Renaming a boat is a risky thing, but in this case it was necessary. Her name at purchase only made sense to the previous owners as it was a combination of their sons names, so it had to go. Additionally, we found ample evidence that a proper denaming/renaming ceremony never took place to ensure the original name was removed from the records of the gods of the seas and winds. We invited our friends and fellow cruisers to join us to bear witness to this beloved ritual. We asked them to bring only their cups and we offered as much rum as they could drink to help us with our prayers and offerings to the gods. To ensure our safe passage throughout the world, words were said and emphasized by appropriate gifts (Rum, of course). We celebrated into the night with friends new and newer. From there, we sail north along the dramatic Skeleton Coast, seeking shelter in the remote and stunning Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets the sea in spectacular fashion and we’re surrounded by incredible local wildlife. As the journey continues, we navigate through thick fog and arrive in Walvis Bay to provision and prepare for our upcoming Atlantic crossing. But before leaving Namibia, we go in search of one final desert adventure. Dr. Roger Badham spent 10 years at university to complete a PHD in meteorology. He has devoted the last 40 years to marine meteorology. Known as ‘Clouds’ in the yachting world, he is one of the most respected meteorologists in the business. Clouds has forecast nine America’s Cups, seven Olympic Games, 30 around the world yacht races and countless yacht races and regattas all around the world, with more than 35 Sydney to Hobart race forecasts and during the past 30 years he has assisted as many as 500 vessels to cross the Tasman Sea. He is also retained by Ferrari’s Formula One racing team. His insights into weather are fascinating. On Saturday the 10th of September 2016, the Azimut|Benetti Shipyard in Avigliana (Turin) hosted “Eccellenze motoristiche”, the yearly motoring event of Ferrari and heritage cars. Almost 50 cars and 200 participants arrived in Azimut|Benetti Head Quarter. The guests visited the shipyard where the famous Yachts are made and whizzed on their cars for a challenging run between the plants.

The second cockpit has a dining table for 6 and brand new sunbathing cushions. Join the Barbados 50 yachts who took part in the Cape Verde mini-cruise. Vale de Cavalheiros, Fogo was the 10th port visited by the fleet. Despite our numbers, thanks to the big effort of Jackie and Lutz from Marina Mindelo, the fleet got special permission to berth inside the tiny harbor on that WE when no inter-island ferry would be coming in. Congratulations to all the skippers and crew who tested their skills to raft up as well as dealing with an annoying swell that came inide the harbor during 2 nights … Fogo is little visited island by sailors and our reward was to take a tour to visit the Cha das Calderas, the area that suffered a big volcanic eruptions just a few years ago. We had a delightful lunch in a small restaurant/agricultural project rebuilt so quickly after the eruption. The final souvenir of this island was giving plenty of gift bags to the children living in the relocated village (this was the second half of the gifts we brought for SOS Children in Mindelo. A special thanks to Lutz Meyer-Sheel, marina owner for this mini-cruise planning and to have come to Fogo several days to insure that everything would go smoothly here!
