Leaving Georgetown in the Exumas, I continue my solo sailing journey aboard Mirage, heading southeast toward three historic islands first visited during Christopher Columbus’ first voyage — San Salvador, Rum Cay, and Conception Island. It was a perfect sailing day - sunshine, steady trade winds blowing 20–25+ knots, and a beautiful downwind course at about 120° true wind. My original plan was to reach Rum Cay first, but offshore sailing often means adapting to the wind. After passing the southern tip of Long Island it became clear that the wind would not cooperate, so I followed the breeze and changed course toward Conception Island instead. That decision turned out to be incredible! Conception Island is completely uninhabited, with crystal-clear water and untouched beaches - one of the most peaceful anchorages I've ever visited. In the evening I shared some stories about Columbus' voyage while sitting on the transom at sunset. The next morning brought a true ocean passage: A straight downwind sail to Rum Cay, with bigger waves now that Mirage was no longer protected by the upwind islands. It was an awesome sail and incredible solitude - just the boat, the ocean, and the wind. Muita gente pergunta se é melhor morar em um veleiro perto de uma cidade ou em um paraíso isolado. A beleza dessa vida é não precisar escolher. Depois de duas semanas na calmaria da Ilha do Alecrim, era hora de levar a casa para a "capital" do Baixo São Francisco: a histórica cidade de Penedo. A jornada de 19 milhas subindo o Rio São Francisco começou antes das 5 da manhã, o único horário que a maré permitia. Com 2 metros de calado, a navegação é tensa, passando por trechos com apenas 50 centímetros de água sob a quilha. Contamos com a ajuda fundamental da Déia e do Maurício, do veleiro Baco, que iam na frente medindo a profundidade. Navegar por um rio sem cartas náuticas atualizadas exige confiança e planejamento. Foram 357 waypoints para seguir a track precisa passada por Mário Jorge, o velejador que mais conhece a região. É uma viagem que ecoa a história: em 1859, Dom Pedro II fez um trajeto semelhante, e a paisagem que vemos hoje é uma mistura de permanência e transformação, como a nova ponte em construção que ameaça o futuro da navegação no trecho. Chegar a Penedo, com suas fundações de mais de 460 anos sobre uma grande pedra, é um contraste com a planície ao redor. Mas nem mesmo a chegada foi simples. Logo depois de passar pelo trecho mais perigoso da ponte em obras, um momento de distração nos deixou encalhados, um lembrete de que no rio, a atenção precisa ser constante. Subir um rio é remar contra o fluxo natural, uma teimosia que define o ser humano. É buscar a origem para pegar impulso para o rebaixamento. Why: Really love the weather of Florida, the weather in Florida is closest to the weather we had when we lived in Honduras. We love water and beach which is abundant in Florida. Most everytime we have gotten away from the daily grind it has been to a beach with warm weather. We have been and lived in colder places and hated the winter. I meet Dani in W.A. and she married me cause I said I would show her warmer locations, kidding. Living in a cold place like W.A. or when we were in Germany for 3 years, all we thought about was warm locations. You may say, well Texas is darn hot, and you'd be right, but it is also dame cold in the winter, sometimes to single digits. I hope you like this video, if not it is something for me to remember this time in my life.

My mother is a Southern Californian & my father is Argentinean. At the age of 10 months my parents moved to a tiny West Indian Island called Bequia, part of the St. Vincent and the grenadines chain. At the age of 8, my mother decided to move further on to the South American Caribbean Island known as “Isla Margarita” (Venezuela). I grew up in “Playa El Yaque”, a world known windsurfing destination. I would say El Yaque was where I was born into windsurfing. I spend most of my time on Margarita and Maui for waves & all around sailing. I am really happy to have such a life working together with Mother Nature.
