After ringing in the New Year in Nassau, we took the kids to Bajamar to celebrate Weston’s upcoming 7th birthday! Even though it was chilly, Wes, Ari, and I braved the lazy river—especially since one lifeguard kept playing rock-paper-scissors with Wes every time we floated by! And, of course, no stop in Nassau is complete without a visit to The Poop Deck! From there, we set sail across the Great Bahama Bank, heading for the Exumas. Our first stop: Highbourne Cay, where we did some fishing and prepped for Weston’s birthday celebration. Cupcakes, a piñata (a first for his new friends!), and a whole lot of fun made it a birthday to remember. Next, we crossed another shallow bank to Shroud Cay, the first island in the Exuma Land and Sea Park. The crystal-clear water looked more like a swimming pool than the ocean! Exploring the winding tidal rivers by dinghy, it really started to hit us—this is why we chose this life. No deadlines, no rush—just adventure. One more beach stop, and we were off to one of the most beautiful places in all of the Bahamas: Warderick Wells. Here, we followed an old sailor’s tradition, leaving an offering to Poseidon at Boo Boo Hill—using a piece of our boat that no longer fit after our fridge replacement (seemed fitting!). We also hiked to see the musical rock, the blowhole (which wasn’t blowing), and the infamous poisonous trees. But my favorite spot? The Pirate’s Lair—a secluded anchorage with fresh water, making it the perfect hideout for pirates back in the day. We explored the trails, saw trees that sprouted from seeds pirates unknowingly carried in their bedding, and imagined what life here must have been like centuries ago. While we work to bring power back to Dark Angel, the nurse sharks at Staniel Cay remind us that there’s still beauty to be found in the middle of repairs. We’re back after a short break, and a lot has changed aboard Chasing Serenity. In this episode, we explain why we need to haul out for three weeks and why we’re also heading back to Minnesota to prepare our house for sale — a big step toward fully committing to life afloat. On the boat, we’ve been busy with major upgrades. We more than doubled our solar capacity, remove an unsafe central propane system, and convert to an all-electric galley with an induction range. With the oven gone, we build new custom shelves to take advantage of the extra storage space. We also straighten a bent stanchion foot, replace our VHF antenna cable, and properly seal the VHF antenna to prevent future leaks. These projects are part of a larger push to make our catamaran safer, simpler, and better suited for long-term cruising. ⛵ This episode is about progress — stepping back briefly so we can move forward with a stronger, safer boat and a clearer path ahead. This week, Steve tackles one of the biggest frustrations—and potential dangers—of reefing sails offshore at night in rough conditions: managing dozens of loose lines on a moving deck. Inspired by rope bags used in the climbing world, he designs and sews a completely custom line-management system for Arabella’s masts, turning scrap sailcloth and mesh into organized reefing bags built specifically for life offshore. From prototypes and pattern making to stitching intricate baffles and fitting the final bags around the mast, this became one of the most ambitious sewing projects aboard the boat so far. Living remotely aboard our sailboat in Alaska means finding creative ways to build, repair, and repurpose what the coast gives back. In this episode, we explore an old wilderness ship graveyard and salvage weathered hardwood from a forgotten shipwreck to use inside the Gypsy. What looks like driftwood and debris at first glance turns out to be beautiful old-growth lumber filled with history, character, and saltwater stories. From paddle boarding heavy timber back to the boat to imagining future cabinetry and interior projects aboard our steel schooner, this became one of those unexpected Alaska days that felt equal parts work, treasure hunt, and reflection. Harry Levinson comes from a family rich in Snipe tradition. He learned to sail Snipes with his Dad, but also had help from his uncles, Frank and Buzz, as well as from a few cousins. He's still sailing Snipes after more than 25 years but now he's got to decide if he's sailing with his daughters or his wife. Harry sailed the 2009 Nationals with daughter Katie.
