While racing started on time for the second day of the GC32 Lagos Cup 2 on Portugal’s Algarve coast, sadly only one race could be held before the wind and sea state escalated to levels felt to be too dangerous to sail. Nonetheless, the one race sailed was a good one, with the wind in the high teens and gusting over 20 knots, and even though the breeze from the prevailing northwest was offshore, a short sharp chop had developed. The race also featured two lead changes.

One year ago we sold everything we owned and moved aboard a sailing catamaran, traveling the Caribbean with our two young kids. It was an incredible experience. I hope our story inspires anyone out there who has this dream to go for it. Our travels included the following destinations: Puerto Rico, St. Thomas US Virgin Islands, St. John, British Virgin Islands, St. Martin/Sint Maarten, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Grenada. When we left the dock for the first time, we really had very little experience. It was a scary, but rewarding adventure. Nothing in our land life really fulfills us the way that facing the challenges of living on a boat did. Editing this video was difficult. It took months for me to be able to even watch the videos. James had tears in his eyes the first few times he watched it. There is no doubt this experience left an indelible mark on us. Although we had to sell our boat and return to land after our sailing sabbatical, we are not done yet. We will return to the ocean someday. Are you ready to take your sailboat out for its first trip of the season? It's important to properly commission your boat to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this video, we'll walk you through the process of preparing your mast. The mast is crucial to the safety and operation of any sailboat. Ted Weyhrauch from Innovative Marine is in charge of this critical component. He is responsible for setting up all the equipment that will go on the mast such has TV Antenna, Dissipator, Wind Vane, and specialized equipment such as Radar, SSB, VHF, cellular antenna, etc. Another critical component of the mast is setting up the spreaders, shrouds, stays and installing tracks for the spinnaker pole. All of this and the associated wiring that goes with it, has to be run and staged so it can run into the boat as the mast is step. This is critical as some of the wiring in question is high frequency as Ted has to setup a complete run from the top of the mast to the panel where the equipment will be connected to, making the measuring and setup process critical. So you will see how much has to be planned and setup before your sailing yacht is ready for its first sail. Time for DPM's longest sail yet: St Lucia to Bequia. Around 50+ nautical miles. Unfortunately, the wind was not great so most of it is motoring. I make it there just after sunset only for my engine to overheat and shut off as I'm entering the anchorage. Luckily, my friends are there to bail me out. In this new series of The Rogue Rigger I take you along on our campaign to go to the 5o5 World Championships in Hayling Island, England. The worlds start in July of 2026 so we have just a year and a half to go. Follow Mike and I on our journey to get to the world championships, from boat upgrades, practice days, regattas, debriefs and some shenanigans along the way. In this episode we take you onboard our 505 for this years Elvstrom Zellerbach Regatta hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club. Among the 505 fleet there is ILCA 6 and 7's, Melges 15's, Club 420's, RS Tera's and RS Fevas. The wind gods showed up for this event... Saturdays racing was cut short as the breeze was in the mid to high 30's with gust to the low 40's. Only half of the 505 fleet was able to complete the race. The rest of the fleets stayed postponed on shore. Saturday we were treated to four races in more typical San Francisco City Front conditions, the breeze was mid teens to low twenties. Solid flood tide with the usual reverse current close to shore. We had our moments with the top half of the fleet, as the day went on we kept making more mistakes. Our conditioning is not there yet and that is something we need to work on. Overall we made big gains. Finally able to hold our lane upwind and downwind we were able to consistently pass boats. Good times!

Sailing my 2010 Precision 18 sailboat on a high-altitude (8,601 ft) Colorado lake under gloomy skies on a Sunday afternoon in August. The morning started out sunny and with clear skies, so I did some minor maintenance on the boat at the marina. By the time I got on the lake, afternoon thunderstorms were closing in. I stayed very close to the marina and only sailed for about 90 minutes. Eventually, rain and lightning drove me off the lake. But the sailing winds while I was out were ideal, and I'm so glad I went for it!
