Vlog#15 We sail from Morro Bay to the Catalina Islands. We stopped for an overnight at Avila Beach. After that we intended to go to Cojo Harbour which is right around the corner from Point Conception. Trav is being extremely casual in his voiceover, but this was actually insanely scary. The wind and waves picked up so fast and soon enough we were barely moving and then we started going backwards. We turned the boat around trying to decide what we were gonna do. Questioning if we should go all the way back to Morro Bay? We finally decided to just stay back around the corner before Point Conception as we were super tired. There is no anchorage here so we took turns staying awake and just sailed back and forth all night. We weren't even supposed to be in this area but we didn't really have a choice. We were getting calls on the radio in the morning to clear out of the "danger zone". LOL OHWELL. In the morning we decided to reattempt going around Point Conception. I decided to forgive Trav about the night before because we were blessed with a million dolphins. This was the craziest thing id ever seen. There was hundreds coming from every direction and they stayed with us all day. We decided to change our plan again and went to the Catalina Islands. We got in just as the sun was going down. As soon as we got up we through the dinghy in to go adventuring. This was the clearest water we had seen yet. We wanted to get in but we seen so many sharks swimming around. -------------------------------- Instagram- @Sailingdecorum --------------------------------- --------------------------------- *WHO ARE WE?* •We are a Canadian couple, Travis and Jessica. Disclaimer: We all agree that this coming cyclone season in the South Pacific with the closure of NZ and OZ is serious and that everyone has to carefully decide on the best strategy to protect himself and his vessel during the coming cyclone season. This article should not be perceived as dismissing any cyclone danger and making it sound as happy cruising without careful planning. If one moves from one anchorage to another, he might find his bolt hole full of boats by the time he comes back to it to weather a possible coming cyclone. Perhaps arranging with local people to build a permanent mooring so you have a reserved spot if going away could be a good solution. Another solution could be to stay the whole season in the one anchorage you feel safe and help any newcomer to pick a good spot, not too close to yours. Working all together for everyone's safety is the way to go ... not fighting each other! The ones with prior cyclone experience should help the ones with less experienceRight now because of Covid, lots of cruisers are in a turmoil and stress over where to safely spend the coming cyclone season in the South Pacific with all current border restrictions and especially the refusal by NZ and Australian govt to let international boats to enter and spend the cyclone season there, as they have traditionally done. The following is my own thinking and based on my own experience! I am no guru, no expert, no fortune teller and what I am sharing is just to give you a different point of view. Remember, at the end of the day, you are responsible for your choices and you will be dealing with the consequences, good or bad! I am not telling you what to do, I am just telling you what we did, for your information. The predominant popular belief is that the best way to protect one from cyclone is to go where these do not occur ... and that obviously is a very smart way to protect oneself. Today, with NZ and Australia closed borders, it is not an option. Many sailors right now in the South Pacific thus cannot follow with their original plan to head for NZ or OZ. In the past 30 years, several sailors did spend cyclone seasons in the North & South Pacific with delight! Unlike in the Caribbean, in the Pacific, to be named a cyclone only takes 35Kts! Often they are quite compact and winds are quite low just 30nm from the center. Still, with climate change and all, one season might be worse than another and a few cruisers lost their boats over the years but then again, the passage to/from NZ or OZ did also claim boats and lives! We cruise with pets onboard and the difficult & expensive regulations to enter NZ & OZ with pets made us look for an alternative way to be safe during cyclone season. From 1999 to 2012, we cruised the South and North Pacific full time, without ever going to NZ & Australia. In 12 years, we hunkered down on a few occasions and weathered only 2 cyclones. French Polynesia is a great place to spend time. First of all it offers the Marquesas, perhaps rolly for monohulls except in a few places, but no cyclone from memory :) Local people are very friendly and provisioning by air & sea with Tahiti is regular (albeit expensive) and local administration has been usually quite humane & understanding. Long term visas could be obtained from abroad with valid reasons and Europeans can stay as long as they like. Avoid the Tuamotus and really pick a good protected anchorage if staying in the crowded Societies. American Samoa offers Pago Pago as an good hurricane hole (we spent almost a year there and weathered easily cyclone Heta) and should be easy for American citizens. Tonga and Fiji have several areas quite well protected as does Vanuatu & New Cal. Insurance coverage is very hard to find, unless one is ready to have huge deductibles and/or huge premiums so this is a case of preparing yourself as best as possible. If in a crowded anchorage, help each others to be prepared, familiarize yourself with hurricane preparedness .. you will be much calmer should one come your way! We survived hurricane Luis in St Maarten in 1995, when 1000 boats were lost and only 200 survived! The worse was not the wind but the building seas and jerking, chafing on lines. Most cruisers like to find a protected area near town so it might be crowded also with local boats … but sometimes perfect places are deserted because far away from towns... Another old alternative is to go nearer the equator in these low lying islands where no cyclone ever comes but these islands are quite isolated and only appeal to more independent & adventurous cruisers. We spent great cruising going from Fiji to the Marshall then FSM, Palau before ending up in the Philippines.

Anders has been at the sea most of his life and sailed for the Swedish national dingy sailing team as a young man. After 30 knot winds prevented any racing on day one of the 44Cup World Championship in Scarlino, Italy, the race committee pulled out all the stops to ensure racing took place today, by bringing the start time forwards by two hours. Racing at the 11th 44Cup Scarlino World Championship was finally able to get underway just after 1000 this morning. Three races were successfully held in the bay off Marina di Scarlino in a northerly that built to 20 knots gusting 25. Partly due to the difficult-to-read conditions, partly due to the intense competition between the nine boats, it was a high scoring opening to the World Championship. But most incredibly after three races, and with a potential 27 points on the table today, just one point separates the top seven boats and two points the top eight in the nine boat fleet.

Day 5 saw Jonah push further up into the delta, which was to prove a mini epic in and of itself; however, the leg was a mixed bag of light air sailing followed by motoring. [31] When I arrived at my proposed stopping off spot for the night, it was bloody crowded; well there was one other boat and i didn't want to be that guy. So i set off further to pastures new, up a fork in the river and into some shallows that i barely made it through. [32] Nowhere to stop for the night presented itself so i continued to where it rejoined the main tributary. Then I took what looked like an interesting spot over to starboard between two islands, and promptly fouled the propeller in some water-bourne bindweed. [33] Proper stuck I was as i helplessly drifted into the tall reeds. Firmly up against it now, I set about those pesky weeds with my super sharp fish filleting knife. The weeds cleared away quite easily, but then when i tried to back out, it all got tangled in more weeds! After much messing about even including getting tools out to temporarily modify Jonah's motor steering lock, i eventually got out of there! [34] Still with no place to call home and getting rather exhausted now, i continued the search for a place to drop the hook. eventually, i settled for a spot near some private moorings and was alone for the night in a quite picturesque spot. [35] bucolic it may have been, but quiet it was not. Boats going by in the main channel presented a wake that rocked Jonah. I resolved to move in the morning. [36] Day 6, at first light, breakfast was had and we weighed anchor to return to the location I had previously declined. It was even busier now with several boats ensconced. [37] So I went the other side of a close by reed bed and found privacy in my own improvised location. It was a paradise found. [38] The inflatable kayak was launched and an explore of the reed beds ensued. Paddling further I returned to the main anchorage and drifted by a rather spiffing looking vessel (not as spiffing as Jonah, but spiffing nonetheless). A total classic of a sailing boat in the traditional style. [39] I got talking to the owners who invited me on board. During a self-guided tour, i was informed that Wayne (the owner) had built the boat himself from a bare hull! such craftsmanship is rare, the attention to detail, the teak everywhere, my god man, it was a labor of love. And the geezer only gets seasick! [x] A true open-ocean going ship, in the hands of a barfmeister. His wife was on board and she explained to me how it was a sistership of the boat named Serafin (of the Pardeys). [40] Returning to the good ship Jonah, i was now taking regular dips in the river as it was really getting quite hot. Muggy even. [41] By late afternoon, clouds to the east seemed to be telling of a thunderstorm. That evening I was treated to the most spectacular display, the like of which I have never seen before. [42] A psychedelic sunset to the west was coincident with a rainbow to the east. i kid you not, it was amazing. i videoed a lot, and took several photos too. [43] As darkness descended, faint rumblings of thunder grew stronger, spots of rain began to fall, the wind got up (hope that anchor holds!), and the dusk sky lit up with flashes of lightning. [44] Then all of a sudden I was beset by mosquitos; not just any plain pest either. Big, perhaps the biggest I've even seen; they were obviously attracted to my head torch and began populating the interior of the boat. [45] Mosquito netting was frantically deployed and I set about swatting the buggers which were not hard to find on account of the tremendous buzzing noise they made. [46] Finally the situation was brought under control and i avoided getting bitten much. Now confined to the cabin, daring not to venture outside on account of those monsters, I set an anchor alarm on my phone and watched to see if the boat would drag anchor during the night. [x] All was well, and apart from being woken up in the night during a fairly substantial blow, dawn broke without any further drama.

Alor will be the first stop on this beautiful journey. In this remote region of eastern Indonesia, we’ll be hosted by one of the only resorts in the area, Alami Alor. We charter the entire resort which will give us unfettered access to the resort and all that it offers, including its amazing house reef and all the snorkeling nearby. While Alor is still a bit of a secret to a lot of the world, we’ve become very fond of the snorkeling here as the shallow reefs remain in near pristine condition. Besides the vibrant coral reefs bursting with life, large cetaceans like blue whales and super pods of dolphins are not uncommon as we move between the sites. Misool is the southernmost set of islands in Raja Ampat, and is truly a paradise brimming with pristine coral reefs and more exotic marine species than you possibly count in a single trip. Misool Resort is the only resort in this entire - largely uninhabited - area and yet the comfort and style of this resort is second to none. Because of the amazing conservation efforts taken on by the resort, the surrounding waters are densely populated with sharks, rays, and swarms of fish big and small.

But traveling around Great Britain showed me a part of the world I had never seen and therefore new adventures to be had. This podcast fills you in on all the details! Join me, Ryan the Rogue Rigger on my journey of restoring a Mach 2 International Moth that I picked up earlier this year. I plan on upgrading it with all the modern systems with out breaking the bank and then I will take you along for the steep learning curve of learning to sail this Tasmanian devil of a boat. I have dreamed of owning one of these since they first came out back in 2008 when I got to take one for a spin. It was an unreal experience/feeling that I have been chasing ever since. At the time they were crazy expensive to buy and not in my budget. These days they are still crazy expensive to buy new, now there are a lot of older moths on the second hand market that are relatively affordable (Less than a Laser/ILCA in this case). For those of you who don't know, an International Moth is a single handed 11 foot long hydro foiling sailboat. These boats literally fly over the water on two hydrofoils doing speeds 2-3 times the speed of the wind. In this episode I bring the boat back to the shop and tear it apart and do some serious modifications. Lots of carbon work and splicing! This is a ll a few weeks ahead of my first ever official Moth race. So I'm under pressure to get the boat back together and back on the water as soon as possible. Enjoy!

After 5 years of development (aka contemplation and deliberation), I finally built myself a stabiliser for when we're at anchor. It's still in trials, so we'll see how it performs. If necessary, I'll upsize for increased stability. Isn't it time you took control of your freedom? There's no better way to do so than to immerse yourself in nature on a boat. Let me show you how. www.learntoliveaboard.com.au

A margin of less than two minutes secured the Class40 victory last night for Corentin Douguet and Axel Trehin’s Faites un don sur SNSM.org after 700 miles of tense, tightly fought racing. This pattern continued throughout the fleet, with several places contested by equally slim margins, while almost the entire first half the 24-strong fleet finished in just 47 minutes. Drama unfolded even as the starting cannon fired at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes when more than 20 per cent of the fleet jumped the gun, incurring two-hour time penalties that would only be applied after the finish. Class40s have a reputation for incredibly close racing, yet Guillaume Pirouelle and Cedric Chateau’s Seafrigo-Sogestran, together with Milan Kolacek’s Inland Roots Ocean Soul somehow found find a vein of wind that enabled them to leave the pack behind and exit the Solent with a useful early advantage.
