Where I Was When a Hurricane Headed Straight for My Sailboat

We leave Malta with great wind, high spirits, and hopes of catching our first fish in a long time. The Mediterranean gives us one of those rare, perfect sailing days — steady breeze, open water, and total freedom. As we approach Crete, we slow the boat, throw a line off the stern, and jump into the deep blue, swimming as the boat drifts forward. At the same time, halfway across the world, Hurricane Beryl is heading straight for Grenada — where my sailboat Chak Matay has been moored. I’ve owned her for 10 years, and she’s survived more than she ever should have.
