While doing some boat work aboard the yacht there was a *slight* mishap with one of the cameras taking swim in the Queensway Quay Marina…. The wind has been a little dissapointing today so it's a lazy, uneventful reach back up the lake. We even have to get the outboard in at one stage to help us along but once we get home, a rainy weather front comes in bringing a little bit of wind. So, we decide to do a couple of circuits, a gybe or 2, before anchoring by our mooring for lunch. The wind has been pretty rubbish the past few weeks. Not only has it been quite low, but it's predominantly been coming from the North this season for some reason, making it choppy and difficult to sail in. Hope town has it all. Grocery stores, liquor stores, church, play ground, pool, bars, restaurants, bingo thursdays, bottomless mimosa Sundays, trash disposal and a beautiful beach stretching along the east side of Elbow Cay. Unfortunately the hurricane that came through the Bahamas in 2019, did a lot of damage, and you can see the amount of work put in to rebuild what used to be. Still, some things will probably not come back, but there are marks that can’t be erased. So as we were waiting for a storm to come in, we took an hour to explore and inhale some fresh air, hoping to maybe find some people along the way. About 3 years ago, I signed up for something called the Young Cruisers Association, without really knowing what it was. Little did we know that half of the harbour in Hope Town were members, and as we randomly got invited to the bonfire on the beach a few days ago – we met them all. The founders as well as a rad tribe of young cruisers. And now – we could acquire a burgee and fly it high, knowing that this is what cruising should be all about. Epic Navigator In this video, we analyze a real incident at Alimos Marina, where a monohull stops at the narrowest point of the entrance, blocking traffic under westerly wind conditions and creating immediate risk for surrounding vessels and the harbor entrance. This is not a discussion about infrastructure, marina design, or lack of assistance. It is a discussion about seamanship. Seamanship is not defined by equipment or facilities. It is defined by judgment, situational awareness, and responsibility toward others at sea. In this analysis, we break seamanship down into three fundamental principles: 1.Does the action help the skipper without putting others at risk? 2.Does it improve or obstruct the flow and safety of the surrounding environment? 3.Would the same action be acceptable if it were done to us? Using real footage from a Greek marina, we examine how individual decisions can escalate risk for everyone, especially in confined spaces and adverse wind conditions.
