidemic Sound) Niklas Ahlström - Style 5 (Epidemic Sound) Air on a G string - Ian Post (Artlist) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ** GEAR ** ⛵️Our boat: Polar Seal, 2007 Beneteau Oceanis 40, owners version (2 cabins layout). Catching big Spanish Mackerel, spearing Coronation Trout and exploring remote islands with a million turtles! https://www.sailingnandji.com/ In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we depart the island of Simeulue and head 30nm out to sea to the remote tiny island group we refer to as Turtle island! On our sail down the coast from Thailand 5 months ago, we briefly stopped off at these islands and swam with the most amount of turtles we had ever seen. We never expected to be back here, but since we had the opportunity too, we had to return to see all the turtles again! The water is crystal clear and with a freezer needing to be replenished, Yosh does some spearing landing a couple of Coronation Trout. To go with the large Spanish Mackerel we caught the day before, we are back in business. Living from the Sea. With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra to live the island life and chase the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we have returned to Thailand to wait for the weather and begin our journey to the northern route of the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trade winds begin! The adventure is just beginning as we plan to sail our Nandji around the world!! We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World! Moin Freunde! Denn unsere Bootssuchen stehen an erster Stelle. Don't be too worried, we are not out cruising right now, we are safe and tucked away back home at Indiantown Marina. Having been back one week now from our shakedown, we've been given plenty of notice that Irma is headed our way, and we are doing everything we can to prepare ourselves and our boat. Indiantown is situated about 10 miles east of Lake Okeechobee, with locks on both sides of us. As this goes up, Hurricane Irma is intended to strike Florida as a Category 5 storm, making contact with mainland Florida near the Ft. Meyers area and continuing north across land. We have the boat secured and will be riding out the storm at our local shelter. Georgie has made her way up to Alabama with friends and is safe and out of harms way. In case we lose power and internet during the storm, we will be sending messages to family and friends via InReach to let them know how we are doing, and those messages will be relayed to our Facebook page. If you would like to know how we are doing throughout the storm, check there for updates. Wish us well and just know that we are as prepared as we can be! Cheers from our hurricane hole! Having overcome the odds and returned PATRIOT to the Prada Cup racecourse, American Magic faces down a must-win final series in Auckland. A fully (and quickly) repaired, re-wired and re-rigged U.S. AC75 and her crew fight to keep their dreams alive in the face of technical unknowns and an opponent that has been busy developing speed while PATRIOT was trapped in her shed. Across just two short days, the exhilarating, unforgiving and, sometimes, utterly heartbreaking nature of sailing at the highest level is on full display. To all of American Magic's supporters back home and around the world, thank you for taking this journey with us. We saw, heard and felt your encouragement of our team during many hard hours of designing, boatbuilding, testing, and racing. We have been honored to be your Challenger. 🇺🇸✨ -- Director: Chelsea Slayter DP: Sebastian Slayter Additional Photography: Dylan Clarke, America's Cup Ltd. --- © American Magic

Over the years we have sailed the Raz De Sein three times. Preparation gives me sleepless nights every time. The Raz de Sein is after all one of the fiercest tidal gates in the world. Getting your timing right is the difference between one of the best and one of the worst sails you will ever experience. We have waited ten days for this weather window and today is time to leave. For more test data, performance chart, detail review, captain reports and more about Meridian Yachts 441 Sedan, go to http://www.boattest.com/boats/boat_video.aspx?ID=2856&ref=YT The Meridian 441 comes standard with twin 380-hp QSB Cummins electronically-controlled diesels drive conventional running gear. For that reason Meridian makes both bow and stern thrusters standard to make docking a cinch even in adverse current. Optional engines include 425-hp and 480-hp Cummins diesels with optional Zeus pod drives. She has two large staterooms below, each with ensuite heads. Both the salon and flying bridge seating are large and we particularly like the double-wide companion seat on the flying bridge.

This week, we continue cruising the Intracoastal Waterway down the east coast of Florida. We miss sailing, but offshore waters were calling for sloppy seas and light winds. With few safe harbors to duck into in the case of emergency, we decided to stay grounded in the ICW. And when we say “stay grounded in the ICW” we REALLY mean it. That’s right, despite following channel markers and using a Garmin chart plotter…we ran our sailboat aground on the way from Saint Augustine to Daytona. The shifting Florida sands can be hard to anticipate. Fortunately, a new friend we met in Saint Augustine was nearby and happy to come to our rescue…James Bond style (but with better music)! We tried twisting her off the sandbar. We tried pushing her off the sandbar. We tried kedging her off the sandbar. We kedged so hard, but to no avail. It wasn’t until a Tow Boat US boat happened to cross our path that we had the power to get our 27,000’ wooden sailboat floating again. Boy, did we put on a show. All of this motoring requires a lot of fuel, and our Keenan Filter system comes in handy for consolidating our fuel, ensuring we have enough gas to get where we’re going without having to switch between fuel tanks while underway. We can’t speak highly enough about Keenan Filters—and we’re not getting paid to say that! Another mechanism we’ve been really happy with is our manual windlass. We’ve been anchoring pretty much every night, and dropping and weighing anchor is easy-peasy—even when caught in an afternoon rainstorm. In Fort Pierce, we stopped for provisions and fuel (and Robin hit the local coffee shop…of course). We also got to watch a wrecked wooden boat get torn apart by an excavator! Then, we got back to it, making way towards the Okeechobee Waterway and Lake Okeechobee. -------------------------- Acorn to Arabella: Journey of a Wooden Boat: Episode 337 -------------------------- 00:00 Intro 00:27 St. Augustine to Daytona Beach 02:35 Stuck In The Mud 09:16 Why We’re Not Sailing 13:00 More Love For the Keenan Filter 18:42 Anchors Aweigh 21:32 Its Raining in Titusville 24:30 Fueling Up, Movin’ On -------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella started as a wooden boat building project in Granby, Massachusetts. Nico Lunven was hit by a jib sheet on Team Malizia last night as the fleet sailed away from Itajaí towards Newport in Leg 4 of The Ocean Race. He suffered minor cuts and abrasions to the face, has been consulted by a doctor and is fit to keep racing and taking his regular watch. Nico Lunven has still been able to keep doing his routing through the night and commented: "I feel like a boxer who has lost a match but it is ok". Even with this incident Team Malizia has managed to hold on to third place through the night and is only 2.5nm behind the lead at the time of this publication. 🎥 Antoine Auriol I Team Malizia ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Follow Our Team On Social Media: ⬇️ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/team_malizia/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/borisherrmann Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/teammalizia/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@team_malizia LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/team... #teammalizia #theoceanrace #offshoreracing #sailing #aracewemustwin #climateactionnow #imoca #willharris #borisherrmann #rosalinkuiper #nicolunven #christopherpratt #injury

What a winter!.... We felt that this would be a good time to put out our dissimilar metals experiment back to back and then hit it hard next week with a full length video. When mixing metals in a build, there are a lot of things to consider. Not only do the metals interact with each other when submerged in salt water, but some also have adverse effects on the wood they are embedded into. We speak a little bit about that in this video. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sign up for our email newsletter: http://eepurl.com/hn3Qyv Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. One thing we love about travelling is that you meet so many people and in the most random ways. The German couple we hitchhiked with in the previous episode invited us for a road trip around Bonaire. We go Geocaching, spot Flamingos and surfers. Then it’s time to say goodbye to Bonaire and sail to Curacao where we get greeted by a sailboat at sea who escorts us to the anchorage. We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built aluminium Beason 40, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started to sail south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us. WANT MORE? Here’s a quick briefing from the team ahead of the Cannes Boat Show (9–14 September). We run through the Fairline line-up we’re bringing to the Côte d’Azur: the new Squadron 58, the new Targa 40 with its drop-down balcony, the Targa 45 GT with glass doors, and the F//Line 33. There’s even a bit of friendly debate about favourites. Are you Team Targa or Team Squadron? 😄 We also flag a slight change to our berth in Cannes Marina. We’re still on the same pontoon, just a bit further along and still handy for the hotels and bars nearby. So if you’re planning a visit, you’ll still find us easily, just a few steps from all the action. 🍹⛵ Show hours are 10:00–19:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, with a late opening on Friday 12th until 22:00 (and a 6pm finish on Sunday). If you’d like guest tickets or to book a private viewing (the show is a touch more formal), drop us an email and we’ll get you sorted. And don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell - we’ll be posting updates and Shorts throughout the week. 🔔

Get 30 days of Headspace for free: https://headspace-web.app.link/e/MJSAILING30 Use code: MJSAILING30. We want little to no movement for our stern tube and cutlass bearing Matt and I have been continuing a lot of our work underneath the boat and in the engine beds. Last week we were able to bond the stern tube to the skeg, but it was slightly off, which is going to make for more work finishing it. We did not want the same problem on the port side! Luckily we have Colby's laser to help us from start to finish. Using our regular laser level to line up the template exactly within the engine bed, we then found the placement for the stern tube, and how the skeg will sit in it. Matt bonds the skeg to the hull with thickened resin, and we let it cure overnight. While that's going on though, we're able to glass around both the stern tube and skeg over on the starboard side. As far as my other work, I'm still finishing up touchups with our epoxy fairing compound so we can get the next layers of primer on the hulls. One big change is that on the starboard hull, our next coat of primer will be done with Awl Quick, which will be the last primer we use before paint. We hope you enjoy!
